The chicken should be on the center rod of the spit and the adjustable tine would stick in the chicken to hold in place to keep it spinning and getting heat on all sides. The way it was set up, the chicken just rotated on the tine and the heavier side kept facing towards the fire. Really cool device though...

I was pleased to see that you prudently chose to leave the mainspring coiled inside its housing. Perhaps you may come across one of those devices clockmakers use to coil and uncoil mainsprings (or maybe you could one day fabricate one for yourself.)

A beautify restoration, as always. You probably shouldn't have greased the brass gears as they are self-lubricating. The grease only attracts dust which contributes to the wear.

@srh11014 жыл бұрын
A very lovely restoration and such a great thing to have on a camp fire. A couple tips for you though. 1. When you tried repairing the handle you got the brass way too hot, that's why you used so much solder and it wouldn't stick. When doing that kind of repair just heat the brass only as hot as it needs to be to melt the solder. 2. Take all the mechanism back apart and strip all that grease off. You should never use it on a clock mechanism as it attracts dirt and grime and will eventually gum up the movement. If you need to lubricate it use a graphite based lubricant designed for clocks.
@srh11014 жыл бұрын
Oh, and it will work better if you have the meat on the centre spit rather than the wing you made to hold the meat. :)

What an interesting piece to restore! I loved the fact that you left the rough surfaces alone and didn't try to smoothen them out like so many other restorers do: it's part of their history and, well, antiquity. PS. I'd put that chicken on the actual spit and use smaller forks to keep it from spinning, but that's for another discussion :)
