Big Bear Eagle Cam ~ First Feeding Attempt For BB1 ~ Shadow Watches Mom Offering Food 4.14.19

Shadow arrives with some fluff for the nest and then go to the front of the nest and wait for Mom to get up. When she does, they both look adoringly at their new baby. Mom starts to eat and break off tiny bites to feed BB1 but the baby was still too tired from all those hours spent hatching. Mom is very patient and continues to offer small bites as Shadow leans in to watch and observe.
Shadow is learning through observation and will in the near future learn how to feed his babies. His interest in his offspring is heartwarming as this new first time Dad is taking a hands on approach to all the responsibilities of raising a new family. BB1 will rest and will be up to eat in no time! I adore this family and have a tremendous feeling of happiness and hope for their success this season! Thank you for watching!

Oh my goodness, the cutest moments everyone’s been waiting for!! I checked early this morning and was relieved to see Shadow was back on the nest! The eaglet hatched under him on his watch. He removed parts of eggshell. When Mrs BB returned, he did not relinquish easily, he stood up to her, and she eased up on him. Shadow and his sticks-he must have seen the ‘memo’ from the Fraser Point nest-fortify the rails ASAP!! LOL

I watched this as it happened earlier! Mom was grabbing a few bites for herself, but kept glancing towards the little one like she was thinking about it before finally deciding to offer. So cute! I'm loving Shadow's eager curiosity, he's proving himself to be a fantastic dad, despite his young age!

My heart melted when I saw them both look at their fuzzy offspring. I watched since Shadow jumped into the nest last Summer, proving his work ethic to Jackie. Magical moment. Love his raspy vocals too when Jackie came over to see for the first time.

@@CBarooni926 The baby does not need to eat right away. When in the egg the chick consumed the egg sac yolk which was rich in nutrients and is okay for some time! The baby did eat a small amount at the 7pm feeding tonight and will eat more tomorrow!

I predicted this, mom was saving the fish for BB1. LOL. Every time the baby attempted to get a bite, his head fell to the ground. There was nothing else mom could do. He'll be alright. I saw it when it happened but with your treatment, Lady Hawk, I like it even better now. Excellent work! :)

I love how the 2 are so attentive. Shadow is learning to be a dad. He is closely watching the new baby and watching how mom interacts. It's an hour later since you posted this and I'm watching Mrs BB feed BB1 and Shadow is watching every move. It is very moving and touching the way they give their attention to it. Btw, there is that very annoying raven making itself known vocalizing in the background. Mom and dad need to do something about that raven.

I kept wondering why the baby wouldn’t raise up to eat, and then I realized that he’s so well fed that he’s top heavy. Lol. They spoiled them from day one. Wouldn’t it be cool shadow kept just a few dark feathers in between his brow. Not many, just barely visible.

Crazy question, but has there ever been an incident where a new dad ate the freshly hatched eaglet thinking it was food? I just love watching Shadow and his curiosity and care for this baby eaglet, and I just wonder if he understands that it is his baby-- that he realizes it is not food versus something else far more special to the nest. Hi Carol - some of the history on the nest ~ The female (Jackie) aka Mrs BB or Mom, hatched two eaglets last year. They were designated as BB1 and BB2. A local third grade class has traditionally given the Big Bear eagles their 'actual' names. It's a lovely tradition, and helps to heighten the children's interest in conservation and the importance of these eagles. BB1 became known as ’Stormy’, and BB2 as Big Bear Baby (AKA…Triple B). This year they will name the eaglets as well. For now they will be known at BB3 and BB4 or chick #1 and chick #2. Thank you so much and I am glad you are enjoying the coverage!!

We can submit our favorite names and then they will randomly draw 25 of the submitted Eaglet Names and the third grade classes in Big Bear Valley will vote on those 25 names to pick the two winning chick names!
