re: the Lagoon cat and project boats? Learn fiberglass and epoxy, learn it right - go get a job someplace that does it. Wear your protective gear (A friend of a friend spent a year in a boat building program not wearing protective gear. If you even whisper 'epoxy' or 'fiberglass' near him, he breaks out in a rash. Developed a sensitivity; can't be anywhere near the stuff.) Once you're good with epoxy and glass you can fix anything, quickly and efficiently. Starting from scratch you can figure it out, learn on your own, but it'll take too long and you won't be as good at it as you could be. (There's a guy who bought a storm damaged cat who, to me, seems to be overbuilding. He's going to more than exceed the load limit of those hulls with all the glass and resin he's packing in.) The best YTube videos I've seen are: for protective gear and dust collection: David Shih, for fixing the mistakes of the Beneteau Group: Expedition Evans. (They bought a 50' Beneteau that had a keel strike which yanked the frame off the hull. Almost new, but a wreck, they got it for $25k spent about a year, a very hard, dirty year - now they have, bar none, the best Beneteau 50' ever made. David Shih and Parlay Revival both fixed the Lagoon bulkhead problem. A lot of work. Sailing Nahoa just fixed the saloon floor structure of their Lagoon 410 (2005). And keep in mind the worst dust gets deep in your lungs, gives your kids asthma and shortens everybody's life. Take dust very seriously. And take it from this guy who used to be able to fix almost anything. 1. You burn out, especially as you get older. and 2. Being able to DO, and being able to organize/complete the work in a reasonable time are two very different areas of expertise. Most project boats are rotting some place never to be finished by the incredibly handy and capable guy (it's always a guy) who has the skills but not the organization. I expect that Lagoon 450s with busted bukheads can probably be picked up for super cheap - but I wouldn't want to fix those bulkheads. But imagine you already have all the skills and you're efficient and fast? You could get the in-laws to mortgage their house, buy two, fix them up, sell one, pay back the in-laws and in the other sail off into the sunset.

Dear Tim, I am a loyal fan of yours and I leave a (long, sorry) comment on your umpteenth great video. I have owned a 1980 Hallberg Rassy 312 MK1 for several years and it was the best boat I have ever owned. Most of the time I sailed alone but also along the coast with my wife, we sailed all over the Mediterranean for over 4 months every year. She was a great boat! I kept it as good as any good captain does and I resold it last year without losing a cent. I assure you that in port people looked at her with admiration and no one would have said she was 40 years old ... Now at 70 I am looking for a sailboat of the same quality (difficult but not impossible ...) but a little more comfortable especially in port, but also in bad weather. A sailing ship with a deck saloon should be the solution. Why don't you think of a video that analyzes this type of boat? We sailors who live on board for many months would appreciate ... Fair winds, thank you 💨

The work you are doing is top notch and you have won me over by giving me a perspective adjustment which will ultimately get me on the water sooner with less work to get there. Which increases the likelihood of me actually doing this. Thank you.

Tim, it's been quite a fun passage with you. Like many, I know that you are a sailor to your soul, and that other than your children- it's a major focus in your life (and has been for years). Being a solid Canadian, you've neatly stepped away from the occasional 'bitter fray' (JeannaBeneHuntalina for example) or Strict Blue Water yachts with full keels, massive skegs & horrible speed. But, I genuinely enjoy your research. I learn something every video- which I love. I feel like I have a deeper connection to my dream life with the added info! Thank you very much and, please- keep them coming (even if we have stepped over my budget already!) Hahaha

You finally got around to the Morgan. Way to go. I have always thought the Morgan 38 was the perfect "single" sailor sail boat. Roomy, safe, strong and easy to single handle. A little old, but who's not.

Another great episode! But I knew the 31 footer was going to be a Hallberg-Rassy even before you said it. That boat is for the middle aged couple that made their money in crypto and wants to sail across oceans. And that Morgan is absolutely beautiful! Also, the Little Mermaid intro was awesome too!!!

In the Netherlands it is increasingly difficult to buy or rent a house. Under €320,000. Is there nothing for sale. And Renting for a couple? From €1500.-. Per month for a 1 bedroom. The boats have also increased in value there. But still cheaper than buying or renting a house

What not to love about the Hallberg Rassy ? How about teak decks for instance ? You certainly know your boats but how about a episode or two warning about such problems ? Or maybe you could point out the potential problems and benefits for every boat you mention. Not everyone has seen all of your videos of the past and this could be a huge benefit for those who have $ in their pockets but are not as informed as they should be when spending that money. Then we have the problem with cored hulls, fiberglass grids etc. etc. etc. There are boats with cored hulls and those with a solid laminate. Of course many of the boats manufactured today have cored hulls but that does not mean they do not have HUGE potential problems. There are hulls that are only cored above the waterline while there are others that also have coring below the waterline as well. There are many people out there who are not at all aware of such potential problems. All of this is or should be a very important part of boat buying and it would be a great help if people who hold great influence over others to fully warn buyers of potential problems that can destroy their dreams while simultaneously hurting them financially. Walter Shultz of Shannon Yachts said that bolt on keels are a idea leftover from wooden boats and he is not in favor of such. As for bolt on keels it also makes a difference of what material the keel bolts are manufactured. My first boat had a cast iron keel and fiberglass grid in the bilge area. Sure wish someone would have warned me about potential problems.

Insurance, title transfer, and (?)damage history = steep learning curve, especially on foreign flagged vessels. Insurance is about to get more difficult. Talk to a trusted broker and/or Insurance broker before surveying or offering. Also don't trust owner's insurance surveys get your own survey.

First off Lagoon =.... crappy bulkheads. Not a novice repair. There is enough on the internet I would not touch a Lagoon cat well maybe if you gave it to me. Then I would want a repair fund. Anything from Beneteau single or multi hull isn't going to be on my list. Especially given how the company has treated the owners (poorly) they have put a risk..Several famous channels with quite severe problems with Lagoon. I guess it's going to take a family killed and a few large lawsuits before Beneteau gets serious. I agree with your Hallberg Rassy comments. Good boat..
@pmnfernando2 жыл бұрын
Well, can you make money on boats.... i think it is really hard. it aint the same as repairing a car thast for sure. and you really need people to appreciate, thus undertstanding, why you are asking what you will be asking for work/upgrades you throw into it. Talking about lagoons, right now, is akin to asking to people to keep radioactive material in their bedroom. Best thing for a Lagoon is to remove all the rigging and mast, sell it, make some money, up the diesels and tankage and you have a fantastic live aboard, which you can cruise at 5-7 knots motoring and depending on range you could really go places. this is all the bulkhead damage is dealt with, if any (most likely you will have, specially it having been in charter life before...)
