lol! Hey JK, the list of assumptions for that calculation would be epic and make the results almost irrelevant. I struggle to find simple things like usable indoor and outdoor sq footage and storage volume. It’s a bit of a Wild West industry with little standardization. Balance is the best and they are far ahead of the next best. Thanks for watching. D

Hi Richard! When I decided to learn how to make a KZbin video a year ago at the tender age of 59, in a last ditch attempt to convince Sylvia to go sailing, I had no idea how much I would learn, how fun the process would be, and the number of fascinating people from all over the world that I would meet! Than you so very much for watching and writing!! Than you, as well, for not mentioning just how BADLY I destroy your beautiful French language as I stumble through the culture segments! As a Canadian, I should be doing better. My poor high school French teacher, Mr. K would be, at the same time ashamed of my pronunciation, while being pleased that I finally appreciate the art, wine, food and yachts that France offers the world. If only I had known back then, I would have paid more attention to that poor man. Lol. So your note has to rate as one of my most exotic: A French wine connoisseur, writing to me from a coffee estate in Zimbabwe. Lol. I would LOVE to meet you in person one day. Like you I'm a good Commonwealth citizen because although French, my family have been established on the island of Mauritius 🇲🇺 since December 1796! Your dream/goals mirror mine so closely that I feel a natural empathy with your both..... only difference is that at 62 I'm sadly 3yrs divorced now so would be looking to sail solo unless I meet someone before then. I have often heard it said that the day you do start sailing full time you regret not having done so sooner. In my case I can only start circumnavigating from the beginning of 2026 as the younger of my 2 boys will only finish high school in December 2025. Whenever I watch your videos I ask myself just when you will draw the line in the sand and actually make a choice and commit to a particular boat. So when will that be 🤔😃...I am leaning towards the Xquisite Solar 60 Sail, having visited the shipyard near Cape Town where they are built, although I must say that their X5 is also an extremely week thought out and we'll built boat. One final note on the Château Bernadotte: before becoming a peasant farmer Ib was a stockbroker in London and Director of UBS, the large Swiss Bank. Whilst there I say on the board of an investment fund based out of Stockholm, Sweden and headed up by a friend of mine, called Carl Bernadotte! Yes, he of the Royal Family of Sweden 🇸🇪 😀

@@richardlevieux6491 Hey Richard. Your budget is a tad larger than mine (unless Vanvouver real estate doubles in the next 5 years lol). If I had such a budget, I would definitely follow your lead. I have rarely met a more genuine and innovative person as Tamas Homar. On the same trip I met him, I also had the pleasure of spending a day with the designer of the Solar Sail 60, Bill Bixon and his son Matt. It was quite a treat. Tamas builds WONDERFUL yachts, but may not have a Bill Dixon designed replacement for the X5 in time for my project. I would LOVE to hear about your purchase/build journey as it unfolds. In the meantime if you have any investment tips that could help me place a double order with you, I’m all ears. Lol!!

Dave, another wonderful review!! Maybe you have already checked this out (since you follow zatara) - but I would recommend that you consider the blue water cruising course (I think it’s called fundamentals but it used to be called “confused to captain”) There is another 3 days launch coming up that is free to join. My wife and I did the full course and were blown away at the exercises, community and the amount we learned. My wife was already on board with this sailing lifestyle idea (pun intended) but it really forced us to ask the hard questions and we walked away with so much more knowledge and better understanding of what we can get out of this lifestyle. My wife and I think it would be perfect for you and Sylvia to do together!

I’ve got a ten you plan for the same idea. Privilege is the dream, Lagoon will probably be the reality. Thankfully with so many Lagoon 55 hauls already sold there’s probably going to be a good used market in 10yrs. I believe once production started they weee able to produce about 40 a yrs. Though that might drop to 20 once they actually start producing

LOL! YES she is my friend. I married waaayyyy up! Love your plan. I started only looking a big boats, but I'm developing a taste for the 45-47 level. Consider a Balance 482 or 442. The used market should be good in 10 years and you will have a bullet proof boat for your adventure. Thanks for watching!

Beautiful boat for sure and great review as ever! I would love to buy one of these if I had the money...for me I'm looking at the Lagoon 440 which is just about within reach financially without selling property. Yes, it's old, but it is a tried and tested boat. Speaking of which, I also watched the Lady K sailing video however, there are concerns that the bulkhead problem is not just limited to the 450 and that it does extend to other models (especially ones beyond 45ft). I would advise watching the KZbin video that "The Midshipmen" (Aka Admiralty) did on the topic with the guy who exposed the whole thing. It has coloured my judgement towards lagoon and made me a little bit wary. That being said, other manufacturers still have their issues, so I guess it's all about doing your due diligence on the boat in question if buying second hand (and probably avoiding ex-charter vessels). On a separate note, isn't it about time we had a guest appearance from Sylvia?

Thanks for doing this boat....it is definitely high on the comfort list but I question the longevity of the build. Wish you would have talked about what could be expected in performance.....I expect 8-12 knots could be expected but would like to see the wind charts.....also the Knysna 550 would have been the best comparison..... in fact the salon area of the Knysna is better.....owners cabin layout not quite as good but the knysna has straight shafts.....the Knysna is built better....would you do one on the Knysna 550 and use the Lagoon 55 as a comparison and talk about the build and performance between them

Hi CB. Glad you enjoyed the episode. Re performance comp. If you go to the chart at the 20 min mark and look at the performance indicators at the bottom, I have done the KSP calculation for all four which is a theoretical calculation of the boat’s potential speed at 10 kts of wind. The Lagoon shows 66% of wind speed vs the Privilege 73%, Bali 5.4 74% and, as a reference the Outremer 55 at 90%. I would LOVE to do an episode on the Knysna 550 but I won’t do an episode on an existing boat without having actually been on board. I was so surprised at the difference between my perception of space on the Outremer 55 from video vs the reality of being on board that I want to make sure my episodes communicate reality as much as possible. So the challenge is just getting on board one. I’m planning for the Oct Annapolis show and crossing my fingers that “Private Island” might be there, so we will see. I can whip up a numbers calculation on it for you in the meantime. Thanks again for watching and commenting!!

@@navalgazingatcampdavid I was told by the broker Private Island is off the market for now....owner is sailing the Mediterranean....next year it's supposed to be sailed to the US and for sale again....I'm hoping to see that boat then.....to me that salon is the best I've ever seen....it checks every box for me....the owners cabin is a little narrower but still very nice and the boat is built better than a Lagoon 55 and has straight shafts.....less haul outs....not easy to find places that can pull a 55.....and the Knysna is priced better and you can work directly with the builder if you want to build one....plus you can make changes....not happening with Lagoon.....plus the performance is better from what I am hearing....I would say the Lagoon is the nicest and best layed out production boat I've seen....but not the best built IMO.....I'm watching Portofino very closely....can't wait to see a finished one....most interested in the one Barefoot Doctors is building...the 52....haven't seen much on the 57

I think you missed the mark on these comparables. Outremer is a performance cat and Privlege is a luxury cat. You should have compared it to Leopard and FP

I think this is a great boat layout. I would question if a 55 is too big for a Crusing couple. That being said, it really does have everything you’d want. It think it’s a shame the 51 is more like a big 46 as apposed to a small 55 with the cockpit layout and athwartship births. Lagoon do seem to have the most luxurious feeling interiors of all the production catamarans.

Totally agree John. I just don’t understand why they didn’t do a walk around on the 51 RE-design. They could have easily tucked an athwartship midship where they add the additional inboard birth in each hull.
