Laguna 1216 lathe is available here: amzn.to/31ORrwm
Deep dive examination of the new Laguna 1216 mid-sized lathe by Paul Mayer of ToolMetrix. Laguna 1216 is a new mid-sized or midi lathe offering that competes directly with the Jet line of midi lathes. It's good for both bowl and spindle turning. In this video I take a deep dive examination of the major feature set for this lathe. You'll see it in action on both spindle turning and bowl turning. All of the lathe accessories are shown here as well.
This is a great lathe for beginners and experienced turners alike. Plenty of power on this lathe for turning, and you can even turn outboard. Turning outboard gives you more capacity, and outboard turning is more ergonomic as well. Given the choice between outboard turning and normal turning, I would choose outboard turning every single time. Scooping out the middle of a bowl is so much easier when you turn outboard.
I believe that this is the best midi lathe in its class on the market today. Turn a platter. Turn a bowl. Turn a pen. Turn a candlestick holder. Turn a pepper mill. This midi lathe has the power and capacity to turn whatever you want within it's specifications.

Paul, thanks for the concise review. I found your video after watching a couple others and it was your review that answered all my concerns and questions and directed my choice to the Laguna. First rate review. After finishing with your video I made my mind up and ordered one off of woodcraft. I was a little leaary of the other tools in this market based on some of their reviews and was hesitant to make a choice. I appreciate your efforts in making the review.

ToolMetrix is there a better value in lathes today? Jet seems to offer a lot of lathe for the money.... Powermatic would be cool, Robust lathes are spectacular..... This Laguna line is where I'd first put some serious consideration however. It just seems tremendous regardless of the value as I see it..... I kind of wish maybe they had a 16x22 in there..... given where this and the next size up falls in terms of price, maybe there isn't room. Decisions decisions.
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 5 жыл бұрын
It's tricky to do a value comparison on this particular model because of the unique feature set with outboard turning and PWM. In general I believe that Laguna is carving a niche for themselves by providing high end lathes at an attractive price point. They are definitely taking market share from Powermatic, Nova and Jet in a huge way with the 1836 and 2436, and I see them dominating this market within a few years. In the midi category, it will be interesting. Jet does well here, along with some smaller players. It seems like a more fragmented market than in the higher end lathes where just a few players dominate. Laguna's strategy here seems to be different, with a product that is highly differentiated and a price point that is not chasing the rock bottom, but is competitive for what the product includes. I agree with you on the 16x22 comment, and I would be surprised if we didn't see something in this range from them in the next couple years. It's the obvious gap in their product line at the moment. And yes, I agree that Robust lathes are a site to behold. Out of my price range, but beautiful. I haven't had an opportunity to play with one, but hopefully someday. Having said all that, I can't imagine what I could do on a Robust that I couldn't do on a Laguna 2436. But the American-made appeal is there, and it is a great story of a small company with a great product and a passion for their customers.

ToolMetrix we are on the same page. Funny thing about Laguna's 18x36" for me isn't so much the price in the way- not that I have the money laying around mind you, but I believe it is a superb value.... For myself it's more about space issues and practicality though who needs to be practical right? This lathe here, after seeing your review and other videos- It's in impulse buy territory for sure..... for my spacial needs, I could fit a lathe with this length bed and my old Rockwell for spindle work which is really what it was designed for. I guess I'll put the credit card away, start to save and hope for maybe a 16x22" comes along. That would be my best case scenario.

@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Richard. I agree with you on the tool storage. That would be really nice on the 1836. As far as outboard turning, I like the way that it's done on the 1836. I find sliding the headstock down easier than moving and realigning the bed extension on the other side of the headstock each time. Hope you love the 1836! I've got a big pile of bowl blanks accumulating right now as we had a lot of tree removal done this month in the neighborhood, so I'll be spending a lot of time in front of my lathe over the holidays. Hey Paul, I'm new to woodturning. What make/model of tool rests have you found to work on this machine. I especially like the curved one you showed, but longer straight ones would be very beneficial for longer spindle pieces. Is the factory stand and stand wheels worth the $$$? Is there a longer extention beyond 10"? Thanks for any info.

Hi John, First, welcome to the world of woodturning. The post size on the 1216 s 1", so any tool rest with a 1" post should work. Be sure to get one with a shorter post or you might have to cut it shorter. The curved ones that I've used include: Robust 9" J curved rest for midi lathe amzn.to/2YMTyip Robust 14" J curved rest amzn.to/2KYJlZY Here is a 15" wide Robust, which should work fine: amzn.to/2Nc8MO6 .

Geat review. Thorough. How have you secured the chuck or faceplate when you have the spindle running in reverse to do outboard turning? I have used a Laguna 18/36 about 2 years ago and my only criticism of it was the locking system for the tool rest post. It simply didn't clamp the post tight enough which meant the tool rest kept slipping downwards. The system is good in theory but... I hope they have found a way to fix it. Perhaps they have a bigger clamping lever.
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brendan, thank you for your feedback. It sounds like something was out of tolerance with the lathe that you were using. I have seen where people complain about the short handle on the 1836 banjo, and they add a pipe over the top of it to extend it. I saw where someone threaded on an extension that they turned. I had an 1836 in my shop for a couple years and I did feel that the handle should have been longer, but I never had a problem with the tool rest coming loose. I now have a Laguna 2436 and they made the handle longer and the locking mechanism seems smoother.

Great review of this midi lathe so I bought one. I ran into problems getting it right off. The people I bought it from never informed me it was back ordered so I had to wait 30 days and I finally got the lathe, only problem is I ordered the stand and bed extension with it and it wasn't with the lathe when delivered. I called the company and they told me Laguna over sold these lathes and parts so the stand won't be here for another 30 days and the bed extension even another 30 days. Looks like I will just have to wait. The lathe is sitting on my shop floor waiting for all the other options to arrive.
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, sorry to hear that you are having this experience. I have been hearing that Laguna is back-ordered on this lathe, and it is surprising to hear that your dealer was not aware of that. Most people are saying that their dealer is aware of the delay, and orders are only taken after setting expectations of the delay. Either way, it is a bummer when you're excited about the tool and you have to wait. Maybe set it up on a workbench or temporary stand for now, and at least get some use out of the machine while you are waiting for the other components to arrive.

@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph, congrats! Hope you love it, as I'm sure that you will. Your question is a great one as there is lots to research on this. I really need to do a video on that topic. For now, here are my thoughts: - You’ll want to get some chisels to help you get started. Here’s a great set of chisels to get you started on both bowl and spindle turning: amzn.to/2SxSlJn. If you want to avoid the learning curve and equipment required for sharpening, you could go with carbide tools. Lots of people prefer these. I use both carbide and traditional, and I see merit to both. If you want to go that route, you could go with EZ Wood which is a great premium brand amzn.to/2WdnzLV, or for a more economical option these look pretty decent and seem to get good reviews amzn.to/2MiJHQ8. - If you are going to turn bowls, I recommend getting a four-jaw chuck which gives you great efficiency and control (don’t need this for spindle turning). I have several, but this is my favorite because it holds on tightly and can be used on either a 1” spindle or a 1-1/4” spindle by using an adaptor: amzn.to/2Qqk8Ks . It’s the one that I used in this video and is perfect for the 1216. - Don’t turn without wearing a full face shield. I have this one and it works great: amzn.to/2VrzXDQ. If you want the “ultimate face shield”, check out this one that is ventilated (you can find a review on my channel): amzn.to/2PZieB8 - You’ll also want a low speed grinding wheel for sharpening your chisels if you go with traditional high speed steel tools (as opposed to carbide insert tooling). Here is the one that I use and it works well. amzn.to/2u642gl - You will also want a sharpening jig because it makes all the difference for turning. Here’s the one that I use, and I consider it to be the best one out there. amzn.to/2fxJR6s

Great review and thank you for sharing, I noticed and it might only be the video but when you tightened the banjo when outboard turning it looked like the extension flexed and the tool rest was shaking when you were turning. How solid is the extinction when turning. I am impressed with what I have seen so far but that does have me a little concerned. I have been contemplating the 18-36 but really do not have the space and not sure if I would turn such large items and I think the 12-16 might be perfect for me. Thanks and I look forward to hearing back from you.
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, thanks for your feedback. I believe that what happened was that for that shot in the video I had just popped the extension over to the outboard side and didn't fully tighten it. I can see that it is on their very loosely when I tighten down the banjo. When it is tightened it doesn't flex like that at all, and it stands up very well for outboard turning. My apologies for this goof. As much as I like the 1216, it's not in the same league as the 1836. The 1612 is great for spindles and an occasional bowl, but if you really want to get into bowl turning, you won't regret stepping up to the 1836. If you don't have the space you don't have the space, but if you can find a way... :)

Hi Brandon, with double the horsepower the 1216 would be a nice step up. But it depends what you are wanting to do. To me, the 1216 is a great lathe if you turn 80% (or more) spindles and 20% bowls. If you really want to get into bowl turning I’d suggest looking at a 1.5 HP lathe. The difference is significant.

What do you suggest to use on the Laguna Midi 12/16 Lathe on the bed to prevent rust from forming on it
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 4 жыл бұрын
I use this stuff on my table saw and jointer and it works pretty well: amzn.to/2sptTCd. I think car wax would probably work as well or better, and because there isn't a direct contact between the project and the lathe bed you wouldn't have to be as concerned about interfering with the finish. People get very concerned about that on table saws. Your best bet is to cover the lathe when you're not using it, using any tarp. In particular, the HTC breathable tarps work great: amzn.to/2EC58px. But if you don't want to spend that kind of dough, you can get one of the $5 ones from the home center and it will do a much better job than no cover at all. Some people find that a non-breathable tarp will trap moisture and cause rust problems, but I haven't experienced that.

I actually looked at this lathe -vs- the Rikon 70-220 VSR Saturday. I liked how sturdy it seemed -vs- the Rikon since they were side by side on the floor at WoodCraft. It's a bit more than I was wanting to spend on my first lathe, but I keep coming back to it. Still haven't pulled the trigger yet on it.

That's a nice looking machine as well, and in general, I like Rikon lathes. The key comparison points for me between the two are the standard bed length, which favors Rikon, and the banjo, tool rest and outboard turning capability which favor Laguna. I'd like to have an opportunity to try the Rikon so that I could compare power as well as the belt changing system, because these would be important comparison points as well and I believe that Laguna has done a nice job here in general compared to other VSR lathes such as Jet. If you are looking at lathes in this class, I believe that another good comparison point would be the Jet 1221VS. I believe that machine is pretty comparable to the Rikon in terms of specs and features, except that the post size is smaller (3/4" I think). I like the larger post on the Rikon and Laguna (both 1").

Paul it's your review that kicked me over the edge to get the 1216 back in early December and I have not been disappointed. I'm a new woodturner and this machine has been getting some envious comments from other turners in the club with much bigger and more expensive machines. I have one question regarding a vacuum chuck. I see that Laguna offers a vacuum chuck system for the 1836 and larger machines, but all I really need is the vacuum rotary adapter, as I already have a vacuum pump and can make my own vacuum chucks. Would you happen to know if Laguna's rotary adapter will fit the outboard spindle on the 1216? I've written to Laguna's Customer Support but as of yet not heard back yet. To be fair it is the weekend so I may just have to be patient, but I have not been able to get an answer to this question through other online resources. Thanks for the review, and I found it to be dead-on accurate in the description.

Hi Mike, thanks for the feedback. Awesome to hear that you're having a great experience with your 1216. It's definitely a sweet lathe. I'm almost positive that the rotary adapter will not work with the 1216. The rotary adapter uses a threaded connection, and it threads inside the hand wheels on the 1836 and 2436. I don't believe that the 1216 has the necessary threads for it. On the web site they only list that it works with the 1836 and 2436. You can see the threaded connection on the picture: lagunatools.com/product/accessories/lathe-accessories/revo-lathe-accessories/rotary-adapter-for-vacuum-chuck-systems/ . If you are making your own chucks, you can find some great ideas and parts sources on how to make them with a direct vacuum connection here: www.frugalvacuumchuck.com/parts--misc.html

You’re welcome. If you’re keen on turning bowls, go 1836 if you can squeeze it in. The 1216 is good for turning small bowls compared to other midi lathes, and it’s a sweet machine, but the 1836 is a world class bowl turning lathe, with enough power and capacity to turn virtually anything that you can lift onto it. I’ve gotten so hooked on turning big bowls when trees get cut down in the neighborhood that I had to mention it. It’s my favorite type of woodworking these days, and the 1836 is much better suited for that type of bowl turning.

Hey Paul, I finally received and set up my Laguna REVO 1216 and noticed when I checked the alignment of the drive center and the live center, they miss each other tip-to-tip by about 1/16". But I couldn't find anything in the Owner's Manual that both checks for that or discusses how to align the two pieces so that a piece of pen stock, or any other piece of wood would run true when the machine is turned on. Do you have any idea if this machine has the capability to make alignments such as this? I even rotated the two centers within their individual MT2 sockets in case it was just a seating issue, but that didn't change the off-alignment. I didn't see any maintenance info or troubleshooting information either in the owner's manual. Thanks for any feedback.
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 3 жыл бұрын
The one that I had here was perfectly aligned, so I didn't explore how to fix that. That said, it seems to me that you have some ability to adjust horizontal alignment on that machine, but not vertical. I don't remember where this is done, and I check the manual and you're right, nothing there. It says to check the maintenance section for information on this alignment, but there's nothing there. :( I would check on the bottom of the tail stock to see if there is away to adjust it at all. If there is something, that seems like the likely place. If that doesn't do it, give their support guys a call and hopefully they have an answer for you. Also, the FaceBook group for Laguna lathe owners is really helpful.

Thanks Paul for the quick response. Yes, so when I first unboxed and mounted the lathe onto the Laguna legs I cleaned off all the shipping grease, etc., then I sprayed on (impregnated the cast iron and steel surfaces) with a special teflon coating called GlideCote made by Bostik - a very common woodworker's spray that protects cast iron and steel from rusting. After I sprayed virtually all the metal surfaces of the lathe and buffed it all out, I used SC Johnson's good old fashion furniture paste wax, which doesn't have those silicone excellerators in it (and which if I remember correctly seeing you use it, too in one of your videos. LOL) on not only the bed but, again on all the surfaces, let it completely dry and buffed it all out. That didn't really change it - it just made the tailstock and banjo glide very easily and now my cast iron and steel areas will be well protected until I use it again. But again, I don't think that had any negative impact on the alignment issue. I did reach out to Laguna's Tech Support, but don't expect to hear back from them until Monday, which is why I thought I would post the questions here with you, since you thankfully reply so quickly. However, in this case since you haven't had this issue, I suppose I'll try other things such as maybe applying a tiny wafer thin spacer under the tailstock hold-down clamp or something. I'm still not sure if the 1/16th inch difference is significant enough to sweat about, but being a new woodturner and I wear a face shield, I don't know that I want to see a piece of wood come flying off - no matter how small - at 3500 RPM simply because the wobble intensifies as you increase the rotational speed. Or that I'm prevented from turning my lathe up higher in speed for that reason. Surely there must be some sort of alignment adjustment feature the owner's manual left out, albeit different from the adjustment that can be seen on the larger models. I joined the Laguna Facebook group earlier last week, so I'll go ahead while I wait for Laguna Tech Support to respond next week, and see if anyone else might have some info. I appreciate you taking the time to re-read the owner's manual as well. Strange that there wouldn't be some sort of minor alignment adjustment, considering metal on metal is bound to wear over time anyway.

Hi Paul. Well not to sound stupid or whatever, but this morning, all was well again, back on the farm. I took both centers off the lathe rest and installed them into their respective MT2 taper mounting holes and ran brought them together, purposefully fully seating each of them, and wa la! They touched points perfectly. I think I must not have properly seated them and simply only just loosely inserted them? Not sure, but this time I purposefully fully seated them and they came together both horizontally and vertically - no distance off as before. So I guess one might say, it was operator error. With that said, I still can't help but wonder why there is no vertical or horizontal alignment adjustments to account for wear and tear over time. And dust or other wood debris could easily wedge themselves between the bed and tailstock when using it over time. But oh well, for now I'm back to being aligned like they should be and ready to rock-n-roll once I attach my 10-in bed extension kit to one end and the 20-in bed extension bed to the other. Sorry to have bothered you about what appears to have been my error. LOL.
@ToolMetrix
@ToolMetrix 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, That's a great outcome! Happy that it worked out. I don't think you'll have to worry about wear causing vertical alignment problems. If it does go out of vertical alignment due to wear, you've got a bigger problem that can't be fixed with a simple alignment adjustment. Enjoy the new lathe, sir!

Hi Michael, you are asking a great question. The safe RPM speed depends on the diameter of the piece that you are turning. You can find a chart that indicates the max speed per diameter in this discussion thread: www.woodworkingtalk.com/f6/speed-wood-lathe-31085/. In terms of beginner resources, I think it depends on what you want to focus on; spindle turning vs. bowl turning. There are some extremely talented turners on KZbin: Mike Waldt, Carl Jacobson, Tim Yoder, and many more. Stuart Batty has some incredible bowl turning content on Vimeo, but I don't consider it to be targeted at beginners. George Vondriska at WWGOA has some on-line classes: www.wwgoa.com/class/introduction-spindle-turning/, www.wwgoa.com/class/master-bowl-turning-with-dvd/. I got started by watching DVDs from WWGOA and it gave me a great foundation. Now I watch YT videos from the people that I mentioned, and soon I will be going to an in-person bowl turning class with Ashley Harwood where I'm expecting to learn a lot. If you have a Woodcraft or Rockler store in your area, they have a lot of in-person classes that are beginner-focused, and the prices seem reasonable. If you have a turning buddy or a club in the area that can help get your started, that is a great approach too. Thanks so much for your feedback; it means a lot. Cheers, Paul

I’ve always wanted a mini lathe, but the reason I haven’t ended up keeping one is they suck 😂. If I wanted a quality mini/midi lathe I have to spend $2500+ for a robust or a oneway. Of course I have a couple questions because the setup i’d get is about $1400 for retail price which seems very fair. I like to make heavyish cuts, and I noticed in the video your cuts weren’t super aggressive, is that just your style of turning or can this mini lathe not handle an aggressive cut? And how solid is the base? You’ve seen my winged bowls, and if I got a mini lathe I’d love to be able to turn some of my smaller winged bowls on this lathe when I travelled or my big lathe was occupied. I think I saw in your video a slight wobble when you pushed it, but I could be wrong. Hi Todd! I think that this a pretty beefy system overall for a midi lathe. It's powerful, and actually I thought I was leaning in for a pretty heavy cut in a couple shots, although admittedly I'm no Todd Halleman. The base is heavy gauge, so it definitely adds some nice heft to it. It could be a bit more rigid IMO, but it's good for a midi. It has 6 points of contact with the floor, which makes it tricky to get to sit perfectly flat on all six when it is sitting on my wavy concrete floor. I found it easiest to shim under one pad on each side with makes it solid. It think in the shot where there is some vibration it was not shimmed. I think if you got it stabilized you could turn a small winged bowl, but I haven't tried it. I tell you what; to make it less risky for you how about if I fly you out to MN over your holiday break and you can turn a winged bowl on it while you give me a lesson? Then you'll know if the lathe is right for you, and I'll get a lesson from one of the top turners on the planet.

Jet gives you a bit more standard capacity (spindle length), and Laguna is a bit cheaper, has a much nicer tool rest and allows for outboard turning (although that requires the additional bed extension, so it does make it a more expensive lathe at that point). I'd like to try the Jet1221 to see what the power difference feels like.

@@ToolMetrix That's exactly the info I was looking for. Looks like a great lathe at that price point.

How loud is the motor?

It's extremely quiet. I don't have a db reading for you, but I'll measure it the next time I'm in the shop.

I just tested it by putting a dB meter at ear level and cranked the lathe up to 3500 RPM and it read 62 dB.

Yeah, well, I bought this lathe, barely used it, and a few weeks after the warranty period was up I was trying some precision work, and could not do it. Why ? The bed is not flat. Lower in the middle than on the ends, so no amount of shimming will fix it. The bed needs to be machined flat. Laguna basically told me to go suck eggs. There is no way someone could bend or warp that bed. It was very poorly machined and quality control was lacking. Stay away from Laguna. They do not care about their customers.
