So after all the aggravation, I went back to a Laguna. This channel is quickly turning into a "all the ways you can buy a defective lathe" channel. It is just where I am right now. Thank you Woodcraft (Clearwater, FL) for your kindness.

I have that same Laguna 1836 and I love it. Woodcraft delivered it and set it up in my basement about 6 weeks ago. I couldn't use it until 3 weeks later because I had a broken arm. I am so satisfied with my new lathe and really enjoy using it!

ive looked at several grizzly tools in the last few years. ive found reason to go with another brand everytime. i think after this video, i will never even consider another grizzly tool. BTW im planning on ordering a 18/36 the next time they are on sale, or when my patience wears out, whichever comes first! thanks for your story - Fresh Air Woodshop - Kansas

My take on your trials and tribulations: Regardless of the difficulties you've had...5 lathes? you are still a wood turner. That speaks volumes of what you believe in. Your work is outstanding and your commentary is just what is needed for beginners and accomplished alike. I watch all you gals/guys mainly for what goes wrong and how to overcome it. And tool usage of course. Keep on turning.

Also just quick FYI. The cam locks on mine needed a lot of adjustment too. The trick with mine was extremely small adjustments. I checked in between each turn and each turn was only about 1/8 of a turn. Took close to an hour but it’s perfect now. Also my spindle looks exactly like yours but it actually hasn’t translated into the piece yet. I have an easywood chuck and it still looks wobbly exactly like your nova but you should be all good to go there, knock on wood!
@back-corner-turnings

I have one thought on the wobble and two on your new hollower catching so violently. On your wobble, are you centering the jaws before tightening them on the Chuck. Screw the jaw screws in so they just barely seat. Then close the jaws all the way. There is usually a little wiggle room. Once the jaws are even tighten the screws. On the hollower, as with any scraper, make sure you are above the center line. If you are then maybe a less aggressive cut. Especially on smaller vessels like the one mounted on the lathe. The tool may be dropping out of the wood on a catch just to end up digging into the wood below the center. Hopefully this was of some help. If not to you then maybe someone else. In the meantime I’ll be rooting for you to get a satisfactory outcome to this whole mess.

I've had the Laguna 18/36 for two years. I think, for the price, it is a good value. It quickly has paid itself off, however, I have had similar issues. My banjo work perfect for a year and a half, then I began to have the same issues with the locking lever. Made the same adjustments to the nut that you and your husband tried, and I had the exact same experience. I think the casting is cheep, as I can see flexing in the banjo body, and the locking collar was worn out. After a week of arguing with the CS rep that the issue was not a nut adjustment issue, I finally was able to purchase a new banjo. If I we going to keep this lathe long term, I would upgrade the banjo to a Oneway banjo.

I have that exact same SuperNova chuck and it wobbled since I put it on the old lathe, only difference is I had to put an adapter in it for both lathes, 2 adapters UGH, I also have the nova 30th addition that actually fits my Nova and it doesn't wobble at all, I purchased the supernova off of Amazon Too. I found it never is smooth once you turn it. I try to always mark #1 before I flip it to try and get close to where I was when I put it back on.

I have both of those chucks. My super Nove fits directly on the spindle. It seems it is where my wobble is severe. I got a dial indicator and not getting run out with the spindle. I am debating sending it back to exchange for another and see if it is a defect in the chuck. I can visually see the chuck wobble and it is worse when something is mounted to it. I thank you so much for all the tips, now and forever on. All of the possibilities are and always will be possibilities. It isn't so easy figuring this stiff out unless you know of them. 😁😉

Hi Kim, I have now watched both videos and I am appalled at the customer service you had from Grizzly. They should have just replaced the head stock at least if not the whole lathe at their expense and not make you replace the spindle and bearings yourself. I live in Wales in the UK and 6 months ago I bought my 3rd lathe from Axminsters, as I already had some of their other equipment and was happy with them. The lathe cost me just over £2200. It was delivered free of charge, set up and tested in my new workshop and has a 100% guarantee on all aspects of the lathe which gives me great piece of mind. The manager of the shop was actually one of the two people that delivered the lathe and set it up. I sincerely hope you have a brilliant experience with your new Laguna. I have seen a lot of turners on KZbin use Laguna lathes and they all seem to be very happy with them. Sorry for rambling on but I am so pleased you have a lathe you will be happy with and that you had at last good customer service from A HUMAN!! LOL Cheers and looking forward to your first video using your new lathe. Take care. Huw

Kim, one thing you may never thought of is that if you have dropped the chuck on the floor especially a concrete floor one of the jaws could be ever so slightly bent which will cause a pretty big wobble. I know this by experience, lol. It will definitely effect what you are turning.

Kim, I have never had a Nova Chuck but you mentioned having to tighten a set screw. If there is only one set screw it might be pulling the chuck off slightly. Try loosening the set screw (just for a test) to see if it doesn't help. Be sure to retighten afterwards.

Hey Kim, I have had problems with Grizzly similar to yours but with a band saw. Had to fix it myself. I also had a problem with a Laguna 12/16. The tool rest wouldn't go all the way down and they would not fix it but they wanted me to fix it. I bought it at Woodcraft so I called them and they called Laguna. To make a long story short I took the lathe back to Woodcraft and bought a Jet 12/21 and I am happy. The owner of Woodcraft told me they have had a lot of problems with customer service at Laguna. I can tell you the customer service at Woodcraft is first class and I told them so.

Sometimes the jaw can be off if you tighten down the jaw teeth so they are closed you can see if they need to be adjusted. It needs to be tight all the way around if there is a space, see if you can adjust it. Then again it can be the wood if you try to rotate it in the jaw, and see if spins correctly or it just might be off anyway then it could be the wood it self. I had this happen and rotating it happened to work. My friend has a few Nova chucks and he has one that just not work correctly. He claims it is out of adjustment. Good luck you will get through this.

Hello Kim, I have the same Nova chuck, I have had issues with it, it ran out almost 0.30 thousands, by a dial indicator. I realized that if you do not remove the piece, you do not have any problems. If you have to remove the piece, put a register mark between two of the jaws, and use a sharpie to mark the wood between the two jaws that align with the register mark, so you can align the piece back to the original orientation. Not perfect but usable. I purchased a One way Stronghold chuck, and did not have this problem. My old 1950's lathe was not the problem. I feel that the Nova adapter is the problem. The Nova has a screw in adapter, while the Strong hold chuck has a slip fit adapter that has screws to hold it in place. I personally think that the two sets of screw threads as the Nova uses, have a bit of slop, that is the problem. I feel One way threads the adapter then turns it round to fit their chuck. I love the One way chuck, but still use the Nova for small turnings that I do not feel I will have to remove the piece before it is completed. I still mark the register marks in case I have to remove the piece. Hope this helps! WH

one suggestion, the chuck may be seated on the "flange " of the spindle thread, but did you check it for wood dust/ off-cuts? as with METAL lathes, and milling machine chucks, if the surface is CONTAMINATED by debris the surfaces can't attain a full metal to metal contact, and hence attain the accurate concentric alignment that the machine was designed for. that is to say the debris moves the parts out of alignment with each other, same as with parts in a vice on the drill press or between the fences in band saws and table saws.

@Sea-Dog5496

Hi Kim. The lock handle on your banjo rotating all the way around and not locking it tight, may be due to (my guess) the rod diameter flex. You know the lock rod is offset so when you rotate the handle it draws up the bolt bringing up the washers under it and locking it like a clamp to the ways. I don't know what size diameter rod Laguna use on their lathe banjo, but I am thinking it is not large enough to counter the pressure you can apply when you twist the lever to lock the slide. You could tighten the adjuster nuts as you said you did, but never get them adjusted enough to over come the rod flex. It may not be much flex but just enough to allow you to rotate the locking handle 360 degrees. May not be the case for yours, but it sure sounds li that to me. Slide the banjo all the way to the rear, keeping it 90 degrees square to the bed ways, then lock it down and see if you can still rotate the handle all the way around. The rod should not flex in that position. I suspect it is at its worst when the banjo is at the center of the ways, hence more flex can occur. Hope that makes sense. I see no cure except for a bigger and stronger banjo. :/

Such an ordeal, Kim. I tried two different SuperNovas and two different adapters when I bought my Powermatic new about 15 years ago. I had visible runout regardless. I sent them back and bought a different brand... no runout with any chuck I've put on it since. I have a Rikon (Record Power) SC4 coming in a few days and hoping it runs true. I've heard good things about them so I'm not too worried. Wax the bed ways (I use Johnson's paste wax). That should help with the banjo and tailstock movement. Billy

Hello Kim, I've been a woodworker and woodturner for many years. I've owned both a PM 3520A and B. Even these excellent lathes can have a small amount of runout (the rotational deviation from zero deflection as it spins). This could be a result of an out of round or bent shaft, an out of balance turning and poorly made or mounted bearings or even a poorly made chuck. You can easily put numbers on this and isolate the true cause. Some of the most important tools in my shop are set up and measuring tools. One of the most important of these tools is a (0.0005") dial indicator (dial indicator and magnetic base can be purchased for ~ $20 to $60 on Amazon) With this tool you can easily check the "TIR" (total indicated run out) down to +/- 0.0005" (only 5 ten thousandths of an inch) No guess work...Just take a video or take a picture snd send it to the offending vendor... Bob's yer dads brother. I would start with a bare spindle and indicate it on the outside just shy of the threads. Mount the indicator with the sensing probe lightly touching the spindle at the "low point" with a clear path around the spindle. Rotate the spindle slowly (by hand only) You should see the indicator twitch up and down. Set the dial to zero on the low side. The reading will be the total run out The runout should be less than 0.001". Then stress the spindle (right and left, up and down). There should be almost no additional run out. Then add the chuck and do the same. You can also do this measurement with the tool rest or any rigid object and a feeler gauge (just a few bucks). Rotate the spindle to find the "high spot". Bring in your tool rest or other rigid object in to lightly touch the spindle at the "high spot". Rotate the spindle till you see the widest gap. Measure this gap with the feeler gauge. This is your total run out. Always check the clearance between base of the chuck and the shoulder of the spindle, there should be absolutely none. The chuck should thread smoothly down to seat on the spindle shoulder with a click or snap to lock down with absolutely no gap or play...this is what keeps the chuck from wobbling on the spindle. Some folks (like me) use a 1 1/4 inside X 0.062" thick Nylon washer between the chuck and spindle to eliminate this problem and also allow the chuck to be removed easier. These are available on Amazon and probably at Woodcraft. Always use the chuck grub (set) screws to lock the chuck in place. The rotational (inertial) loads when the lathe is shut down can produce significant torque that will try to unscrew the chuck...This can cause serious injury or worse if you are standing in the "firing line" (don't) and are hit by a heavy spinning blank with chuck attached. I hope this information is helpful. If you need more help feel free to drop me an E/M (kunk2357@gmail.com) I hope you and yours are doing well. Y'all be careful and stay safe...kunk

I am so sorry you have had to deal with that frustration concerning your lathe. I hate that I have no solution fro you. I will say though that I would take some video of that wobble in the new one and see what the gentlemen at Woodcraft have to say. I know I certainly saw the wobble in the chuck. Maybe they can shed some light on the problem for you. It very well may be the new chuck. That's much easier to exchange than a lathe. It wouldn't hurt to start there. Hi Kim I had the same problem with my SuperNova2 also. I found out two things to correct the problem: The nova jaws need a straight tenon, after you know that ... the manual also says that but I would never have understood that from the manual! When mounting in a recess it needs a dovetail. I understood the dovetail and I thought it applied to both! But it doesn't. The other thing is you tenon should not touch the inside of the chuck it should have a space. All the holding power comes from the chuck jaws on the tenon and on the bottom of what you are mounting. You should go on KZbin and what one of the Videos on mounting. Mainly because I can't seem to express clearly how it is done. After a little learning my Supernova2 worked fine and I bought another one which is operating very true.
@anchorburg8196
@anchorburg8196 5 жыл бұрын
Some things to try as to runout with the chuck. No trash between the chuck and headstock. It is that mating surface which makes it run true, even a small chip of sawdust will throw it off. None of the "plastic" washers to help make chuck removal easier, they can become deformed. Jaws, in the correct position on the chuck #1 on #1, etc. Jaws installed properly. Loosen the jaws about 1/2 turn and scroll in tightly. If you tighten them when extended you may not get them "centered". By having the jaws loose they can smooze to a perfect circle when closed. Then tighten the screws. You have very little gap between the jaws. They are turned as a billet the cut into quarters. Per Nova there is 2-3mm of material removed when they are cut apart so with a perfect circle there will be a gap of close to 1/8". It may be the video but it appears the jaws are almost touching; only possible this is causing so flex in the wood if the jaws are not applying enough pressure. I normally cut my tenons in wet to about 2-1/8" or in hard dry to about 1 7/8 - 2". Except for very hard the wood will crush some. As to the banjo I do not know. My Nova has a nut at the back end and if it is not adjusted right the handle will do as yours does (or maybe not even be able to turn the handle at all). Total adjustment is only about 1/4-1/2 turn of the nut to go from one to the other. I don't know if your banjo has a similar adjustment or not

Yes. Sure have. I have probably tried everything at least twice. Thank you so much. You never know, could be something simple . I did get a new headstock but some of the wobble isn't gone. I am discovering that it is definitely the Nova chucks. I have had so many emails and phone calls about Nova chucks causing the same wobble on many other brands of lathes. At least it's not as bad with the new headstock.

Sorry for being late with this txt, just did watch what you had to say. By no means on hackeling you on the process of installing the bearings, most people dont know this. A person should never pound the bearings on the shaft. What needs to be done, is either heat the bearings with a bearing heater, or freeze the shaft. Keep up the good work on your turning projects.

I just when and look at my friends Nova jaw. He has the almost the same problem as you. The Extension he has are longer to keep it away from the Jaw. We took those off and tried another set but was close to the Jaw. This worked great and he and I think the jaws was tweaked some how. These are older jaws and at sometime this happened. Being new it might not have been milled correctly. Did you install the jaw pieces correctly they have numbers on the backs and on the jaw the numbers are on the side. They are milled at the factory and they put a number sequence on them. I thought he said you could adjust them but you can not.

So... I'm looking to get my first lathe and watching this video raises more questions for me. I'm on a budget and really only want to turn bowls, vases, urns, boxes, etc. so I'd like at least 12" over the bed ways. I've been looking at Grizzly and seen good reviews on their products and I would like to buy through Amazon if possible but if their customer service is crummy, then... There's a Harbor Freight store in town but I'd rather save a little longer and "buy up" the first time. The Laguna seems to be out of my budget but maybe worth waiting for. Any others you looked at when searching to replace the Harbor Freight? Recommendations please. On the chuck wobble, and I'm spit balling here, I have seen a couple other turners put a nylon or hard plastic disk between the chuck and the shoulder on the spindle shaft. I think it was Mike Peace or Rick of Rick Turns and IIRC, it was so the chuck wouldn't get stuck on the spindle. This small spacer also might make up for any small machining discrepancies in the shoulder of the spindle and the chuck body where they make contact. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Sorry they have been so frustrating. Stuart

I am thinking of getting that spacer you mentioned. It is a pain to get this Nova off of the spindle. I have heard lots of good about Grizzly and Laguna. I may just have a knack for getting the defective stuff . lol Laguna customer service is decent. I did not call them just emailed them, because when I call I always have to leave a message. I emailed Laguna on Memorial day and sent 4 emails after that. a week later I finnaly got a responce. 🙍‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Laguna is sending a new spindle that I have to install.... This is going to be fun and probably not end well. Thats my options at this point . Grizzly was nuts. If you order a lathe on Amazon, you will have to return the WHOLE lathe to amazon and buy another. Grizzly will not "service" the lathe due to the agreement they have with Amazon. Its nuts.. I will say that returning stuff to amazon is SO much easier that returning to the manufacture. Jet is made by Laguna. Both lathes have good reviews. My experience may not be yours. If you can go look at lathes in person, so much better.

MrTaco250 If that is all you plan on turning I would take a hard look at the Nova 1624 II. I to am in similar shoes. I just want to turn bowls, vases, and candle holders. I'm on a tight budget (been saving for over a year now) to get one. They make 2 versions a manual belt change one and a variable speed. The head stock swivels, it has 16" of swing over the bed and 24" out board and 24" between centers so it is a nice size lathe just for bowl turners. Read all the reviews you can find and I think you may be impressed

Unfortunate that your Grizzly was knackered too. It's a bit of rolling the dice with them -- I rolled well and my G0766 was great out of the crate and has remained so. Some tips though: Many people don't pay enough attention to making the ways coplanar. It's good, but not terribly important that the bed be level in any direction, but it's really, really, really important that the leveling process gets the ways coplanar. Look at Robust and Oneway lathes to see how much engineering they put into this. Use a *good* level or digital gauge... Second, for diagnostics beg/buy/borrow/steal a decent dial indicator on a magnetic mount. If your spindle checks out internally *and* externally, check the body of your chuck. If that's OK, there's something wonky either with the internal screw mechanism or the jaws. With a good flat surface -- e.g. a plate of thick glass -- you can use that dial indicator you stole :-) to measure the jaws for consistency. FWIW, I've found Nova chucks to be OK but their modern made in China jaws suspect. (I now use Record Power chucks & jaws.) Hope this helps -- and good luck. Clyde

Pounding on bearings is not good for their longevity. If you heated the bearings just enough to warm them and put the shaft in the freezer then it would've loosened the fit a few thousandths and made it much easier.

Kim, do you regret your decision on purchasing a Laguna? Just seeing your trails and tribulations convinced me that to pass on a lathe that seems to have major quality control, and poor customer service. Not with just you, but many. I have received my 2035c Powermatic a few weeks ago, and all I have to say is wow. I know it’s almost twice the price, but sometimes you are better to spend the money, and be totally satisfied and know you have a 5 year warranty to boot. one more pointer, that banjo handle IS meant to turn 360 deg. around, that is so you can cam the banjo with the handle 180 deg. around the other side of the operating rod ( this gets the handle out of the way while you are turning), as these are a cam-action design, they work on a cam that raises the locking washer into place, but this can work in two positions, for as I said previously if the handle is pointing at 11:00 it can obstruct access to the work by the tool handles, so this alternate position is available for these occasions.

I have heard lots of good things about the Powermatic 3520C and the Oneway 1640 full-size lathes, but you have to be prepared to spend $4k-plus. As much as you love to wood lathe, you might have to finally tell yourself.......if I buy, say either of these two lathes, it's only gonna hurt......once. They are one of the best lathes for the $$$. - Industrial grade - and the very serious hobbyist. If you were just beginning I wouldn't recommend it because of the cost, but it sounds like (just started subscribing to your channel), you have been at this for quite some time now, and it's time to move up. Good luck and happy turning.

You need to join a wood turning club. If you live between Clearwater and Orlando, there is one TriCounty Wood Turners that meets in Lutz or Polk county Wood Turners that meets in Bartow. You can go to the American Association of Wood Turners web site and they list all of the clubs in the area. I am mostly self taught from KZbin also but have learned a lot from my club demonstrations. I have also found there are some excellent instructors in the Tampa Bay area. I use only nova chucks on my nova lathe. I have not had any trouble although I have seen things on KZbin suggesting some may wobble. One thing about mount shown is that you have the tenon to small. There should be at least an eight of an inch gap between the jaws when closed around the tenon. As you have it, it the jaws look completely closed and may not be holding the tenon tightly. Another thing is make sure the number on the jaws match the numbers on the chuck. They go on in a particular order. Good Luck with it all.
@clydeulmer4484

Yes, absolutely. In my turning club there's an aggregate several hundreds of years experience turning, a couple of mechanical engineers, a pair of professional machinists, a metal fabricator or three, a couple of farmers who have spent their lives fixing farm machinery... Solid sources of advice, in other words, wrt any problem you might have.

I bought a new lathe from Grizzly shaft was bent from the start. I called the lady to me to beat the shaft out till she realized the bearings we’re molded into the head stock. After 10 minutes I said to her I remove bearings as part of my job so I said she may want to talk with someone before I break the cast. So guess what I was right and they did send me a new headstock no problem I did have to wait till there headstock came then I put the bad in there container and sent it back no problem whatsoever. But that was my experience. Headstock also needs to be lined up with the tail stock that should be in your directions. And the last thing is customer service has gone out the window as you are figuring out. I have been turning about 6 years and I do agree with another comment and that is join a group if you can. Good luck and be safe.

Kim, I hear you loud and clear on faulty equipment. I run into it all the time, while I'm not a wood turner (yet?) I still deal with expensive equipment. The customer service you received from Grizzly is NOT customer service! However it's typical of a lot of businesses these days sad to say. Any company that won't stand behind what they sell is a company I will only use once. I've always thought that Grizzly stuff was overrated and overpriced . You tackled a difficult job replacing the spindle and bearings. Making bearings behave themselves on a critical interference fit is difficult on folks that have been working on machinery with tolerance in the thousandths even for a long time. You managed to do it by yourself which just impresses the dickens out of me. Paying good money for a machine and expecting it to give you 100% is not asking too much in my opinion. Evidently it is too much for Grizzly and Amazon, who should be ashamed of themselves for putting you through this kind of horsecrap to begin with. I wish you the very best luck with your new lathe. Just think of all the experience you have gained from these experiences! Albeit frustrating and maddening.
