Despite her crush, she knows that Lakan would never love her, but there was one person he would love no matter what that he needed to see. It's hinted from 9:08 that Maomao knew Meimei had feelings for Lakan, hence why she wished it was Meimei he bought instead. She cares deeply for her sisters.

yeah in the novels they more blatantly state it before, and add the after part, so that maomao wanting her sister to be bought out is well established. But obviously the anime leaned into it more like it was her parents seeing each other plan. The original is still there, so it's not bad, just better to lean into the emotional payoff.

oh no I can't believe it's the end already that scene with Maomao dancing is absolutely gorgeous she was so beautiful and graceful I almost tear up and Lakan reuniting with Maomao's mother was so touching

I believe Toho made the announcement for Season 2 yesterday. So they were quiet about it right up to the last episode. They announced Season 2 will be in 2025, but I haven't heard an exact date yet.

I believe Maomao knew Meimei was in love with Lakan, so hoped to move that along, but Meimei realized he did not have the same feeling (he did not see her face) and wanted her big sister, Fengxian to have one more chance. Maomao knew this and cherished Meimei for her kindness.

You have to think about how the brothel would act in this situation as well to get why maomao wouldn't even have considered the mother would get bought. To say nothing of the fact they told Lakan she was dead. They would lose their reputation if it got out they sold a courtesan who had syphilis, and would reasonably think she'd hate his guts. In other words, maomao is too logical to think Lakan would not only end up finding out she was still alive due to how the owner protects her, and that he'd buy damaged goods from her prospective. To say nothing of dropping a fortune big enough that the owner caves on the mother.
