Love this. Takes me back to when me and my group were doing this drive-drove up there to go skiing but had a look around the town and lake first. Loved it. ❤

When we move there in 1959 the very last day of 1959 Harvey's club was called Harvey's Wheel and it was a single story casino that still had hitching rails up front along the ramp leading up to the front door

Lovely place indeed, I feel relaxed and slightly rejuvenated just from watching this! And in many aspects, it reminds me of Switzerland and the region near Lake Geneva and Rhone Valley where I lived several years: a lake, mountains still snowcapped in May, lovely colorful trees, relaxed neighborhoods etc

I used to live in Gardnerville and commuted up Kingsbury Grade daily to my accounting job at Harrah's. Quite often I'd take this drive on the weekend. One weekend, on my birthday, my parents drove up from Napa so we could hike and picnic at Emerald Bay, my favorite spot in Tahoe many often miss. Tahoe is such a great place to breathe clean air, invite family to visit and especially enjoy driving. I no longer live there, but it preceded the best time in my life and set the stage for the career I later had as an accounting systems instructor for Harrah's parent company back then, Bass, which owned Holiday Inn.

All the car sparked alongside of the road on the grade up toward Spooner summit is a place I used to go all the time called hidden Beach and it was named at appropriately. It was also the site of Captain Whittel's cabin while he was building the estate just north of there. It was a magnificent estate with boat Harbor and a boat garage that went into the side of the mountain where he kept the Thunderbird yacht. Later it was purchased by the Dreyfus fund owners and the wife wanted a ballroom added. They built a huge wooden ballroom that, in my opinion, did not fit in with the rest of the estate which was all built of native granite blocks. They later donated it to the state of Nevada

Very nice video. Makes me a little homesick. Spent nearly 30 years between Truckee and Tahoe. You did have somewhat of a jump cut between Tahoe City and Kings Beach, but that's ok. Wish this was smellevision. I miss the smell of the pines. Thank you.

Decades ago I figured out a way to get past the gate to Cascade Lake which is private. At that time there were only two cabins there. But I took my Volkswagen beetle through the little shortcut I found in the woods and since this was winter time the lake was entirely frozen over, which is not unusual for that lake. I took my best friend Guy with me and we started doing donuts out in the middle of the lake on the ice. Well, it wasn't as thick as I thought it was and we broke through the ice. Since Volkswagen's normally float for quite a while, we got a little bit wet but hiked out and started walking towards South shore where I knew there was one motel just before you get to the "Y"where I could borrow a car because I knew the owner of the motel. It was a Plymouth four-door coupe, but it had no doors, because he was restoring it and the doors were in his shed. So I "borrowed" the car without bothering to ask and drove back out to Cascade Lake. This big car would not fit through the little shortcut in the woods, so we parked out at the chain which served as the gate. We walked the short distance into the lake itself, only to discover that my VW had sunk. Then I remembered, after the fact, that the heater tubes weren't connected anymore because they had rotted out and I hadn't gotten around to putting new ones on! So, somewhere in the bottom of that lake sits my Volkswagen, and I'm sure nobody ever recovered it because obviously, nobody knew it even was there because nobody stayed there in the winter time including the owner of that private property!

Going south just before you get to the state line there's a huge meadow on the right that was called rabes meadow and it was owned by the crazy lady named rabe but I got to watch the filming of the original intro to Bonanza at the top of that meadow where it meets the highway they closed off the entire stretch of highway 50 or about a half an hour while they covered the highway with pine needles and then the cartwrights rode up on their horses while it was being filmed then the cameras cut and they quickly swept off the highway and reopened it!

I recognized all the places in Kings Beach, which is basically where the video starts. I recognize almost all of those places, but I'm curious as to why the drive didn't take into account Lakeshore drive itself, which is by far the most expensive real estate at Lake Tahoe and some of the most expensive in the entire nation! At this point it's just going past Sand Harbor State Beach on the Nevada side and going south on highway 28. I can't wait to see what's South shore looks like nowadays, because it's been oh at least 20 years since I drove up that way, but I know it's radically different from other clips that I've seen and the last time I was on South shore it's nothing close to what it was when I first moved up there on the last day of 1959 with my mother, my two younger brothers, and the man that was soon to be my stepfather.

Thanks for commenting! It would be strange to expect anything else from the "Scenic drive ..." video 🙂. Would very much appreciate if you could share your expectations/thoughts/recommendations! What did you expect from the video in the first place? What could be improved? Appreciate your feedback!

Thanks for your answer and request. Your nice movie would be much more informativ and underlining the announcment if some different stops at the lakeside would give an impression not only of the environment directly at the highway but also of the incredible views to the lake itself.

At Glenwood, just north of cave rock, they were filming a movie there and I was hired as a stand-in for Larry Hagman,, while my friend who turned me on to this gig was the stand in for Barbara Eden who played I dream of Jeannie. Larry Hagman was very gracious to all the people around him, but Barbara Eden was a total Bi++h! And I have no idea why, but she was snotty to everybody. The name of the movie was tentatively called The Howling, however they discovered that there was already a movie of that name so it was to be called a howling in the woods.
