One more thing. Bird and Magic needed each other. It was like ying and yang. After Bird met Irvin they became great friends. When Magic had to quit the NBA because of the HIV Bird cried and lost the drive he always had. The greatest thing about this rivalry was that at the very end of their careers they got to play together on the Dream Team. Watch that documentary to see the love they had for each other.

Damn, I miss the 80s and 90s... Im not even a basketball fan, Im a hockey guy, but I was still glued to the TV watching the NBA when Magic and Bird was playing. Being good at a game is one thing, being entertaining while doing it is a whole different story. Almost all sports these days have become weak, people filming and falling over to get cheap penalty shots or free throws and shit, there is such a drama queen vibe in most sports these days. Back in the 80s players were men and tough fakking men at that. Larry literally broke his face after smashing it on the floor. He downed two beers, went back out and shot like 16 points with a concussion and double vision to win the game. Today you see "athletes" rolling on the floor holding their face when someone graces their elbow, its pathetic. The NBA will never be as good as when Magic and Bird played, I will bet good money on that. Absolute legends.

I grew up a huge Celtics and Bird fan so I appreciate you giving love to your team and Magic, but still giving credit to Bird🤙! I was lucky to have a grade school coach ( Tom Boston, ironically, ) in 1983-84 that taught me the HISTORY OF THE GAME. So I was FORTUNATE to know about Mikan, Cousy, Russell, Baylor, KC and Sam Jones, West, Chamberlin, Jabbar, Archibald, etc.. when Bird and Magic saved the league! Magic is the only guy that won 3 titles in 4 years at 3 different levels (high school, college, and pro)! I am like you and always going to give credit to my team first. It goes into the histories of both players, what made them so groundbreaking, and why they wouldn’t have been as great without the other. Also goes over the history of the NBA in the 80s; super interesting for any Laker fan!

I like, and respect that you actually listened to the argument! The decade of the 80's NBA basketball, with Boston on one coast, and the Lakers on the other, was absolutely epic! Season after season, game in, and game out, neither team could afford to lose afraid that the other would get home court advantage if they met in the finals! The competitiveness was incredible! And will never be matched! I can think of individual events, or performances (Secretariat winning the triple crown, the 1980 USA Olympic hockey team, Tiger Woods), but that stretch of basketball surpasses any sporting era I have been blessed to witness! And yes, I have nothing but respect, and admiration for your Lakers!!!

My man, I've watched so many reaction video's. But you are by far the best at it! There are many reasons I say this. First off, you're knowledge of the game. The fact that your a die hard Laker fan, but you don't always take their side just because they're your team. You're very honest. I'm from Boston. Born and raised here. So you know that I'm a die hard Celtics fan through and through. I think your just like me. Neither of us actually "hate" the other's team. I believe we both know just how great each team was back then, so in fact I think we really "respect" the talent of each team. Let's face it, have you ever seen a better rivalry than the Celtics-Lakers of the 1980's? I loved those years, and I respected the hell out of your boys. I know that there were many times I wished we had some of your guys on the Celtics. Magic for sure! But also Kareem and the rest. Two of my favorite players even to this day are James Worthy & Michael Cooper. I'm sure you know that Bird said Cooper was the best defensive player ever. And I agree with him. But weren't there also times back then when you were wishing Bird was a Laker? And I think that "DJ" was right behind "Coop" in the defense department. And Pat Riley is the greatest coach ever in my mind. All I know is those were by far some of the greatest basketball games of all time. So thanks for the video my man, I really enjoyed it. You didn't yap like so many others do. Some guys just keep yapping all through the video and you can't hear a damn thing! You don't do that. You will pause the video if you need to say something. I like that. Have you ever tried watching some of these video's and the dude just won't shut the f**k up? One brother was showing a Larry Bird video, and started talking from beginning to end. I swear, I tried to grab him by the neck right through the damn screen! By the time the damn thing ended, he never even mentioned Larry Bird's name, or even said the word "basketball!" On the winning percentage thing, to put that into an even deeper perspective, just think about how larry was less than 10 games from topping magic. When magic played a less competitive conference for most of the 80s and his career was longer. To me that says everything. No disrespect to magic at all though, he's also one of the goats without question. I just find that fascinating. Great reaction as always bro.

Clayton mentions that Bird's finishes in the MVP voting in 84, 85, and 86 were 1, 1, 1. But what he doesn't mention is that if you stretch that out to 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, then you get 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 3, 2. For EIGHT straight years, Bird was one of the top three players in the NBA, and in all of those but one, he was one of the top two. The only non-Center ever to win three straight MVPs. Just unreal. I watched Magic and Larry's whole careers as they happened. (I was 12 when they were rookies.) I was also a Lakers fan, and Magic and Kareem were my favorite players. Kareem won his last MVP in Bird and Magic's rookie year, and Magic's best years were right after Bird's best (the late-1980s). I hated the Celtics, and I especially hated Bird. But the truth is, down deep where I would never admit it, there was really no question in the mid-1980s who the best player was. It was Bird. And everybody knew it. As a Lakers fan, I always thought we had the best team. But when we played the Celtics, we just had to hope that Bird didn't beat us anyway...

I got to call Larry my friend and he called me his little brother. Indiana State University was the place, and Terre Haute Indiana where I grew up was the MAGIC. Bird and Magic saved the nba. I'm a celtics fan and while i boo the laker jersey i respect the winning tradition and history of the lakers. Magic and Bird will forever be the best rivalry in basket ball and lakers celtics provided some of the best nba finals even though magic's lakers have the 2-1 edge they were hard fought nba finals that came down to the wire. we will never see anythign like that in basketball again .

Imagine if all those dudes in that time had the supplements, medical care, nutrition and shoes players today have. They were playing in flat bottom Chuck's. They're trainers probably had a second job. That was the era that the T.V. dinner was considered a good meal. Supplements back then was like a pack of lucky strikes, Pabst blue ribbon, and raw eggs. And they all played through injuries. Magic and Bird though, that's a story that never gets old. College and NBA finals and and in a rivalry like that, they were still best friends. Let's go back to those days.

The KEY difference between Magic and Bird: Magic was a GRACEFUL player on a "fast-pace" team. Bird was a CONSISTENT player on a "bang it out" team. That is really it. It was grace and speed for Magic, while it was steady and rugged for Bird.

I feel you have to include Bird as a top 5 player because he excelled at so many areas of the game, and he could blend his skills to fit around the other 4 players no matter who they were = look at what Bird did at Indiana State! Another unmeasurable attribute is the desire to win and his hustle on both ends of the floor. Larry's High School coach once said, "you can't measure a players heart" and that fits Bird so well. Think about Bird wanting and demanding the ball at the end of the game because he wanted to hit the last shot and Bird was like that his entire career. I feel it is impossible to pick one "goat" because of all the variables involved, but Bird has to be considered one of the greatest to play. Look at the list of "goat" candidates and no other player ever shot 50-40-90 as Bird created that club and did it 2 seasons back to back AND if you look at 85,86,87 and 88 = 4 seasons Bird averaged 50-40-90 over those 4 years ( FG = 51.79% 3ptr = 41.45% and FT = 90.07%) while putting up 28.1 points per game and 9.7 reb/game and 6.8 assists/game. I do believe Bird is the best all around player we have ever seen. His win % for the first 9 years ( before the heel surgeries and back issues) in games he played in was 534 wins and 177 lost for a win% of 75.1% and was in the stronger East conference. Bird was the primary reason Boston went from a 29 win team to a 61 win team as a rookie. In MVP voting in his first 9 years was 4th, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd and 2nd. He really did inspire and lift up the level of play with those he did play with and that is a true mark of an all time great. FYI I do respect your being a Laker fan and understand. I too have Bird over Magic because Bird was also a better defender = 3 times on an all defensive team ( 2nd team) and Bird led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top 5 for DWS. Jordan couldn't be the winningest player, he had to play against bonafide super teams in Bird Celtics and Magic Lakers... Still love the three point contest story... Everyone else is in the locker room getting ready for the contest, Larry Bird waltzes in late and says "which one you is going to be second today???" and then proceeds to win the contest without ever taking off his warm up jacket... In his mind, there was no question about and I bet the locker room agreed with him.

I watched so many videos about Bird. I had to look it up myself. In Bird's first nine seasons he was top three in the MVP votes except for his first year. His first year he was 4th. Then Bird pulled off three 2nd place votes in a row, three 1st place votes in a row, a third, and a second. I know everyone has their opinions about who they want in their top ten. I would put Bird in the top five of all time. I might be a little bias coming from Indiana.

Most people do not know that the NBA was so far down that the NBA Finals was tape delayed until bird and magic came into the league. The two of them bring basketball back and even grabbed nonbasketball fans like myself who only watched baseball. It was magical watching them play. I do consider myself lucky to be a NBA fan during the golden years on it.

A lot of times, people in Hollywood change their names so they don't overlap with somebody else with the same name. Katy Perry's real name is Kate Hudson (an actress). Michael Keaton's real name is Michael Douglas (another actor). Mark Sinclair was actually an actor from the 1970s.

So would I. The 85-86 Celtics would be a nightmare for today's NBA. The reason is this. Today's NBA goes for the three point shot, more than in 85-86. Larry would be a threat from the 3 point range and causing the defense to come out. This opens up the passing lane. If that happens you are in real trouble. Today's game is not as tough as back then physically. No flops back then. I look at it this way, today's game is full of pussies. Years ago was men.

@@jamesbush5675 The one thing i will say is that the nba, (refs specifically) reward flopping, so is it a case of men vs boys or a case of modern players KNOWING (a basketball iq question) that the refs will call certain things and using that to their advantage? Honestly as much as i love toughness of the 80s and 90s nba, it’s unfair to say bird, magic and Mj wouldn’t have flopped to get the extra edge.

Bird n Magic rivalry was the best in sports history. I watched that NCAA final n from that moment on as 10 yr old kid was a Magic n Bird fan for life. I loved the celtics n hated the Lakers though

He's still in the top 20 all time scorers who retired OVER 40yrs ago, before the existence of the 3point line. 40+% of West's FG's would've been 3's. Think about that.

From an old white guy who has been watching basketball since the 1960's, It's really hard to pick a GOAT. I remember watching players like Bill Russell, Dr. J, Wilt, Jordan, Kareem, and Bird. I would have to give a slight edge to Wilt or Jordan though. Jordan in his prime was unbelievable!! But then, so was Bird. It truly is hard to pick a #1. Let's just say they were all the best. NOW, if I had to pick a player based on being a true gentleman and great human being, that would either be Jordan or Clyde Drexler.
