@@marksmith8663 had a 2017 SD that I rode like a rental car, trading it in after 13k miles. Only issue was an ECU failure code. Disconnected the battery for a few minutes and it went away. I traded it for a 2021 890R Duke. Zero mechanical issues with either, just the same fault, that resets. My wife has a 2022 MT09SP. It’s a fantastic bike, produces the same numbers as my bike but they are different animals. The orange bike is only a few pounds lighter, but feels like a lot less. Believe too many get information from hearsay, not so much real life experience. Most major manufacturers make really good bikes these days.

The Super Duke in track mode with traction control set to 1 and the wheelie control OFF is still a very rideable bike but it becomes considerably quicker. The wheelie control etc. does hold the bike back a fair bit. I bought the Evo and don't regret it, because it sets up the proper sags on its own and the bike never, ever feels like it needs attention, it's just ready to go at all times. Theres also the anti-dive which I really like but only on smooth roads, it does make the front fork a little harsher.

I traded a 2021 MT09 SP in for my current Super Duke. It was a pretty bike but no braded lines brakes i up graded pads. Motor was nice but lacked the torque I was use to from the previous KTM dukes I've owned. Unless you owned a Duke you might not appreciate just how dynamic they are. I've owned both of these bikes in their standard form (without the electronic suspension). 2023 MT10 is my current bike and benefits from probably the most characterful and dynamic engine ever created. Agree with your verdict re the KTM, think it's absolutely the best all around performing naked, but it's so good, you need to be doing silly speeds for it to make sense. Downside is KTM reliability, hence why I have my second MT10. MT10 suspension is set a fraction hard for the road from the factory, but dialling out is easy and a decent set up can be achieved for road or track. KTM definitely has the most compliant suspension along with the best brakes and lives on UK roads well. I've bough my second MT10 (after stacking up all of the options) because it has that engine and is all day and even touring comfortable (when fitted with comfort seat), handles just about perfectly on the road (and decent if not the best on track), is as fast as anything to 140mph, has typical Japanese reliability and you can have enough spare cash for a year's worth of track days with the money saved against the SDR. Reliability is unfortunately the KTM's sticking point (but they are great when they're working) and from experience, I won't be buying another. Further points relating to the Yamaha comfort seat. First and foremost, it is bloody comfortable but also sits the rider roughly 1.5 inches higher. This improves leg room and also places a tad more weight over the bars, improving front end feel and strangely resulting in a sportier riding position. It's a double whammy and the one MT10 accessory I'd recommend over any other. Cheers.

It was a good read, can you please explain what went wrong with KTM because after spending more than year deciding what bike i am getting, my list was including Ducati SFV4, Ninja ZH2 and MT10 and so far the new 2024 KTM stole my heart, your feedback would really appreciated.
@Tig-Boy
@Tig-Boy 11 ай бұрын
Hi Tim. The KTM is superb when it's all working correctly. I suffered the screen going down, MTC warning lights on a brand new bike where the fault couldn't be diagnosed and which ultimately couldn't be resolved (the dealer swapped the bike). Cables rub and chafe through around the headstock causing further fault codes and finally, the bike would sometimes recognise the fob for the keyless start and other times it wouldn't even when placed against the receiver unit. Conversely, my new Yamaha MT10 has now covered 4k miles since June this year and has been 100%. Put the key in and it starts first time every time, doesn't use oil and has never had a warning light displayed. More fun than the KTM, but possibly because it's not quite as good in a few areas, so you need to be on your game and work a bit harder to get the most out of it. I ride my bikes hard, I'm not a nutter, but they do get properly used and the KTM makes everything so easy. You need to be doing something silly to upset it and the only thing to criticise is the OEM steering damper which appears to have little to no damping at the very initial part of the movement. I think it's mechanically quite solid and most of the issues appear to be electrical. I hear there are some that don't have issues and others become a nightmare, but I can only speak from my personal experience. Hope this helps.

Wait a minute dear oh dear! The sd tops out in 2nd at 125km/hr or so and the mt10 does exactly than on 1st. On 2nd the mt10 tops at around 150km/hr. So what is the point on doing roll-ons using the same gear on both bikes? This applies to many such comparisons on your videos. Otherwise, very entertaining as usually and thanks a lot for your energy and effort. I am a subscriber since day 1 😊

I purchased the SDR evo, 1000 miles and it’s great to ride on the b road twisties, in fact this is where it should live. It’s not really good for much else, track stuff would be fun. The elephant in the room is the reliability, mine has already thrown up numerous electrical faults and has a failed preloaded which after only 1000 miles is shocking. It’s on its last chance as far as I’m concerned, The dealer said they can fix the constant MTC failure fault and if not it will be going back. After coming from trouble free Yamaha and Honda for the last 5 years my first foray into KTM has not been great. I see KTM are offering 4 yrs warranty now on 2023 bikes which in all honestly you def need if buying one.

I have owned a lot of bikes, almost embarrassingly so. I recently owned a 2019 MT10 and it was an excellent machine but after living with it for a while I started to notice the budget items that began to annoy me. The dodgy cable clutch, ok quality switch gear etc. All acceptable but could have been better. Hopefully this SP model addresses some of that. I ended up buying a 2022 SD Evo, once I addressed ergos, moved the bars back etc. it fit perfectly. I never judge a bike until it has broken in and my body gets used to it and after living with the KTM not only do I think it is a better machine than the MT10 (Non SP) It could be the best motorcycle I have ever owned. I am sure the SP is a great machine but man, no way is it even close to how refined and almost perfect that the KTM is. It's always a matter of opinion but the over ruling factor for me on any machine is simply smile factor and the SD is in a league of its own for that. I am a huge Ducati fan and have 3 but I think the SD trumps them all. I cannot recommend the SD Evo enough!

Coming from the 2020 Tuono the choice was easy peasy - MT-10. It's not a Playboy centerfold bike looks wise, but it beats the KTM hands down IMO. I can't get my head around the origami Mantis look of the KTM. Also, judging by friends bikes it's a coin toss whether you get one that passed quality control, in which case they're quite nice, or a one that didn't and you end up spending your riding season with the bike at the dealer's garage getting fixed half of the time. Also, in Sweden the KTM cost way more to insure which just nails the coffin lid shut. EDIT: And i just plain *will not* pay a penny to get features already on a bike "unlocked" I find that appaling to be honest. Cheers for another nice vid guys!

Kind of hard to review bikes it you say what the manufacturer doesn’t want to hear, you gotta play the game. The only unbiased reviews are from people who bought the bikes with their own money. The main issue I found with owning large capacity,high performance bikes is usability. Unless you do track days,you can’t use even a third of the performance without doing your licence and winding up before the beak or both. Mid-rangers still have very good performance. Insurance and rego are less expensive. A Triumph 750 Speed Triple would do me . I think it exists. I don’t think you can beat the orange,appearance wise. For me the KTM Super Duke wins hands down in terms of looks and performance. The Yamaha looks like it needs to lose some bulk and weight.
@scottyuk

The low down grunt on the 1290's is the winner. Powering out of bends without waiting for it to spool up is what gaps people on other bikes. Do that bend after bend and you ease away. Having the instant power and instant shut downof power/engine braking means you have so much control with just the throttle. 👌
@VFactory-vl5fi

I can’t speak for the MT10 but the Superduke is probably the most usable Hypernaked there is. All the crazy grunt is delivered instantly. I got rid of the Tuono 1100factory because it was just too good at getting to triple figures without allowing me to satisfy that urge. I own a Gen 2 Superduke and it’s the best bike I’ve ridden other than the Gen 3.

I have a 2022 MT-10SP as my road bike and a 2020 S1000RR M-Sport as my track bike. I honestly think this is one of the best combos you could get to cover both bases. I don’t know why, but the 10SP is more than the sum of it’s parts. I suspect the sound of the CP4 (with a full system obviously) is the secret ingredient. As for the brakes - all the 10SP needs is a pad upgrade (Brembo SR for me) and proper bleed of the fluid. The Brembo master cylinder and steel braided lines definitely don’t need upgrading - yet another reason to go for the SP over the base model.

Pull the forks through the yolks 10mm and turn the bar risers 180 degrees (bars 10mm forward from standard) and the MT feels much better! Fit different risers that lower the bars 10mm from standard as well as 10mm forward from standard and it is better again. As for that special something, it's most likely the Crossplane engine, or the sound at least... It's got the Tuono-esque sound but with reliability...

SDR for me though slightly concerned that two KZbinrs gave up on them and handed them back because they were so unreliable. One swapped it for the BMW XR and the other for the MT10. I do agree the mT10 looks better in the flesh. Another great comparison video guys.

I understand the weight of this decision on Chop's face! I think it means that if you're serious about performance nakeds then you definitely need to own both of these amazing bikes at some stage - Both somehow quite different but at the same time both also undeniably brilliant great fun big power rides - But be warned that they do complicate a motorcyclists life - Because they're both so good that if/when you ever sell thse bikes, you will probably always have that little voice in the back of your head that (rightly) tells you that buying another one would be a great idea!

Fair play Chopsy, your production values are just getting better and better. I think that you're probably the best out there now. As a presenting team, you and Greg are great, it just works! I tried out a 1st gen SD back in the day, it was a revelation to me, being a youngish, new rider at the time. These days I ride a R1200R, the model preceding the 1250, same shape, etc. Obviously, it falls into the 'capable' category, not the 'super-fast' category. So, last week, I tried out the current SD. I went up the road crying in fits of laughter...honestly, it was too much for me. I gave it back to the Saleslady, I said "I love it, but there's no point in a follow-up phone call"🤣 Great work gents, thanks again👍

While I would choose the Suzuki GSX-S1000 over the Yamaha simply because it looks that much better and it costs about $3k less. I would take the Yamaha all day over the KTM, and I absolutely LOVE the KTM, it’s looks like it means business, because I do NOT TRUST a KTM for anything! I know the Yamaha will be all that power and fun and will start and run every time! The KTM??? 🤷🏻‍♂️. I just can’t drop that kind of coin on a bike I’m not sure of. If money were no object however, I’ll take a Super Duke PLEASE!!

What a surprising result, Chopsie! :-) Great review. I owned a manual suspension version of the SD...nice bike, but I really didn't like the riding position and I found the suspension harsh. Rode a mate's MT10SP and was very impressed. Really comfortable, and, being a Yamaha it will start every time.... A 10SP with Brembos and a full system would be great.

In 2022 I purchased the KTM SD-R EVO, before I could ride off the dealers lot it threw a code and locked out the suspension adjustment. At about 500 miles it threw an MTC Failure code and went into limp home mode. After getting it back the second time from the dealer it made it exactly 62 miles and threw another MTC Failure code. The dealer, even with the factory rep helping, couldn’t find the problem. I cut my losses and got rid of it at that point. Such a disappointment. After 7 year of owing more than a couple of KTM’s, I’m fed up with their electronic gremlins, dash units that “cloud up and rain” internally, and the need to shut the key off multiple times during a ride to “reset” something that has stopped working. Brilliant engaging engines, fabulous handling, and total crap electronics. No more KTM’s for me.
@daveo9844
@daveo9844 Жыл бұрын
All you need is a servo eliminator and no more MTC failures (of course you shouldn’t have too but it is what it is) Most preload issues happen by not letting the electronics cycle fully before starting.
@Dan-56
@Dan-56 Жыл бұрын
@@daveo9844 HaHaHa ! Servo eliminator would void the warranty, it was less than a month old, and the factory rep nor the dealership would touch it for any other problems after that…..yes I asked. And I know enough about the “System Self Check” that takes place and required waiting when first switching on, a procedure I followed religiously on all my bikes and cars. Face the facts…..KTM electronics are crap.

I'm getting old but buying the right bike is more than what the specs are and hands down the superduke has it. But the MT-10 SP is a classy beast, she's just so classy looking. It's like if Triumph was going for that cyberpunk design language I think this is what I would expect to see. Quite often we're spending a lot of time getting to our favorite roads and the one that punishes you the least getting there and still puts a smile on your face... and you can admire how classy the bike looks just parked wherever she is. That's a pretty special bike.

As a person who dislikes computers and the electrical gremlins they inevitably bring I do appreciate how refined these new bikes are. They ride so effortlessly and are so easy to go fast on but as I age and being the fastest on the latest and greatest machine becomes less valuable to me I have returned to the analog bikes for the riding experience they provide hairy warts and all as they actually require something of the rider and it seems more fulfilling.

I want to like your channel, you come across as very engaging and your passion for bikes is obvious and infectious. It’s just the whole video appears to have been filmed on roads where the speed limit is no more than 60 yet you appear to pay scant regard to this. This seems to be a bit of a recurring theme in your road tests yet motorcycling is so much more than speed and you miss so much riding that way.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket Жыл бұрын
The roll races cannot be compared by gear, not with these two bikes. You simply have to ride each bike in whatever RPM/gear which is most optimal to start a race at the chosen speed. Max thrust at any speed is achieved very differently between these two engines, but the point is to compare MAX THRUST, not some arbitrary gear which is very different between the two transmissions in the first place.
