My Lamborghini QV is at Tyrrell's Classic cars because the gearbox had started making horrible noises and there were a few more jobs that I wanted doing. In this video, we strip the gearbox and find out what the problem is..

A very expensive gearbox disaster narrowly avoided I think!👍 Personally, I wasn't too surprised at Ian's cost estimates for the components. The cost of bespoke engineering has come down enormously over the last decade or so with modern measuring and CNC machining techniques. What would once have been a few days manual machining by an experienced engineer can be done in a few hours. It'll be interesting to find out if OEM parts are still available from Lambo off the shelf and if so, what they cost. I'm looking forward to the heads coming off to see how the valves and valve train have fared. 👍

I'd be surprised if Lamborghini didn't have at least some degree of support around heritage parts given how other car markers do it. Even if they don't, I imagine they'd be reasonably happy to provide as much information was they can to let others have their own parts made - if not, the Countach was easily popular enough for plenty of people to have put together all the required measurements, drawings and such several times over. Amazing how things have changed, though. If I wanted to absolutely abuse my poor little hobby CNC I could make most of this in my home garage. Admittedly it'd take several days and may well turn out pretty rough but the whole machine cost less than these parts would have been even 20 years ago

Gears look to be rust pitting damage. I've seen it many times on gears and camshafts that sat for a long time. The oil washes away over time and the surface gets exposed to dew from the air. It forms rust crystals that turn into 36 grit carbide sandpaper as soon as it's used. Between the pitted surface and scoring from the rust crystals, the demise is accelerated. Put your classic cars on stands and run them for 30 minutes idling in gear every 4 to 6 months if it is not being used. This will evaporate the condensation and lubricate bearings, seals, gears, etc.

That was a feast for my eyes, whilst having my breakfast! As to see the gearbox, it was fascinating to see it all taken out! You see, once I had a racing car with a gearbox from F1's in the sixties! I went to Hewland and his guys showed me how to change the ratios for each race! Now you were talking about the loading on all the internals ok? My racing car was 750kg and we could not do standing starts as it would have broken or even smashed the gearbox! But once on the move so to speak it was a delight to change great!it shifted as quickly as you could move the great leaver!! That was really interesting to see so thank you Harry for filming it and Ian for showing us all too!! :)

Good to see the DRY ICE in use it's good for about 80% of aluminum and steel clean up. Perfect for even softer materials but copper is tricky and if its to soft will mark it. Doesn't make it look brand new because it does tend to spread grease about, but it doesn't damage the surface at all unlike dry glass beading , shell or other media it wont stain. Vapor Blasting that is a glass bead and water/soap process also cleans the surface and is the best by a long shot if you need to clean up old dirty aluminum and steel. It will remove 30 years worth of grease and make the part look like it just came off the shelf. I would also mention that powder coating springs can be a problem for a couple of reasons, one it's brittle and may crack if there is to much motion on the spring, It can also affect the temper of the spring depending on material/oven temps and time. Better off with warm and dry parts coated with simple old enamel. Oh BTW I have personally used all the stuff mentioned. Cheers

The reason springs break on modern cars is nothing to do with what material they are made from, and everything to do with the percentage yield they are run at! In order to reduce mass, and critically to package big wheels/tyres into ever more tightly packaged bodyshells, and to a make space for suspension designed with vastly better kinematics than on old cars, modern springs are simply run under much higher stress. Modern design, manufacturing and validation methods allow this to, mostly, not be a problem, but a higher stressed spring is simply more likely to break than one that is lower stressed!

@@maverick4177 Quite! Adding just a pinch of niobium per ton of spring steel would do the trick, I guess, but then, they would not break. Not ever!
