@@TheBullRider It's always a painful debate with stuff like that. I know on an NSX, I would never re-use, but that's a different VCG situation all together. As long as it doesn't leak then it's mission accomplished. Not sure I'm in a hurry to take mine apart, but at least if it becomes necessary I now know where to look for reference :)

@@LapoftheWorld Richard, your videos on this car are very helpful too. I have referenced them myself, especially that PITA coolant hose. Richard…..new to your channel and to the lambo world…!! I am a gear head at heart and love fixing my own stuff. I have been in the performance diesel truck world for about 10 years (don’t ask long story) and built my own stuff. Anyway….I had an 06 5.9 Cummins that made about 880 wheel HP, had to do a rebuild on it and had the machine work done by a very reputable shop, got it back rebuilt the truck and it sounded “funny” on crank up and after the break in period was down about 80HP….took the motor out and heads off, the cylinders and “markings” on them similar to yours, but was really no detectable by my fingers. Loaded up the motor and went to the machine shop (they knew I was coming) and they had a laser measuring/sensing device that calculated the wall scoring. Long story short the re/honed the block, new pistons went in and it was back to new again. I guess the point is just because we can’t feel it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. However, if you Lt car is running correctly, other than the oil show on crank up, I would NOT mess with it either.
@TheBullRider
@TheBullRider 2 жыл бұрын
Patrick, thank you for your input sir! I appreciate you sharing your story about your 5.9. Im surprised you had issues with that motor at all at that power level. That motor is rock solid! I am more of a 6.7 guy myself. "No replacement for displacement" right?! That is until the VGT turbo fails haha... How many miles do you have on your truck? You are lucky with an Iron block, with this aluminum block, there is a special coating on it called Alusil that cant be rehoned. I wish!!! With this motor, I do expect a full rebuild is in order eventually. I would like to machine the block and get Darton style cylinder sleeves installed that would make the motor good for life but the trouble is finding a reputable guy to do it for less than an arm, a leg, and a kidney!!!
@patrickgreen9747

@@TheBullRider LOL…..yeah it is crazy what the cost are to re-build a motor are these days. When I started having issues (all caused by a blown head gasket due to too much boost) I was at 175K, once I got everything sorted I drove that truck daily to 275K. I just sold her to a family friend as I recently had to move for my wives career. I loved to shock people when a 7 thousand pound work truck would gap a sports car from a dig. Most people have no idea what a decent built diesel can do. I really like your channel and your approach. It sometimes amazes me that people are afraid to dig into a vehicle/project. My grandfather told me when I was a young man that “a man built it, a man can fix it”…!! I love owning a variety of cars/trucks to learn about them. Ive had a lot of friends tell me I should start a KZbin channel because I always have a project going. Maybe one day.

Very interesting. Thank you. Just a thought: if the engine is burning oil, it might be a good idea to check bore's geometry and spacing to cylinders. Increased spacing and distorted bore geometry often leads to oil burning. You will also see washed carbon build up at the edge of cylinders.

@@TheBullRider you bet.... what strikes me to be odd, is that they put plastic chain guides....is an engine out the only option if they fail, or is there an access behind the seats from the cabin ?
@TheBullRider
@TheBullRider 2 жыл бұрын
@@ndpesicgroup Deuce, you can get at all the chains by just taking out the transmission as that is the "rear" of the motor. The old design used plastic chain guides and they eventually replaced with a lot of metal components with plastic hats after they started to fail on the Audi S4. Plastic is good because of the low friction surface that the chain travels over but there were some problems with the strength of the guide over time. Audi and Lamborghini say you never have to replace these components but this is far from the truth. I believe that this however has to be an engine out service as the timing cover seal is integrated into the cylinder head gasket. The timing video will show all of this, it will be fun!!!!

I have bmw. I know valve stem seals can go bad in them. I change most of major seals at 100k intervals as preventative maintenance. Only valve stem seals have not been changed and injector seals. I dont think so in this case Anze. The stock catalytic converters on this car are prone to failure. Coupled with backflow reversion sucking particulates back into the cylinders causing scoring its a recipe for a bad day. @TheBullRider
@TheBullRider Жыл бұрын
@@williamvolkmann8658 The block is made of Aluminum but they put this special "coating" on called Alusil. During the manufacturing process, a chemical or mechanical process is used to remove aluminum from the surface of the cylinder bore, exposing a very hard silicon precipitate. These exposed silicon particles, which under a microscope look like small islands, allow for oil to collect in the area surrounding them, thus forming the required tribofilm that supports piston and ring travel.

Muckman, I wish we could. With an aluminum block, they use a special coating called Alusil on the cylinder walls. This degradation of Alusil is the scratching you see.
