Unfortunately a lot of that stuff is dramatised to hold the viewers interest, it is off-putting I admit especially when it's so obvious. To make it worse, the crash, bang and wallop is interspersed with a clash of personalities to add more flavour.

Bernie and Lepu with the Chop Shop one, where they "customised" some old classic into a dream car they hoped to sell to a celebrity. Then Bernie and the Canadian guy, forgot his name, that hunted down a particular old classic to do a budget restoration on and make a fast profit. Both were a bit too fake, and theatrical with their constant arguments over ideas, costs, and opposing personality clashes.

@anthonyxuereb792 You probably have Anthony, they've been repeated a few times. Both series had a similar over-all format with Cockney geezer Bernie as co-star and a team of staff, working in an " under the arches" place in London. Always in a race to get them finished for sale of the classic, or hand over to the celebrity client on the custiomised one.. They both glossed over how much work actually went into the end result if done to a high standard. None of the episodes ever went off without some sort of crisis, or major setback to the completion deadline. Having worked in the vehicle repair industry many years; they were a bit too cheesy for me to rewatch them. 😁

Shout out to James for the work done on the E-Type. Looking at what he's cutting out, I'm in awe that he's able to put the new panels in the right position. That's a hard job! And also respect for not trying to remake panels when you can get reproductions. Definitely the right choice.

Machines running tape fed instructions were called NC as in Numerical Controlled. We had some wire erosion machines that operated the same way in our toolroom at Rists in Newcastle Under Lyme. We were part of the Lucas group too producing wiring harnesses for cars such as Mini and Rolls Royce.

Yes, in the late 80s early 90s I worked for a CNC company called OSAI-AB who came out of Olivetti Automation and Allen Bradley of the US. The CNC units were based on the Intel 8086 / 80286 / 80287 processors so IBM PC architecture… Olivetti were in the PC business by then too. I did come across early post-tape AB controls too. The Urraco engine was excellent… like 2 Lampredi Lancia engines put together.

Back in the day a friend of mine bought a bit of a basket case E Type, this was the days when they were just an old car. He took a lady out and as they both opened their doors together after a delightful evening the car snapped in half. It was ok when one door was opened at a time but couldn’t stand it when both were. Date over and car scrapped😂

The E Type took me back to 1978/9 when we spent weeks rebuilding a very early series one 3.8 two seat coupé, with the cut in footwells. It had been sat years in a waterlogged field after previous years of bodged fibreglass, riveted patches, and filler covered tin foil to the floors, and structure wouldn't pass the MOT. Virtually no original parts were available, apart from a factory bonnet that came loosely assembled. They have to be cut to length and the rear shape hand-made to fit the bodytub. They're not easy to work on as a lot of the panels were lead loaded to fit at the works when new. We had to hand fabricate so much after careful measuring and cutting as we didn't have a rotisserie jig back then.

Ian, I was interested to hear your story about the use of CNC machine tools for the manufacturing of the Lamborghini Uracco’s engine. Lamborghini was not the first manufacturer to use this technology. Wikipedia tells me that the Lamborghini Uracco was made between 1972-79. Contemporaneously, the Leyland P76 was made in Australia from 1973-75. I was a production engineer, working at Leyland Australia, with responsibilities for many P76 components. We were intending to use 5 axis CNC machining centres (made by Repco (as in Repco/Brabham F1) in Melbourne) to machine engine blocks and gearbox cases. As an aside, the P76 uses a variation on the Rover 3.5 ltr V8 which itself was derived from an earlier Buick V8. Both these engines were made using traditional transfer machines. The use of Repco CNC machine tools promised cheaper costs for tooling and greater flexibility in parts machining. From memory it was planned to have 8 or 9 machines and allocate them between parts depending on demand. A further aside, I had previous experience using the Repco 5 axis CNC machine when I worked at Lane Cove Engineering in Sydney. There it was used for high precision general machining work, including aircraft engine assembly jigs for QANTAS airlines. We were all so excited the day that our first Repco machine was to be delivered. As the crane was lifting it off the back of the delivery truck its clutch gave out and our new machine fell three or four metres to the concrete floor, braking its frame. This through our whole tooling/testing regime into disarray and we were forced to quickly acquire the old Buick transfer machine and modify it for our much larger engine. Yet another sad story in the P76’s short but chequered history. But the fact remains that except for the failure of a crane’s clutch, Lamborghini AND Leyland Australia might have been using CNC machine tools for engine manufacturing in the early 1970’s. Had a Mk1 E type decades ago. Horrible thing. At 6ft 3ins it was dreadfully uncomfortable. However, Bentley S2....never had one but my friend did. What an absolute joy to be in. I have a Bentley S1 with the same color interior as that S2. Similar condition as well. Amazing what a Leatherique treatment can do to rejuvinate the leather. I love how Iain focuses on leather manufacture and quality details. Would love to see more vids on that Bentley!

I ran NC (numerical control) machines back in the 70s and 80s. The tapes started out as paper like a teletype machine tape. Then they started using mylar. They then went to CNC where they could load the program into the machine with floppy discs. They later went to doenloading directly from a mainframe computer directly to the machine. I assume they still do that. I had to edit a few programes the engineers got wrong and couldnt figure out their own errors. I loved one upping them. 😅😂

The e type engine cradle is made from Reynolds 531 alloy tubing (a lot of wonderful steel bikes were made from the same product) and I’m told if it’s rusty you shouldn’t weld it, but replace it 😅

Old leather is beautiful, even with some wear, fade, and creasing, and I have seen such horrible 'connolising', where it looks like someone has painted the seat with emulsion paint over cracks. I've had two cars done and the feel is wrong, dry and papery, and they only looked good in photographs, not up close. I suspect it's what dealers do to make it look immaculate at a glance. I won't have it again, original or properly replaced for me now! This Bentley seat looks wonderful as it is.

Seeing those Bentley S2 seats reminds me of what I use to rejuvenate my leather seats/dash in my classic cars - aloe cream. I use Hawaiian Tropic Lime Coolada Aloe Vera Cream, and I let it sit for about a day at room temp, then wipe it off. It leaves no grease, no film, and it soaks deep into the leather to bring back the softness and smoothness.

Couldn't agree more, concerning the leather. I just looks so... funny - i.e. funny-funny & peculiar - to see a vintage car* with brand new, absolutely patina-free interior. The 'best' example I have seen lately was a ironically a Ferrari 365 GTB/4, you know the Daytona Coupé that gave the seats their name...
