Duke Nukem 3D's development is extremely interesting, and nowadays we have more footage from the later and previous betas shared by the devs. From what I've heard they've got the files but can't legally publish them, however they show it off occasionally(Check out "Duke Nukem 3D - Pre-release Footage Compilation")! It's honestly quite inspiring to see, in a game-developer point of view. They all show the progression the team made learning as they went along, throwing things at the wall and seeing what stuck around, scrapping everything and re-starting many times, learning the Build Engine and its revolutionary potential, learning 3D modelling and rendering, experimenting with game, level, mechanic, character designs, themes, a little bit of everything. It's not easy making a game this good, and its history shows! Game development usually didn't take this long at the time. You can kinda see how the team behind this game couldn't handle making Duke Nukem Forever, under the stricter rules they had to follow. The way they worked, they needed to experiment, to learn, to focus, to refine, and with that costs trial and error, time, which they hadn't been given the luxury of, under pressure from staff above. DNF prototypes 2D/1996, Quake/1997, Quake 2/1998, Unreal/2001, were all inspired, creative, cool. DNF 2011 was made by people that had seen all that hard work thrown in the trash. That would break anyone.

Thanks! I've heard that in a couple of places now, so I'm definitely leaning towards it being some kind of bug. Mr. Caliber makes the most sense to me. Appreciate your comment :) Cheers

5:19 The image on the monitor is, I think, a screen capture from a full motion video adventure game called Under A Killing Moon by Access Software. Quite why it was being used as a graphic by the designers of Duke Nukem 3D is anyone's guess.
@lepopcornnaisseur5468 ай бұрын
The same guys who made Crime Wave? I can see some similarities between that and Lameduke.
@lancebaylis31696 ай бұрын
@lepopcornnaisseur546 Yeah that was Access Software. Under A Killing Moon was a big and popular title around the time Duke Nukem 3D was still in development, so my guess is that 3D Realms used this screen capture from it as a placeholder/wink to the game. The scene in question is from the end of the game, though the Duke texture crops it to just the woman in the scene haha
@revenantevil6 ай бұрын
Also, in an early build of Duke 3D, they also used art ripped straight from Under A Kiling Moon's box as a sky box. They must have been quite fond of the game!

We almost got another Tekwar, but the developers were smart enough to seriously redo the project and we got one of the best FPS of all time. In contrast to DN4ever, when the game, as far as one can tell from the leaked demo, was about as ready as LAMEDUKE. I think in Blood the Ghost Town level (the first one in Farewell to arms) was inspired by level 6. Wide street and tall buildings, just changed the textures. Thanks for another great video!
@revenantevil2 жыл бұрын
Man, can you imagine if they just thought 'this will do' and released it as a finished Lameduke? So glad they nailed it. I get what you're saying about the DNF prototype, but honestly, I had way more fun with that honestly! As much as I love lameduke. It is totally lame. lol. You might be onto something with the Ghost Town level. I'll have to refresh my memory. Honestly, thanks a bunch for watching and commenting, it means a lot. :)

I love TekWar for how raw it is but damn am I glad we've got Duke 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior as good as we did. They all went through major changes in development. TekWar actually also did, plenty of unused content in it and differences in the shareware demo, buuuuut it's still TekWar xD

To be fair, in 1994 this would still have been GROUNDBREAKING in the corridor shooter genre, it feel liks Doom meets Blake Stone with much better verticality and a degree of extra interactivity. Boy, I'm so glad it had time to cook though.

Hai, thank you for showing this, Love to see what it was and how the game became what we like. I'm still sad to this day that we lost the plasma rifle. My first exposure to it was actually in a Doom mod ha! Also this wide makes me dig up my memorys. I rember that preview screenshot in game magacines of obvious another beta version of Duke. Was a city like looking map in space or the moon. I belive that one still had the plasma rifle. Then again maybe it was a screenshot from this version of the game of one of the other episodes hard to tell. I never played lame duke. but its super facinating to see it. Hope you can show us one day the other remaing levels / episodes.

I’d be very interested in hearing from some of the developers how they got from this to the masterpiece that is the final version of Duke Nukem. The release version is such a huge step up this version reminds me more of a capstone game.

Well, the bubble does 1 thing, it gives you 100 points. Also, few little things just because why not, the sky texture from the last level, can be fixed with like, the original texture that it uses from the example Build engine game, which it also is used for episode 2. And so can the mandroids be fixed if you re-use the femanoid's AI for it. Quite excited for episode 2 video! and, i hope you mention that it is an early version of the original episode 1, and in an episode 3 video, you could maybe merge it with episode 4, because, the 4th episode is, like, more of a test episode really...

Awesome stuff, seriously! I love learning more about Duke's history and anything about the betas :) Tho I wonder, out of curiosity, why not using EDuke32 instead of the World Tour version of the game? It'd retain the original sprites for the medkits, for example. Is it because EDuke is a hassle to set up and to make videos with?

There's a cheat one can use in this build: type in DNA (possibly an acronym for "Duke Nukem All) and you get full ammo, all weapons, and all items. Like DNSTUFF, but it works once a game I think, though I could be wrong. It could work once per level, but I forgot to try it.
@johnedelmann6711 Жыл бұрын
And another Lameduke cheat: DNW, possibly short for Duke Nukem Warp. You can go to any level in the episode, but some of that is buggy as certain levels for some episodes (namely the last levels in an episode) don't load and crash the game.

I always found lameduke fascinating. The final DN3D is a massively superior game, but I'd be lying if I said that some stuff from this version wasn't fun and charming in a way. I wish DN3D dabbled more into large open city levels like this, though I imagine they had to cut down on level size once sloped surfaces were added in, since these are a major resource hog. I wish they'd kept the multi-level elevators, just changed the control method. The safety shutter and escalator effects are available in the final game, just unused. The first one works just fine, lowering the sector ceiling once you shoot out the glass/force field underneath it. The escalator effect is even more glitchy since it doesn't carry you down smoothly like here, but kinda bumps you down step after step. The roof boss is interesting, since it's made of sectors and moves through the sectors making up the building itself. The first time I've seen something like that in a commercial build game was Ion Fury, i wonder if it's been achieved in the same way.
@revenantevil Жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I agree, lameduke definitely has its charms. In regards to the open levels, it would have been awesome. The engine is clearly capable, but as you say, I expect it all came down to performance. Agree about the elevators too. It would have been a nice feature. Perhaps they could have just had an 'up' button on one side and a 'down' button on the other. But, the way they work in the final is fine too. I wonder why they didn't use the safety shutters? It's really cool. I was pretty shocked to see it for the first time! The escalators could definitely use more work. Perhaps they were just too tricky to code, so they decided not to bother? Who knows. Interesting, though. And I didn't know they were left in the code for D3D. So, thanks for letting me know! :) The roof boss is crazy. It's cool to see that they were experimenting with this stuff. I'm having trouble remembering where we might see a similar effect in Ion Fury... where abouts is it, if you don't mind me asking? Great comment. You're clearly more knowledgeable than I am! Thanks again mate, cheers!

I played this at some point but never managed to find my way through the levels so was just debugging through it mainly, well done for actually solving them! The bubble- is it possible this is the screen or visor for a space helmet or suit? The powerup would potentially allow duke to go on spacewalks; space existed as an environment in the final release, and could insta-kill duke soo.. there were space suits in the final release but never any powerups along those lines.. Exit rooms on the space station look like they resemble the HAL room from 2001 Space Odyssey; considering that 1968 space film is refd in the eventual Duke3d release, could it be an early reference? The music and also some of those explosion sprites, are indeed from ROTT. I always loved the proto Octo-brains, they looked way kooler conceptually than the release octos.

3D Realms had an extremely slow and iterative development style even in the early 90s... WOW!!! I bet those kind of semi-inept and overly controlling tendencies served them well over time! Duke Nukem Forever coming out "When It's Done" was certainly a casualty of this bizarre management style.
