Fraud, but not fraud. LA wasn't laying around on a couch shooting PEDs and winning the TdF, he was out training his ass off while using PEDs and winning the TdF. Also, all the top competitors were using PEDs, so in a way it was a level playing field. SO ENJOY!

People that don't know the sport think LA just threw his leg over a bike and won TDF's! Hmmm it doesn't quite work like that. Armstrong was a superbly conditioned athlete who was also gifted with a superior physiology. EPO was rife in the 90!s so he wasn't alone. Was Indurain clean?

Regardless of doping, Lance Armstrong revolutionized how the best pros ride today. Lower gear/higher cadence, relying more on cardiovascular strength than pure power (Jan Ulrich). Constantly spinning 100-110 while Jan is barely pushing past 80. Lower gearing and spinning is twice as efficient which is part of the reason he was so successful. EPO does however have a much better benefit for those who rely more on cardiovascular strength, which is why the argument that EPO responded to his body better is true. But that's not because he was born that way or had some type of bodily advantage that no one else had, it's because he trained and doped smarter than anyone else. Would you say that's cheating? I would personally compare it on a smaller scale to someone who lifts weights....do you drink your protein shake before or after? How much do you drink so that you're not getting to little so you don't gain muscle or to much so that it gets stored as fat? Or what about coffee, do you drink your coffee in the morning before work or the second you get home from work? Basically the entire point that I'm trying to make is that you need to recognize the effects of drugs and utilize them to provide the most dramatic increase in performance (yes I know protein isn't a drug). This is what exactly Lance and his doctor's did. They utilized the effects of EPO and incorporated it into his training/riding style in the most effective way. Look at the best climbers today, not as fast as Lance but they're still all spinning the shit out their gears. (and probably still taking EPO, test, transfusions and other drugs on a smaller scale). I still love Lance, it's been very hard for me to rip my childhood idol's poster down in my room. Sorry about my rant

I know very little about cycling. Once the Armstrong scandal came to light I became interested in the sport itself and read about other cyclists and their experiences. Cycling is a difficult sport, I cannot fathom riding one day in rain, mud, and cold let alone three weeks . I don't have strong feelings one way or another about LA. Yet I find him fascinating in that he understood the combination of specialized training and PED's and was willing to cross many lines to win. Lance did not achieve this alone. Seems there was much corruption up and down the line and he knew how to use this to his advantage. What is most distasteful and ugly about Lance Armstrong is what he did to other people to achieve those wins. The destruction of other people lives is about as low as you get. If that was not a factor I don't think there would be so much controversy in my opinion. I do not think he "ruined" the sport as I read in other posts. It takes more than one and an entire apparatus for this to happen. This--from someone who knows nothing about cycling and looking at it from a neophyte's perspective.

If all cyclists used drugs it would still not be an even playing field. A persons hematocrit is the % of red blood cells in their blood. An average male has a hematocrit of 45. A haematocrit below 40 could be an indication of anemia where a high hematocrit could indicate congenital heart disease. Lance's was 38-41 unusually low for a pro cyclist. You must have a low hematocrit to use EPO or blood dope as (1) It will be more detectable as the UCI hematocrit limit is 50. (2) a high hematocrit may cause death as the blood becomes so viscous with an increase of red blood cells. This increased blood viscosity and decreased cardiac output and blood flow has caused the heart attacks and strokes of many athletes that have abused EPO in the past.

People just go on about Lance being a cheat but every big name athlete out there takes performance enhancing drugs. It's not really cheating because everyone is doing it, you have to if you want to win! But of course nobody can admit to it or their career is over. Everybody is cheating everyday drinking coffee and red bull just to go to work or whatever, but when athletes do it it's cheating. Such double standards!

Silverarrow Doping standards are scientifically arbitrary. The data supports the fact micro dosing of EPO produces similar results to sleeping in an altitude tent. One is accepted as being legal without consequences the other will results in a two year ban from competitive cycling. As a physician, I know there are several different PEDs which are currently not tested like AICAR.

He didn't get caught because cycling officials didn't want to catch him. They condoned doping for decades, simply because it made no sense to even attempt to eradicate something that was so ingrained in the sport. Add to this the fact that Armstrong's historic and dramatic dominance of a level - albeit doped - playing field was elevating the popularity of the Tour and professional cycling itself to an unprecedented level.

...but they found an escape goat in Lance out of jealousy. He is still my hero

It upsets me that sports have gotten to the point where honesty has vanished and the urge to win has overcome the urge to compete. As a kid, Lance was a hero of mine, also being from Texas. My dad used to see Lance training out in Hutto and Manor all the time and I always thought that was the coolest thing. While it is unfortunate that he was doping after all, it is probably safe to say that the next 99 competitors were doping too. Similar to bodybuilding, it has become a part of the "competition". That being said, talk all the shit you want about Lance. He overcame fucking cancer and if everyone had not been taking PEDs, I have no doubt he would have still won many races. It was his drive and ambition that propelled him past his competitors, not the PEDs. (I still don't support PEDs)
