Nice job! I like the rubber matting you added on the bottom and the top. I removed the back seat out of my '98 jeep wrangler tj and built a deck/trunk in it's place a few years ago. I used 3/4 marine ply and matching outdoor carpet to boot. I went so far as to wrap the deck around the top edge of the jeep tub and rear roll cage. When the tailgate is open, the center top section can be slid out temporarily to accommodate larger items. Like yourself, I normally keep the typical car stuff in trunk. I used large storage tubs for organization and water proofing just in case. The front edge of the box extends up just behind the front seats. That's where I have a hi-lift jack mounted.

Nice tool box, Bob! I do have a suggestion though. It does need to be bolted down. I speak from experience. I was hit from the rear in a company van about 10 years ago, when I drove a slot machine repair route. The only thing that saved my bacon was the fact that there was a cage between the cargo area and the passenger area. Tool boxes, tools, parts, and other miscellaneous items flew and bounced in all directions inside that van, with one exception - the single tool box that was bolted to the floor and padlocked shut. This isn't something I read about, saw on Facebook, or something that happened to the friend of a cousin of a guy I know - it happened to me. Our manager raised holy cain with ownership, and within about 3 months, every van in the fleet had 3 tool and parts boxes and locking cabinets bolted into each van to prevent cargo from impaling someone in the event of an accident. Just something to think about.

I swapped out the back seat in my '87 Olds Cutlass Ciera for a box that's designed to hold 8 5-gallon buckets with their lids snapped on (~26"x54"x12"deep inside dimensions). Built of ¾" subfloor OSB (free dumpster finds), it sits on a platform that is custom-fitted to the un-floor-like floor. I used it for buckets only a few times. Most times, it's used for groceries, dumpster wood, scrap countertop granite, and whatever else is bound to become project fodder. Think of it as a small pick-up bed in the back of the car. If I need to haul more than 3 people, I can easily swap the back beat back in. 5:40 Suggestion: CNC a set of ILTMS speaker grilles.
@n8guy8 жыл бұрын
Really nice addition to your rig! Since you asked, I would make a couple changes. 1) The back section of the box is just going to be super hard to use. I think I would make the drawers really long, able to be pulled out, with dividers to allow for separate sectioning. 2) I would orient the ribbed mat 90º so that the ribs are running front-to-back. Sliding anything on them as-is is going to be impossible, particularly things like grocery bags that will catch. I realize the idea of the mat is traction, but I think this will end up being a hassle to use. But great project, and congrats on the video sponsorship!

You should mount it on under side mount industrial sliders that bolt through the floor of the truck to the frame. It will secure it in place in case of an impact, and give you the option to use it as a pull out work space in case you need a work area out in the field. When I worked in fire services and EMS the supervisor vehicles had similar pull out storage that allowed for easy access and work area.

I made a storage box for my FZJ80 as well. Wound up using automotive carpet and staples as opposed to rubber. I suppose the rubber will last longer. Just thought the carpet would be easy enough to replace if needed. Also, for the areas above the wheel wells, I wound up cutting two pieces of plywood and contouring them to the sides of the cargo area. Then, used a piano hinge to that they would both open. I use that area for random extras that don't fit in the drawers (recovery gear, tools and first aid for me). Great video!!

I made a box similar to this for my 4Runner. Few suggestions for you. #1 I used turn-buckles to secure it down to the floor. Required some drilling and sealing but very secure, and doesn't move at all. #2 I would attached some loops or tie-down points to the top deck. I use these on mine to secure camping gear or dog crates while out camping or 4 wheeling. #3 those side tool boxes you are planning, expect them to be a PITA! I did some flip-up ones for mine and they never really turned out all that useful especially considering the amount of extra time they took. All in all good job!

On my brothers earlier Land Cruiser he made a similar storage system all nailed and glued butt joined joints. Some of the joints failed over time and a lot of rough roads and use. With his latest Cruiser he remade the same box system but with rebated corners and with trenches for the internals and all glued and screwed. He also reinforced all the external corners he could with 1/16" thick aluminium angle that he attached with "Sika Flex" polyurethane adhesive and a few screws while it went off. It does not look like failing any time soon. I don't know if you have Sika products in the US but you do have Devcon who also make super strong adhesives.

Next time you could try to build the enclosure in two parts split down the length of the vehicle. Then you can keep the "wings" and drop each one in easier. When I used to build up false floors for subwoofer enclosures in car audio builds, that's what we'd do to make it much more manageable.
@BrassLock8 жыл бұрын
Thanx for that good idea, which I will use to design my "picnic kitchen" setup for the rear of my small Honda Fit. The rear door surrounds and wheel arches intrude into the space available, but such a split system could overcome that limitation.

I've always loved making stuff; I remember using a rasp and a vise to make wooden swords out of stakes as a kid. A lack of tools never really bothered me. Don't get me wrong, now I've got a table saw, plunge router, orbital sander, etc, but I didn't always have those tools. For everyone in the comments section bemoaning the fact that they can't build stuff because they don't have the tools, I should say this: Buy a few sheets of plywood, a drill if you don't have one, (if you really can't afford it, a hand-drill and screwdriver will do), some screws, two hinges, a handle, and some wood glue. With those tools, you can make a box. It won't look fancy, it won't be perfect, but you made it, and that's what matters. Again, thank you Bob, for another excellent video.

Very nicely done. I like. I laughed at the velcro.... that thing is so heavy, it's not going anywhere. And with the seat in place there, I don't see how it could hurt you in an accident. Now, A circular saw, sitting on top of the box, in an accident, could become a projectile & kill you.... I built something similar for my Escalade.... Instead of black paint & rubber though, I covered it in a light maple laminated flooring.... Visually, it looks amazing, and I get a lot of compliments about how awesome it is, and how it matches the tan interior, and it it is nice. Functionally, anything touching it rattles... And anything set on top slides around like it's on skates.... So, FUNCTIONALLY, the rubber is a much better choice. So, good call on the rubber mat. I also like that stuff is out of sight.... Nice project man. Well done.

You could add some Eye Bolts to the outside edge to give you a way to strap stuff down to the box that you don't want rolling around. Hi Bob - Thanks for the great video. I was half way through with my Jeep drawer storage build when I discovered yours and got some great ideas from you. I particularly liked the rubber mat idea, so that's what I did. The problem I ran into was the use of Liquid Nails FuzIT. After reading the instructions, I laid down the beads of the stuff on top of the box. Then I immediately placed the mat down and noticed the beads of glue did not flatten out as I had expected, even after rolling it out and placing weight on top of it. Probably no one would notice except for me, but I was very disappointed in the product for this application. Of course there is no going back now. Anyway, I am grateful for your detailed video and the terrific ideas.

Definitely a cool idea. I personally would have opted for something more modular / easy to dissassemble. Not sure if your Land Cruiser has a bottom hanging spare tire or a trunk spare tire (looks like its in the trunk to me), but a modular design would make it easier to remove everything and get to the spare tire without having to empty out the drawers, in addition to the modular compartments, you could have installed that top cover mat with those velcros so you don't have to leave an extra cut in the mat making it less seamless and theft deterrent. The big benefit to a modular design would be that you could have different boxes designated for what you were going out to do, if you go out and do odd jobs in other places frequently, you could have one for each style of job and swap then go, with a secondary benefit of being able to remove that box once you get to the site and use that as your tool box, perhaps with a secondary top access to the drawer.
@TheWeekendMedic7 жыл бұрын
Did you consider latches or catches to keep the drawers closed? A slide bolt or other catch would prevent the drawers from sliding in and out, wearing out over time as the truck stops and starts. Very nice project, bookmarked for when I swap vehicles.

You could add pistons to the lid that covers the storage area on the back so it will easier to put things and take them out.

Hey Bob, how about a quick update, or a new build like this based on what you've learned you need or don't need in the truck? Thank love the show.

Thanks, I've actually been searching for something good to use to glue a rubber mat similar to this to some sheet metal to make my new floorboards for the motorcycle. Going to try this liquid nails stuff.

That's an awesome idea. I love the security factor of not being able to see anything through the window. Great build!

You're reading my mind Bob. I have plans drawn up for something similar for the back of my Subaru. Great to hear your take on it!

Safety hazzard guys! I love the build; technique; idea and everything. Please note however the danger of a heavy object such as this box lying loose in a car and what it will do in case of an accident! Please make a mention of it in your video.. Ps keep up the good work and clear build videos

I definitely plan on locking it down.

awesome box!, it would be a great Idea to bolt it to the floor in case you have an accident with another car.Thats a lot of weight which would keep moving forward if you stopped abruptly from 60mph. love your work!
