Grasshoppers are an annual event. Depending on the prior summer's egg laying and this spring's moisture and temperatures, some years can see a boom in numbers of grasshoppers and other years a bust. One thing is for certain, fly fishing with big grasshopper patterns can bring some of the largest trout in a trout river to the surface, hunting a big, easy meal. In this video we encounter a season in which a small tailwater river chugs out gin-clear water that enables us to spot the huge trout, while a boom in grasshopper numbers has these giants hunting grasshoppers. This is the once in a generation grasshopper event that we stumbled upon.

Fantastic photography! I’ve fished August hoppers in the Bow, the Crow, and other Alberta waters and there is no doubt it is wonderful every season. But your water conditions as shown are like nothing I’ve ever seen. Thanks for sharing!

Absolutely a great time of year. But as we mentioned, it was a once in a generation set of conditions and man was it fun. And also why we held it back for 2 years so people don't charge there in hopes of this when it just can't be. :)

Wow what a beautiful day and the emerald green water was amazing!! Will be Hopper dropper fishing Tuesday here in Idaho. It’s hot so shorts and minimal gear for sure!! The hoppers are everywhere here this year. Most I’ve seen!! Great video coverage on those hoppers!! Nice bows Amelia!! Woohoo and hell yeah all in one !! Man that take on that brown and bow in the end was epic!! Nice bow as well Dave!! I enjoyed every second!! Great job folks!!

We were so happy to catch that river as clear as it was, as it normally flows a lot milkier. Hope your plans to hopper dropper fish this week turn up aces for ya. Perfect to get out and take advantage of the heat and seeing those critters everywhere. I (Amelia) was really beside myself that day for the fights and incredible trout landed. Glad you really liked this one. A crazy fulfilling day of sighting the fish and then getting those big mouths to come and eat our huge flies. Thanks again for watching.

Just love it, this has my heart pounding. NZ season is just two weeks away, rivers are still dirty but hopefully they will clear in time. It won't be long before the brown beetles and sedges hatches turn up and then in early summer the river is alive with Cicada song. It always amazes me how a dead stretch of water can come alive when a hatch starts.

Well it's good to induce that kind if reaction in a few people! 😁 There's nothing like a day on the water with a hatch and trout taking notice. I bet thise 2 weeks can't go fast enough for you! Hooe you have a great start to your season.

Are Drones going to be the "new" guide tool??? Not all water is this clear but, boy does it give you an edge... You can even "scout" up or down river to see if it's worth fishing.
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing Жыл бұрын
Guess you have to figure out which comes first, the spotting then the decision to fly the drone or finding fish by drone then the spotting. If you're ethical it's the former and the drone is simply a tool to share the art of spotting and another angle of what you discover first with your eyes. All the best.
@SDPBALLCOACH
@SDPBALLCOACH Жыл бұрын
@@jensenflyfishing Really not saying if it's good or bad, simply another way to find fish. Bass fishing is marginally a sport as the fishermen are literally taking videos of the lakes to search for fish. Next will be scouts out searching for Deer, Elk, etc. And directing hunters to the animals.. It was bound to come to this...
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing Жыл бұрын
@@SDPBALLCOACH well, there is a fair/ethical chase statement and there are lines within that statement that really need to be honored. To us, if you find it through your own means, wonderful, use other vantages to share as you've found. But never to find/locate fish & wildlife, that just wreaks of unethical to us. But, with 8B ppl on the planet, define "ethical" for anyone else. We're just sharing our line of how we feel about things for us. :)
