Land Rover Defender Entry Options - Keyfob, Remote App, Activity Key & Apple Phone / Watch

We look at the various options to unlock your new Land Rover Defender 2020.
There are the keyfob and then the activity key but there is also the phone remote app and also the apple watch app... we look at these options but it does not all go to plan.

I wonder if there is a conflict on the Apple watch when BOTH apps are installed on the iPhone. Have you tried deleting the old Remote app and just having the new one on the iPhone?

Good question. I just deleted both apps off the phone, restarted and then added back the old LR Remote app. And unfortunately, the same issue. It locks, but doesn't unlock on the Watch. Crazy. The phone app works fine.

Simon...My D/Sport is keyless entry and I have the old (black face) app. I have only once gone to lock the car with the key in it and it did not respond but that is using my hand/finger on the door handle. The App will lock and unlock and run the Park Heater plus give all the other journey information. Now I am sure I read that the Activity key does disable the normal key fob when it is left in the car because the idea is that you leave the key safe in the car whilst you go white water rafting wearing your snazzy Activity Key through rivers, waterfalls and snow! Now if Joe Burglar breaks in, sees the key and tries to drive off, the key fob is zapped so should not work. Yes I do keep my keys in a tin box overnight which I take on holidays as well...some hotel car parks are right outside the window! It looks to me that the key fob only remote should be safer but is not linked well with either app....and that in the end, a bunch of old metal keys is the safest of all!! The old activity key used to disable the other keys but with the new activity key you should not need to bring your keys with you at all so there is no point in disabling the keys... but as you know I dont have a working activity key to test !

Yes th remote spp should work as long as you have an active "in control" subscription which i think is standard for 3 years from new.

MY23.5 Discovery does not have an Activity Key available as an option or add on. I have a 2017 D5 and use the Activity Key every day when i surf. I hope they sort out an Apple Watch solution by the time my new D5 arrives.

Yes if you have keyless entry on your Defender then the yes they emit the same low power signal for the keyless entry.

I did ask at the launch of the new Range Rover and it was not something that is being offered at this time. Also the activity watch cannot support 2 cars - so i would need one watch for my Defender and one for my new Range Rover ( in my dreams )

As far as i know this is still not possible - also not possible on the new 2023 Range Rover Sport - it may become available later with a software update. This would make a lot of sense as Land Rover cannot supply the "activity watch" due to chip shortages - if they could enable "apple key" then this would make a lot of people happy !

When we bought our 2023 we ordered it back in Feb, and just took receipt last week. It also only shipped with 1 key fob and 1 valet key. We also ordered the clearview rear sight camera and the upgraded digital gauge cluster but it shipped without the clearview rear sight camera and arrived with the analog gauges, even though we still have the 11.4in screen and the HUD. Will you do a video showing us how to install the clearview rearsight camera and upgraded digital gauge cluster?? I imagine many people will end up wanting these upgrades once they become available since everything is shipping with the lower tiered items

In the 2020 Jaguar i-pace (similar apps) the watch app does not lock the car and does not show the location, however info and range do work. The (new) app on the iPhone works for locking and location too.

On the Land Rover configurator if you start with a 2021 Defender that has NO keyless entry, then adding an activity key will mean you have to add keyless entry for an additional £725. So could that be why you can't get the activity key to work with your car as it doesn't have keyless entry?

This is what i was told originally... but then I was told officially from Land Rover technical that it can be added to my car...it is after all just a shrunk remote.... I have just heard via the dealership that Land Rover are going to help me resolve this...so keep watching ..

Very interesting, so here are a couple of questions relating to the activity key for you. 1. If you use the activity key to operate the car do you have to have the physical key present as well? In other words, can you drive the Defender just with the activity key? 2. If you lock the physical key inside the car with the activity key and the car is stolen what do you think will be the chance of your insurance company paying out?

Hi David -I think you can go out with just the activity key with this new type of key - my thinking here is it appears to just be a miniature 433Mhz remote. As for the insurance question that is an interesting questuion.

Purchased an Apple Watch for my Defender for ability to do activities w/out carrying key. WAS able to start and stop vehicle from watch however; lock and unlock function from either old or new app did not work. After a week of working on communication issue with Land Rover Customer Service I gave up and took Apple Watch back. Activity keys from LR apparently backordered. They blamed pandemic.

In my previous BMW I once put a spare key in the boot and walked away with the other key in my pocket the car bleeped and would not lock until I removed it! In some countries you have to take a spare key with you when travelling through that country!

Just did the same three tests with a keyless entry 2021. Car still locks and unlocks and the key inside is not affected nor prevents locking. I suspect the activation of the activity key option is what can disable any key left inside.

I think I'm going to be struggling with the technology in mine when it arrives🤔 never had cruise control, only ever had air-conditioning in the last 4 years and never had or needed to have keyless entry. If you were to lock your car with the App (old or new) or an Activity Key and leave the actual car key inside so wouldn't loose it you'd no doubt put the key out of sight be in the Glove Box or in the boot. You wouldn't leave it in sight so the key wouldn't need to be deactivated when locked by other means.

If you had the keyless entry, I wonder whether the phone would act as an alternative keyless entry, just by using its NFC [near field communication] system? I believe that some cars do have this functionality now, which means that you can leave your key at home and just carry your key in your pocket. Walk away and it locks. Walk towards and it unlocks and once inside it enables the push button starting. I wouldn't hold my breath because, as you have found time and again and illustrated yet again above, their software implementation is very flaky.

My Defender will not allow me to connect to it via InControl, it’s been back to the dealership twice, been escalated to the higher powers at LR and now has to go back to the dealership for a 2day holiday... I’ve also had a activity key on back order for 2months. 😅 I might just stick to the humble key fob. 🔑 Thank you for the heads up on the old app and Apple Watch, going to give that a bash on my Disco.

Just a check, but did you go through a vehicle pairing routine when you first added your car to the inControl account, whereby you press and hold for at least 10 seconds the Land Rover Assist button in the overhead console? I didn't for some reason, and I had to first delete the account and create a new one before the pairing routine became available to me.

However they called me today and seemed to have managed to get past the fault. I completed the holding of the service button sequence you mentioned and it’s all up and running. @@L663 yes I now have both vehicles on the account and working well. My issue was the Defender thought there was someone already connected to InControl even though there wasn’t... LR seem to have now got past this hurdle since it was raised to a higher power, thankfully without the need to change the module!! I now have the Defender selected on the new app and my daily Disco Commercial on the old app, which means I can start and unlock it from the Apple Watch in the mornings... Bliss!! Thanks a lot for the heads up on using the old app with the watch, works a treat.

According to the Land Rover activity key video, when you lock the car with the band it is supposed to deactivate the key in the car and yes, the band on,y works Once you can pressed the band against the rear door near field sensor and then you have 30 seconds to unlock the doors. I cant lock my keyless car if there is a key inside it at all, drives me mad as my partner has a habit of putting her key in the arm rest and I keep thinking my locking system has gone buggered!

Hi this is on a new Defender with the activity watch, it is recommended that the key is stored out of site as the key is only disabled passively ie the buttons will still operate but the vehicle cannot be started so technically some one can get in the vehicle and open the luggage area

So I tried on my defender this setup Engine Running 2021 Defender X-dynamic has the keyless option. (USA) Key inside- spare outside and tried to lock. Car will not lock just beeps Both Keys outside - Tried to lock, door will not lock just beeps Android remote app will not lock car that is running. I want to be able to lock the car while running if I need to get out to get something and keep the climate running for passengers or if only my dog is my car so I can get back and drive away. not efficient to use the app. Will ask the dealer when I bring it in since mine didn't want to update and my voice command for nav doesn't work, other commands do even cancelling a route It just doesn't want to input an address to go to.

Hi - can you turn off the car - lock the car - then use the app and set it to Climate ? on my car this starts the engine to warm up the car - not sure if it works to cool the car... its not hot enough in the UK ! Would be interesting to try driving your car after leaving the key outside ... so start the car on your drive then take the keys back to the house with the engine running and see if you can drive the car....it should know the key is not present and show some warning ? never tried it myself..

​@@L663 oh that will work, but I have encountered an issue where reception, was a bit lacking. since it doesn't detect the key inside in my opinion should allow for door locking. or at least have a pet away mode like the teslas have in some capacity. There is a time limit of 30 mins and prompts to drive before the time for remote start, resets. (unsure if it will auto reset if the vehicle is off for prolong period of time without driving it) as for driving it once the car is on key is out it will allow you to drive it I had my Dad park the car while I went to pick up some take-out order and was probably approx. 20feet/6 meters away it will show a warnings beep but does allow normal use. I have a Ford mustang with keyless go and behaves the same way Haven't tested how far it will let you go or if it will behave differently if its moved a good distance. as for weather it gets pretty cold and really hot. so we can get snow about a 12-20 inches to blazing heat in the upper 100F/37C so full on climate is really nice.

So did manage to figure something out.. I can just use the metal key to do the locking of the doors with the engine running and taking the key out... in a way I'm like, should have seen that one a mile away. But I did bring it to the my dealers attention for some feedback hopefully to reach some ears in landrover. Too bad I cant just use the key fob but its something nonetheless.

If you unlock you Defender with the old app on your phone, it will show (as it did with the Sport) a red UNLOCKED on the watch - and I am finding I can lock it with the Watch. That said, I cannot unlock the Defender with the Watch under any scenario. Here's what's interesting: It did work in the Fall of 2020. The display on the Watch app was better too... the type fit in the hexagons and it all looked a little better designed. I don't know if they bug is a visual bug to the mapping of the button on the software (thus, preventing it from recognizing a user's input) - or if Land Rover simply has identified some other issue (or in pure conspiracy speculation: is using this as a way to get people to buy Activity Keys?! I doubt this.). Here's a test, I can lock the Land Rover Velar (as you did with the Sport in your video), but I also cannot unlock it - so I am curious if you can unlock the Sport after locking it with the Watch? If you also can not unlock the Sport, that points to a software bug and not necessarily an issue with the Defender itself.

My 110 has keyless entry, but I think this applies with all Defenders. If you put the key in the boot, the car will beep and not lock. I am curious if yours will?

That was all well and good till that modern solenoid gizmo played up - my first car had a wire to pull to engage the starter motor - a simple and beautiful system that you could also use to turn the engine over to check for a spark etc ( from the engine bay and inside the car...)

No difference to the app or watch with keyless entry. For some reason my account isn’t supported by the new app but the old one works as you illustrated and the watch is the same - shows lock status but doesn’t allow you to change it. Obviously the ‘boot’ button on the key is replicated with keyless - ie you can just open the boot with the keys in your pocket, leaving the rest of the car locked. When you shut the boot it auto-locks and rearms the car. Quite handy when navigating kids and dogs in the car park. However, it also means you can open the boot, throw your coat in (with the keys in the coat pocket) and shut the boot - auto-locking and alarming. They’ve obviously figured that one out, though, because it beeps and opens the boot door again (phew!).

I'm sure you have the best intentions but it highlights problems which you are able to deal with but the less informed customer may suffer with after paying hard earned money for. As you know this is not an isolated software problem with the new Defender but one of many. Land Rover should stop chasing new variants and models and concentrate on making current models reliable instead.
