Adding an Extra Key / Activity Key to Land Rover Defender L663 using GAP IID Tool !

In this video we show you how to add an activity key or new remote keyfob to your Land Rover Defender using the GAP Diagnostics IID tool - this is currently in Beta test.

Simon. Not sure but if you leave key in the car and lock using the remote facility on your phone. Keyless entry may still work and therefore anyone touching the door handle will simply allow access unless you have disabled this facility. I may be wrong here but please check🤞

Don't forget that there's a lot of us out, who were only supplied with 1 key! Second key was supposed to come a few weeks later! But now has been told could be up to 12 months!! Can we get one off ebay, then have it reprogrammed? £240 is a bit steep for a activity key!

Yes this was the idea behind the video - to help people get a spare key programmed. I will try with a used key and see if that works

Might be worth a re-visit now, the remote app has re-introduced the Apple Watch app, and it does allow you to lock/unlock the car. Also, with the increases in theft, I wonder if the activity key is in fact a good way to protect your vehicle. *IF* you have all three keys programmed in the key module, presumably you cannot replace any of the existing keys meaning thieves can't add a 3rd key if they gain canbus access to steal the car. Hopefully the key module isn't something that is quick or easy to swap out... worth a look I think!

I love my activity key…it’s super useful with my lifestyle. I swapped the band to something my fitting to me. It’s a 22 mm strap, btw.

Hi Grant - when camping it was useful. I need to test it works with the keyless entry.

@@L663 I use it mostly when I Ski or go riding in the woods on my 4wheeler. I make my wife wear it when we are out and about together so we both have the means to get into the car and dive if we get separated. Especially because LR only supplied me with one key. I did however get a second key from my dealership after a 11 month wait after I took delivery. Was happy that I at least received everything I ordered on my defender.

Don’t swim laps or ocean swim with it, although it’s waterproof the battery drains super quick.

The thing is if you left your key "under the mat " and go off sailing only to find your car has been stolen ? , leaving that key in the car that will take some explaining to the insurance company ? Anyway hows the new one going ? Great video

I was told by my dealer the key left in the car is disabled when the car is locked with the activity key. Maybe Simon can test that?

Totally agree, if the car is stolen the insurance company will ask you to hand over the keys. You’ll have a job explaining why you haven’t got them if they were in the car.

@@billybob1511 But whos to say it wouldnt be towed onto a loader , Ive heard of many stories of Rangies ect being towed away , Try explaining that lot to the Insurance company " Well anyway I was told leaving the key to the car ,even when locked is disabled " ,Yea right , Any car insurance having to pay out a very large of money to the Owner ,because his car was pinched will be falling over themselves to pay up even if the keys were left in the car . !

If your concerned about the key being found maybe hide it in the engine bay. Plenty of choices out of sight.

I thought Landrover had stopped Activity Key as an option? Wanted one for Disco 5 but dealer advised it was no longer available.

I must have missed something, I thought Landrover were now locking the KVM to stop additional keys being added. We’ve had a spate of vehicle thefts where cars have been stolen shortly after being valeted and the finger of suspicion has been pointed at the valeting company for adding there own keys. Can the KVMs still be locked ?

As you can see in the video the KVM does appear to be locked by the "service mode" feature. No one can add a key to your car unless you place it in SERVICE MODE which a car valeter cannot do. Its a good point you raise though.

RFA is locked for 18-21 models that data writing is one time only so a new RFA is needed when new keys are added. Just from the video, it looks Defender is using a new RFA that goes back to the same old thing years ago you can add a key easily.

Random statement - Road next to me had two cars stolen mid-morning yesterday. One was a 20plate Velar. They could tell from the remote app the car was temporarily parked up not far away and they disabled the GPS - suggests thieves know where the GPS is on our Land Rovers, taking only a few mins to remove and suspect the Defender is no different. I have the Ghost immobiliser which hopefully does it job. 😬🤓 I should add, the fob signal was cloned from their home, faraday boxes/pouches a must

I am going to look ok at this I have a few videos planned 1 fitting a tracker above sunglasses holder 2 fitting Iblue immobiliser 3 disabling keyless on car 4 disabling keyless on fob The ford keyfobs apparently go to sleep if no movement for 10 minutes

The new iPhone 14 Pro can withstand about 6 metres for up to 30 minutes underwater - it has an IP68 rating to IEC standard 60529 - but be careful around sand and the ocean as the salt water's corrosive nature can cause more damage than bargained for.

@@L663 I was about to leave a comment to say exactly the same thing. By the way, I don't know how or when, but I also initially couldn't find the AppleWatch app, but I was surprised to learn that it had somehow automatically downloaded and installed itself. I had a service on my Discovery 5 about 2 weeks ago and whilst they did the service, I went for a walk to a nearby shopping mall. On the way, I kept getting notifications on my watch every 15 minutes or so asking me if I had forgotten to lock my vehicle. Both the dealership and I were surprised as obviously, they had the key. I can only think that the mechanic had put the key somewhere safe in the workshop and not in the vehicle. Check the AppleWatch in a few days, it might magically be there.

@@andrewjones-productions The notification are from the Landcover Remote app saying you have not locked your car and your system is set to display notification for the remote app on your apple watch. I think using the remote app to put the car in service mode stops this being an issue. The landcover remote add on for apple watch was removed with the new version as landcover are pushing their activity key.

No you need one key to prove you own the car... you may be able to get the dealer to give you a free key - as really the car should have come with 2 keys !

What happens if you lock the key in the car with your phone, then grab the door handle to open the door? Will the car think you have the key on you?

I think it disables the key until its unlocked with the phone.

If you lock the key in the car it will be deactivated and you will not be able to start your car. Lookup SMART KEY DEACTIVATION in the owner manual for the explanation.

Maybe. Thanks for sharing the video. As a software engineer I just find it frustrating that companies like this feel they need to reinvent the wheel and do such a bad job of it. Let's be honest, their Pivi system isn't great either.

NB be very careful locking your keys in the car with the app; the car is prone to going into sleep mode (esp. after a few days) and you’d be locked out from the app

That remote app is absolute rubbish. Never works when needed. Even with full bars on both phone and car. Everyone on the apple reviews says the same thing. Madness that LR can’t hire a decent tech team to make this reliable.

Purchased a 434Mhz key from you recently to add to my 2023 L663 in Australia. Put vehicle in Service mode and used latest Gap tool but unable to add key. Get the message Process Successful but Key Not Accepted and then next message on Gap tool Programming Fault E9 - any ideas? Cheers
