Great video, sadly missed a major thing. There's a Philips head screw right on the glue line of the interior plastic waterproofing goop, which screws into the top of the lock actuator. If you didn't know it was there you'd miss it because it's covered in mastic stuff. If you undo everything this guy shows and don't find this screw, you'll never get it out without breaking it (ask me how I know!). So the lock actuator has 3 torx head screws in the door jamb and one on the inside panel of the door

As a new subscriber to your channel, I didn’t realize you have a D2. In addition to my 57 S1, I have a D2, but mine is a 99 with 03/04 headlights conversion. Years ago I had the same problem and I bought 2 actuators: 1 for the same door you replaced and 1 for the rear 5th door. The rear door was a piece of cake and was replaced very easily. The front passenger door wasn’t that easy and now I know why. I was not able to remove the actuator because I didn’t realize that I had to unbolt and move the window frame out of the way. So...to a drawer it went for a long time. Now after watching this video I have enough info and motivation to start the process again and give it another shot. Thank you so much for creating and uploading this video!

Great video, and great to hear an Aussie, in America, driving a British car! Very multi-cultural. I need to change some actuators in my Disco 2 and hesitated when confronted with having to 'fiddle' with the window jams / frames. After watching your video it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would be! Thanks! On another note, I changed the actuator on my rear cargo door as it wouldn't unlock with the remote key. Upon changing it, and then testing it, it still wouldn't work, then I realised you have to press the unlock button on the key fob twice to unlock the cargo door. It then worked. It made me wonder if I even needed to change the lock in the first place - I just needed to press the key fob button twice lolol. At any rate, at the same time I removed and rotate through 180 degrees and reinstalled the factory spare wheel carrier so that it would allow me to put bigger tyres on the car including the spare without clashing with the bumper. So all was not lost in this exercise. Thanks again for your videos - they are my first stop when I am contemplating doing some repairs and maintenance on my Disco. Cheers! Michael, Alice Springs, Australia.

Oi! How long have you been in the Alice? I lived there for 6 years from 95 to 2001 before the wind blew me Darwin way and farther after that. That trick you mentioned about the Tyre carrier eluded me. I never even considered that idea and instead bought an expensive adapter that bolts on. I probably only know Jo Gorge who runs the Rock Tour but if you see him around say Greetings from us.
@michaelrobertson51956 жыл бұрын
Hi man, wow - small world! I know of the Rock Tours, but I don't know Jo. If I meet him I'll say hello for you! The winds really blew you a long way from Oz! I arrived in Alice from Perth in 2011 for what was supposed to be 3 years lol - and I'm still here hehe! I learnt the wheel carrier trick from one of the many forums and it worked perfectly, and is a very cheap solution - required 2 new holes to be drilled into the carrier, but other than that it is simply bolt off, bolt on. Great to hear from you!

All four doors actuator on my Disco 2, 2001, do not open with key fob but all will lock with key fob. Atlantic British tech said that sometimes driver side actuator could cause all 4 doors to malfunction. Has anyone had this problem? Mr. Foreman, bit of work but great video....thanks for sharing.
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures7 жыл бұрын
Greetings Sandra, my skills as a mechanic are on the basic side so I have no definitive answer. I would hazard a guess that the fob is faulty. In our disco there is a button on the dash to lock or unlock doors, if that works both ways I'd think the fob button is a bit buggered. If the matter is resolved I'd like to know what the problem was. Cheers.

Greetings there, I had some keys cut for our Disco that worked on the doors but not for the ignition. Hi there just watched your video and found it very informative. Got a similar problem myself and was wondering does the drivers keys also operate the door handle lock. As my drivers key does not turn in the lock. Also my fob does not operate both drivers lock and passenger lock it’s only on locks both rear doors.
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Greetings Johnathon. I’m assuming you have a discovery 2. The drivers key should unlock and lock all doors on the vehicle. When we bought ours 2nd hand only the driver door and rear hatch door actuators worked so since we’ve replaced the passenger door and both rear door actuators. Our only key was a replica of a replica so we went to a proper locksmith and he could with the help of the vin number reproduce an original key which works great. Is your key an original or a replica. A poor replica may be the reason it doesn’t turn in the door lock or try some wd40. the drivers key is another obstacle in addition to what was shown in our video if that actuator needs replacing.

Great video - congratulations! Did my front door lock yesterday (thanks to your video). I put a blob of "Blu Tack" inside sockets if I'm removing or putting on nuts/bolts so I don't lose them (like the paper I guess). Now, all great, but for the life of me I can't pop that interior door trim panel back on!!! Can't line it up! Any tips?
@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Greetings there. Glad the video helped. As for the door panel, I seem to recall some plastic studs that attach to the panel and plastic retainers to receive them that live in the door itself. If its not lining up or snapping into place checking all of the above for being wonky or out of alignment would be my first stop. Sometimes the retainers come out with the studs and maybe that could hinder getting the panel back on. Can't think of another likely cause.
@intestinalworm12025 жыл бұрын
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures Someone told me to start pressing from the bottom (two studs down there) and work up the sides and then across the top. I was starting from the top and one or two studs would always fall out inside the panel (might have to get some new studs as well). Replaced 4 of the 11 studs (4 studs a bit wonky and the worse for wear). Started at top outside corner, worked my way across the top then down - all good and secure now. Read that it's a small DC motor (inside actuator) that causes these actuators to fail; some buy a replacement motor (very cheap) and solder it in place?

The joys of owning an aging vehicle hey Mr foreman. Seems rather ironic you're doing repairs, my car's been keeping me busy too...& broke! First was new tyres, then I found a loose bearing hub plus the other side was stuffed, then I found play in the lower ball joints, yesterday I spent 4.5 hours replacing valve stem seals & 3 weeks ago I replaced a steering rack boot. THEN....there's the "panels off" inspection of the rear end, resulting in many paint chips & unnecessary damage as I ultimately didn't find the rust I sought. THEEEEEEN there's the handbrake adjustment & all 4 wheels off for cleaning. It just doesn't seem to stop! Oh' & I washed it yesterday, now it's raining!!!

***** I always refer here first for issues I've not previously dealt with. autofix.com.au/blog/articles Mainly for us Aussies, but the website has a wealth of knowledge for the DIY enthusiast, & if you don't find the answers there you can message the guys on facebook. In my case, I've had a good run with little maintenance needs for the past 3 or 4 years. Caught up with me a bit though. The result of buying what you need, tools etc, for any particular job, is that you have it for future use from that point. & you only need buy a quality tool ONCE. To further amuse you, when I replaced the bearing hub I ran into an unusual problem. The torque wrench I own is so old it wasn't capable of the required 250ft/p of force, capable of only a mere 140! A mate suggested I weld 2 torque wrenches together....mmm My solution, after researching that a Foot Pound is measured by applying 1 pound of force at a distance of 1 foot, was to convert my body weight into pounds, so 120, then use a 10" long extension bar on a 1.2ft long breaker bar (doubling it's capability & by default my weight)...& stood on the end of it! So given my crude calculations, I guess I was able to apply pressure around the 240 to 260ft/p range.

I don't know if you've attempted the job or how far you've gotten if so, and assuming it's a Disco. Good vid. Now can you please do one for the rear door as that's the one that doesn't work on my disco 2 😂

Try popping out the LR badge and spraying the mechanism with grease stuff. Worked on mine with no need to replace any parts and this was a over a year ago in a cold climate.

Yeah, gently pry off badge they say and spray some Penetrene to free it up - haven't had to do it yet. With that assembly, make sure the seal at the top is intact and not letting water in!

Tailgate is easy. Also, try here for rear door locks (write-up) - few differences to the front passenger door and easier job overall (driver's door is the most involved): www.discovery2.co.uk/Reardoor_lock.html

Cheers Richard, it's easy to let the comedy roll, an insensitive individual once said about me in that I can never truely make a mistake as I never know what I am doing. He was a little bit right curse his soul.

That was funny - and helpful - did you need new pants when you shut the door to test it and it initially didn't open? :-P

Thanks Richard. I wasn’t too worried about the door not opening, being well aware of my many inadequacies I tend to take precautions and made sure the drivers door was open and the panel was still off. Anything to avoid soiled britches.

Fair play to you sir - did look like a mild bit of initial panic starting to spread across yer chops though. Still, I think I'd have preferred that reaction to have been on my own chops, instead the bloody fury, after having wasted 90 mins gently prying everything apart, and wiggling the window frame out to replace the lock in my OSR Disco 2 door, only to find the lock that I'd bought from a breaker (D'oh!), only locks and doesn't unlock, just the faulty bloody lock it was replacing!
