Repair Front Window Regulator and Motor on a Land Rover Discovery Series II

Can't open your Front Power Windows on your Discovery Series II?
The moving parts on a window regulator wear out, and if you hit the window switch to open and you hear the window motor running, but the window does not lower, most likely, the links on the regulator have come apart.
Watch Doug, our Land Rover Master Technician, show you how to remove the front door panel, using panel popper W107T, and then access and repair and replace the front left window regulator and window motor.
The repair is the same for the front right side.

Thanks for this very helpful video. When I first pulled my door trim off and saw the mangled and twisted old regulator, with the curved gear sitting in the bottom of the door, I didn't know where to start. I began to curse and get the shits and went ***k it. Now that I've watched your video and gone and fixed it, its really very easy after all. One thing Doug doesn't mention is that the factory motor connects to a cable that's only about 6 inches long. This plugs into the wiring harness behind the sheet metal. The two connectors at that end are held in place by a white nylon clip attached to the sheet metal; you can see where the clip attaches to the sheet metal behind the small clear plastic "bubble" in the moisture shield. If you're replacing the motor, you need to release the clip from the sheet metal so that the connectors can be pulled down and disconnected, since on the replacement motors the 6" cable is not detachable and is plugged directly into the harness.

Well done video. I just replaced the regulator in a Discovery 1 this past weekend, wish I would have seen this video first. An FYI though, there are no Philips screws in a Discovery, they are all Pozidrive screws.

Thanks! This is excellent, yet another fix for a problem I have on my D2. One thing I've also been wondering about is an intermittent warning light related to the air suspension - it seems like a fairly simple system; a compressor, air lines, sensor and airbag, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested in a brief walkthrough.

The bar that holds the glass to the regulator arms is replaceable. I’ve just bought them for about 31 pounds they’re all on eBay.

The rollers are the weakest point of the regulators. I just found a seller on eBay who has made replacement metallic rollers. I have not purchased them or know the seller. I do plan to purchase a set or two, as I do not know how many rollers are on each regulator. Is it hard to do the rear windows? My rear left rear side has dropped off. I've taken the door case off and had a look around and after watching this video and another it seems as though its the nylon washer problem. The rear one doesn't have nearly as much room to maneuver the mechanism out. Is it even possible? cheers

Yes, the procedure to replace the window regulator on the '03 HSE is similar to the process for the D2.

Hi there. If the regulator motor has failed and the window is stuck shut, how do you bring the window down to get at the bolts the window glass rail. Thanks.

If the motor is inoperable and the window is fully closed, the removal process can be a little difficult. The only way to remove the regulator is to remove the door panel and remove all hardware that holds the regulator to the metal sheet panel of the door. This allows the glass and regulator to drop down into the lower part of the door and allows better access to the hardware that holds the glass to the regulator. The removal of that hardware can be done from inside the door, and then the lower rail of the regulator can slide sideways to remove the glass from the door. Then slide the glass back up into the door frame and hold it up with masking tape over the top of the door frame and which will allow you to work on the regulator and remove it from the door.

@@atlanticbritishrp when you say all hardware, your meeting not just loosen those one bolts but remove all of it and the whole thing will drop down to the bottom of the door? Mine is stuck shut with half the glass connected and half not. I can't see the bar completely to know if it's corroded or not attached the section I can see it looks great

The regulator is a common problem verses the center console switch.

Easy to check by pulling the switch panel and swapping the wiring between left and right switches.
