When designers come up with stuff like this, where service items are so difficult to reach, they should be prevented from ever working as designers again. Preferably by throwing them off a roof into a wood-chipper. Even worse, the designers of the LR3 should have been forced to own one for 20 years and carry out ALL the servicing and maintenance themselves. Maybe that'd be too sadistic though?

My tip, Always cut the belt gradually until it slowly releases the belt tension, do not release the belt tension by undoing the tensioner bolt, because as you get to the end of the thread, the spring tension can ping it off and break the thread lug off the cylinder head, best to learn from the mistakes of others.......😉 Great videos as always... .....thanks

Great video as always, thank you! You can save time by not undoing any ECU and TCM connectors. There is enough space when you remove the coolant pipe that runs across the engine, and the bracket that holds the wiring loom at the back of the engine. You can then pull the wiring loom towards you which creates enough space to get the belt cover out and replace the belt. I always insert the new belt tensioner first, easier to locate it correctly in its insert without the extra tension or presence of the belt. The new belt simply will slide over the tensioner when lifting it over the wheel.

Well Christian/Vera - I did the job yesterday (under a gloriously sunny warm Corsican sky unlike poor you!) and although my method varied slightly from yours, it was 100% successful, not even a bing or a bing and no spurious messages on startup! My 2 specialists refused (because it's too much trouble no doubt); & the LR stealer in Vannes had asked €2500 (Timing belt at same time with body off). The only other vid on YT showing the job is terrible and unedited. Your vid gave me a logical progression and saved me from working 'in the dark' which is often a confidence-breaker. Now it's done I'd say it's fiddly but not difficult. PS The coating on the toothed side of the belt is I believe fibreglass not Teflon. I had the same issue as you (break in the coating, which implies it's 'normal') but my belt is a Dayco (as was the installed belt). NB neither belt had a date or rotation arrow. Keep up the good work, brilliant channel ( the regularity is so important to subscribers as you know) and a major contribution to the Discovery community.

Fantastic, you are so brave! Had mine changed at 100,000 miles by the same method using a specialist- LR wanted to do body off. I’m so impressed, even 10 minute jobs take me hours because of rusted parts, clips that go ‘ping’ across the garden and replacement screws and bolts that are the wrong size. I always end up bleeding too! Well done.

Thanks for another great video well done When I did this job on my D3 it didn’t appear to have as much space as you did to access the belt and struggled to do the job with my big hands One tip though it’s recommended to cut the old belt to get it off as unscrewing the bolt in the tensioner when it gets to the last couple of threads the tension still present can tear the last couple of threads out and you may have to take the body off to re-tap the thread Regards

I recently had this very belt changed on mine as part of a 144K (mile) service. Whilst I'm fairly sure they didn't lift the body, they did at least have the advantage of having much of the engine out of the way already to change the front belts, oil pump and water pump. I can see why it took several days.

Before disconnecting plugs where possible label and draw a couple of arrows facing each other. Use 'AAA' on both sides of first plug/socket, 'BBB' on the next etc. If needed use paper labels tied on with string etc. Yes it takes a few seconds but will give a huge boost in confidence that all plugs are replaced properly and with the right orientation. Often it is obvious but as you get tired a little help goes a long way.

I love your videos & I don't even own a D3, but Land Rover made the D3 far too complicated for me to work on. I like a 4x4 I can spend time driving rather than more time spent fixing it, that's why I drive an old 02 Discovery 2 & only give it a routine service once a year, & if anything falls off & it still drives then that part probably wasn't needed in the first place. Things went badly wrong for Land Rover after Germany sold what was once a great 4x4 off. If I had the chance to buy a new 4x4, then I'd buy anything but a modern LR. Have you ever considered doing a "retro" series of videos on a D2 or a real Defender?
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 2 жыл бұрын
Well, we would have to buy one first. Since we don't really make any money with KZbin, our content is mainly based on what we own at the time. Buying a car just for KZbin content, we would need a lot more subscribers and, most importantly, viewers. But if that time comes, we would love to get a Defender. A Discovery 2 is most likely not an option because of emission standards here in Germany. We cannot drive one as a daily driver here in our area unfortunately. 👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

Yes it can be done but! You have to question the sanity of the design engineers and who approved it, when the recommended method of changing a serviceable item a belt, is too lift the body off... It’s similar but worse on some engines with rear timing chain which have known reliability issues. I can accept on an exotic car etc where if you can afford to buy it, you can afford to repair it.

German inginuity, engineering know how doing stuff well. What a mixture british design flaws with you sorting it out however i was shocked at the aftermarket bosch belt with tooth issue however for the original belt not breaking in over 180000 kms shows at least land rover got something right. Imagine if they had japanese electrics and lexus quality mechanics. There are some rubbish toyotas and some good suzuki engineering as proven by the use of suzuki engines in experimental aircraft in aeromomentum engines. A very underated company. Their main fault is their finish on parts as they corrode badly but the rest of them is normally really solid. Built to a price so corners are cut but even maruti suzuki vans like their 800cc van are hammered in india but are very reliable and cheap but mechanics earn poor wages so its very cheap to service them compared to europe or usa.

Hi guys, once again, great video and brilliant team work, I think Vera has the most important job, finding lost parts! ...could I please ask what make of camera you used? ...would Vera be available when I do my belt, I've no doubt I'll drop something 😲😲 ...again, thank you for your videos 👏👏👏 Regards Norm's with UK Disco 2, 3 & 4, you have to love a challenge 🕺🕺🕺

You need to get a harness that will support you horizontally over the engine in any orientation you choose. So many times I've seen your feet sticking out - it must be painful experience laying there for hours on end. Shouldn't be too hard to build using x-y table from a suitable cnc.

I know nothing about land rovers, but would have been easier to access that belt from the dash area? And why is there a timing belt on the back of the engine? I admire your patience and knowledge.
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 3 жыл бұрын
🤔 Because it's the belt for the high pressure fuelpump, and that's where the fuel pump sits.👍 Please don't ask me why they put it there, I don't know 😉 🙋‍♀️ Vera

That sounds like an engineering think tank, well let’s see the engine is out so let’s put it here, then along comes the designer! Ok we can put the body here? Engine well we can squeeze it in here! Maintenance?what maintenance, belts, plugs, filters, not to worry they can lift the body off! Easy access then. :)

You can't get to it from the dash area as the bulkhead aka firewall is in the way. Why is the belt at the back? Because the engine is a PSA design and was designed to be also used in a transverse fitment, where it is at the side and not a problem. A technician used to doing this job can complete it in under 30 minutes in a Discovery fitment.
@ferstuck37
@ferstuck37 3 жыл бұрын
@@DiscoGruffalo thanks for the info as you say a tech can do it in 30 mins but is that in the transverse orientation or as shown either way it wouldn’t be cheap. :)

Hello, your channel is amazing. I love it. Can you tell something about plugs in 2.7 tdv6? Are there spark plugs easy to change or only glow plugs which I heard are horror to move and get to?
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 3 жыл бұрын
We have had no problems with the glow plugs on either our Land Rovers yet. (We had our Freelander for almost 150000 km , and the LR3 for about 100000km ). As for the spark plugs, we only have diesel engines so I am not sure about the cost of replacing spark plugs on a petrol engine.🙋‍♀️ Vera

Hi! What a great video, thanks again and again. But One question, though : Have you ever changed the rear crankshaft seal just behind the big fuel pump pulley? I have to do mine as there's a big leak that was a part of the causes that ruined my crankshaft bearings, lacking oil pressure.
