There are almost always some surprises in car maintenance and repairs. Especially when you don't expect them and when you think you've done everything, there's always a new broken/leaking part. Like you have a broken starter motor/clutch or a leaking water pump. I spent several evenings repairing our diesel estate this week, replacing the metal timing chain cover, oil pan and doing a full scheduled service. During the test drive, diesel fuel smelled and at home I noticed that the high pressure fuel pump was leaking from the o-ring of the return line. Simple and cheap fix but unexpected. Thanks for the great video to both of you, once again.

L319 has a single compressor relay. And these relays are prone to stuck closed with contacts getting welded together. Hence Land Rover used to give a free relay when you order new compressor from them. Hence as a precaution they should be changed as faulty relay could cause compressor run away and eventually getting seized and fuse blown as a result. In L405 aka queen they modified it by providing 2 relays connected in series and both monitored by ECU. The pressure sensor is mounted in the gallery so that they can also monitor the gallery pressure if the gallery pressure is more than 4 bar, the exhaust valve is briefly opened to reduce the gallery pressure before starting the compressor. This is to reduce the initial load on the compressor. Most compressors can be fixed by repairing the air drier element as it normally gets clogged with moisture and that causes the compressor to go weak.
@Vera_and_Christian3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info. We will try to fix the old compressor and keep as a spare.
@richardwilliams86673 ай бұрын
Yes and a good test for failed valve block is to watch gallery pressure whilst driving if it rises slowly it’s a leaking F or R valve block. A fault will occur after so many times it activates exhaust. Gallery should stay consistent or only very slowly fall. Watching the compressor activity is interesting. It starts and briefly runs to make sure all is well and the gallery is ready without always fully charging the tank to 17.7 bar. Also the software was updated at some point on the Hitachi to allow the pressure reduction for the starting of the compressor. Make sure in older D3s you have the latest Hitachi software. Also after now rebuilding my hitachi so many times I even have the crank bearing failing and seizing the compressor is another issue it will also blow the fuse. The component failure fault is always mysterious because it doesn’t give many clues.

Hello from Spain, Vera and Christian. Thank you so much for your videos-they teach us a lot about our beloved Land Rover Discovery 3 and 4, and you both make it such an enjoyable experience with your humor. Thanks again! I have a Discovery 3 from October 2007, and thanks to your videos, I’ve already replaced the oil pump with a new one manufactured in 2022. I also recently replaced the complete shock absorbers and the compressor, the latter because it was running constantly due to the worn-out air springs. I noticed that you monitor when the compressor starts and stops using your mobile phone. I’d really appreciate it if you could let me know which diagnostic tool you’re using in the video, so I can get one and keep an eye on my compressor to avoid it breaking down from constant use. Thanks a lot for your help, and I look forward to enjoying more of your videos. Best regards and a big hug!

The line kit with the new compressor is also used for converting from Hitachi models. The pressure sensor, really there should be two. One for gallery, one for reservoir. But there is a reason for one. Since filling the reservoir ONLY happens after front and rear valves to struts are closed (selected height reached) the reservoir pressure can be inferred. Also reservoir pressure is a lot higher than strut pressure, FYI. Also the main reason for the pressure sensor being in the gallery if because the compressor can not run unless pressure is below a certain value, this is because these tiny compressors can not physically start if the pressure is too high, they just don't have that initial startup strength to do so. This is why gallery pressure is dumped (compressor fart) after running and sometimes before starting when needed. So this is why gallery pressure drops, it needs to. So that is why the sensor is located where it is and why there is only one. Also a side advantage of the sensor being in the gallery and not the reservoir is if the reservoir or struts somehow leak back into the gallery when they should not this can be detected and cause a fault, "gallery pressure increasing when compressor not running".
