I just completed RedEyed Jack's sunroof leak and bedliner headliner customization. It looks great. I thought I'd share a few things I learned. The bushing mentioned, I found at Home Depot. It was "Everbilt Spacer #10 ID x 5/16 in OD x 1 in L". It was in the hardware section with the trays of lose nuts & bolts. I struggled to get the foam off of the headliner. I spent hours with a plastic scraper and alcohol. I didn't find a good solution other than time and muscle. I thought I cleaned it pretty well. Then I used Rust-Oleum spray-on bedliner. After three coats, it looked horrible. It highlighted all the little bits of foam residue. I then applied the Herculiner Bedliner using the roll-on kit. Two coats and it looked awesome. Definitely go with the roll-on to get the proper texture and hide any residual foam. I also had a tear in my headliner. Before I painted, I used Bondo to repair it and it seemed to work well and the roll-on texture covers it nicely. My sunroof had another small leak so I removed the sunroof and repaired it. It is easy to do with the headliner out. It just needed a bead of silicone. That fixed the issue. I left the headliner out for 1 week and the smell is minimal. And the noise level seems the same to me as has been stated many time. Thank RedEyed Jack for inventing this solution!

Thank you for the upload. I found it very helpful. My grandfather gave me his 2004 Discovery because I'm a poor college student but it had mushrooms growing in it from all the water coming through both sunroofs. I was unsure whether I would have the strength or skill to remove the headliner but it was easy. The idiots at Land Rover had glued the plastic corners into the metal sunroof gutter and all four corners leaked. With a friends help we removed the sunroof assembly and reinstalled the plastic corners plus replaced the rubber seal that mates with the glass when it is closed and voila!,no more leaks. I may use your idea of the bed liner as headliner but I need to think about it.

When you replaced the plastic corners, how did you glue them in place? I got some scotch weld 8005 epoxy but have not tried it yet. It looks like it is glued in place with silicone but is obviously leaking. Also you must have removed the metal pan and it appears you can only get to it with the headliner out.

Thanks for your video! I have a 2003 Disco and I was inspired enough by your video to do the same thing. My moonroof also leaked and the same piece of plastic was broken off in the same corner. I actually used the plastic cylinder of papermate pen that fit into the hole and went into the tube perfectly! I also used epoxy as you recommended. My headliner was stained with mold next to the low spot on the passenger door and was drooping down in a couple spots. Tore it off and used flat black paint as you did... turned out great. The only thing is the smell of the paint still lingers... Thank you again for your video!! Sam

I also fixed my leak, which was the roof rails/bars. They are sealed with a flimsy bit of neoprene and not very well glued in. I removed them and replaced the neoprene and sealed with black silicone sealant. With the roof liner off I was able to pump a fair bit into the recess where the roof bars connect. Worked. Took the headliner out today to do the bedliner finish. Not surprisingly, the sunroof drain broke off in the process. Dry rot no doubt since it's an '03 Disco. Pleased to see both of these tips in one video or I'd be lost. I'll try the hardware store fix tomorrow for the sunroof. Bed liner will be sprayed on afterwards simply because it's an option. Rolled on bedliner looks great though. Thanks for the video. Question: Did the bedliner chip, crack, or break after squeezing the headliner back into place through the cargo door?
@RedEyedJack8 жыл бұрын
the bedliner held up great putting it back in. No issues at all!!! I would have sprayed it as well if I could have. I was really worried about the finish looking rolled if you know what I mean. As for the drains, I epoxied all four drains just to be safe!!! And I also used clear silicone around the sunroof frame on the roof for extra protection. Hopefully I'll never have to do it again! Glad the video was helpful!!!

@RedEyedJack8 жыл бұрын
nerdy8675309 let me start at the beginning. Peel the headliner fabric off. Get a good heavy nylon scrub brush and scrub all the foam off of the headliner "board" for lack of a better word. Wipe it down with denatured alcohol. Roll on the bedliner. The bedliner is flexible so no worries about it cracking but I did wrinkle the headliner in the front passenger corner trying to reinstall it myself. Have some one give you a hand getting it back in. But no worries about it cracking. That bedliner is tough stuff. Plus if anything ever happens to it just touch it up with more bedliner, it will blend in super easy!!

Great video! Thanks for posting. Question: the headliner looked black after you removed all the foam, why didn't you leave it like that? Did it look bad plain without the bedliner?
@RedEyedJack5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the headliner looked like crap plain.

Awesome video I'm gonna start taking mine down tomorrow, do you need to remove the center plastic pillars where the seatbelt are attached to, and also do the front ones do they have to be removed down?
@RedEyedJack8 жыл бұрын
you have to remove everything. but the just pop off. do yourself a favor, Google "land rover discovery 2 rave manual" and download the service manual. Then follow it step by step. that's what I did and it tells you where every screw, clip, and snap are.

We’re there any issues with broken tabs... I’m about to pull my headliner... it would appear that I might have a leak not associated with the pan drains.

I did not have any issues with broken tabs. But i really took my time and was really careful.

I appreciate that. I’ve partially pulled it to check front roof motor, and I’ve actually had my headliner replaced. Seems that, after install, I have some leakage. It wasn’t a LR specific place so I’m thinking they might have been a little rough...

I was going to do a similar thing to my D1. Until i took the liner out and began painting it. Looked horrible not to mention the edges where the liner meets the sides did not look any good. Went to a fabric place and picked up some black material. Got some contact adhesive from bunnings and went to work. Each to there own i guess........

I'm not that familiar with the d1 headliner but on the d2 there is trim everywhere, no bare edges. I'm really happy how it turned out. I think it looks better than factory!

Use the denatured alcohol to get the glue off and you'll be amazed what is under there. First get the cloth off, then remove the little net pockets (small screws hold them in place). Then just take your time getting that yellow glue gunk off with the denatured alcohol and a cloth. Then you're off and ready to paint. I followed this exact process in the video and got SAME results. It looks amazing.

Best thing I can tell you is to download the RAVE manual off the net and follow step by step. I don't have rear air so it would not have helped you in that anyway. I just followed the service manual step by step

well done mate,thanks for the info,parts are expensive from l/Rover over in the UK,my roofs been leaking for years now its time to do something,just 2 q's 1,was your headliner foam base or fibre glass,mines foam 2,did you get it out and put it back on your own? 3.epoxy resin,which 1? it looks great,well done,thanks Mark,UK.
@RedEyedJack8 жыл бұрын
mark fairminer sorry for the late reply. my headliner is not fiberglass. I pulled the fabric off, scraped the foam off from under the fabric and the actual headliner seams like it's a paper based product. I did remove it and install it solo but I wrinkled the passager front corner doing so. wish I would have asked for help. the paint product I used was Rust-o-leum roll on bedliner.

truck bed liner paint. It is about $80 a gallon on amazon with the roller and a brush - and when dry has the appearance of textured cloth.

how long did it take to drop the headliner? Im thinking of dropping it in my 04 to run coax for cb whip on the tire carrier. Typing this I realized it might be easier to just use fishtape to run it up there lol
@RedEyedJack8 жыл бұрын
I don't think a fish tape will do it for you. there is tons of stuff to get hung up on. I downloaded the D2 service manual and just followed it step by step. I had it out in less than an hour. quick tip, fold your rear seats down and have someone give you a hand removing the headliner from the truck.
