Land Rover Discovery 2 TD5 Leaking Front Sunroof Fix Repair Headliner Removal Howto

The front sunroof on our Discovery 2 TD5 was leaking, water could be seen dripping through the sunroof handle as it's manual not electric but this video will apply to both. I suspected a broken plastic fitting or pipe issue e.g. blocked as it's a common fault on this vehicle, previous repairs had tried to fix the issue with a large helping of sealant on top however water managed to still get through, we decided to remove all traces of the sealant and also get the sunroof working again for the summer.
In order to fix this issue properly you should remove the headliner and sunroof and repair/replace any parts that need attention. Once the sunroof was removed everything was cleaned and fresh sealant applied, as water can get into the trim around the top of the sunroof (old foam/sealant perished) not just where the rubber seal is on the glass, we did also replace the rubber glass seal. I did also want to check the rear sunroof as well so the headliner needed to be completely removed. If you want to test the plumbing then you can pour some water at either side, for the front it should end up near the back of the wing/door and for the rear sunroof it will be near the lights area. We flushed the pipes with a large suction syringe, but some say you can use strimmer wire or compressed air whatever works best for you just be careful not to damage anything that's all.
This video shows you how to remove everything and which parts need replacing etc, when looking into doing this job I managed to find various bits of information but nothing complete so I hope this video shows you everything you would need to know so you too can do the job easily. You will need a socket set, screw drivers and ideally a trim remover for various studs/clips I have detailed sizing etc in the video.

This is my life every time it rains. The git who sold us the car lied about so much stuff wrong with the car. He taped up the sunroof and took the fuse out so we couldnt discover the leak, my husband took the tape off to see the damage... Going to attempt a repair job. Thanks for the vid

Has anybody worked out why the plastic tube/spigots actually break. I was wondering if it was successive build up frost which then blocks the tube and allows plug of ice form in that area and subsequent expansion breaks the tube. This problem with my Discovery 2s seems to occur in the winter when it has been standing for while at that time of year and not used. Not sure of a solution other than store it under cover ( garage etc) to prevent water getting into the channel under those conditions and building up ice in a slight thaw and refreeze cycle. I’m only guessing but this area shouldn’t be under any stress you’d think otherwise… unless there is some force somehow applied to the area when the sun roof is opened. Interesting mystery hope someone has definitively worked out the reason for this really tedious problem.

Great video guys! I'm having trouble with my disco 2 sun roof also. Did the top rubber seal fit the sunroof okay? I've seen some on forums that the seal pushes the back of the sun roof up and doesn't close properly.

The plastic pieces in the corners on my sunroof are still intact. Would going over the joints with sticafex stop the leaks?

How did you remove the interior trim around the sunroof? Does it just pull off?

Darn it... I'm having trouble getting the the interior apart, like the a- pillar wrap n lining. Y'all just skip these steps & voila you're done...it's getting frustrating!
