Love St. Helena and have many happy memories from visits in the 80s. Congratulations on completing the airport and hope it continues to thrive and be a wonderful asset for you.

Whew!! That's one busy control tower. 17 mins dealing with planes; the other 7hrs, 43 mins playing Yahtzee.

Now that’s a runway you don’t want to overshoot 😂

Too true my friend. Both ends have a 1000' (300m) drop down into the sea! I have driven the runway many times and was there to see the first ever flight land (before the airport was opened). It is spectacular and as one of the engineers who had a small part in putting the airside kit together, I can only marvel at the brilliant achievement of Basil Read in getting a runway even that long from an undulating elevated plateau.

will be great to start using planes that don't need to refuel will help to keep the cost down right now to expensive

Yep! It's "simple". Just extend the St. Helena Airport at about...1 kilometer...

If for any reason you cannot land there? 100 life's worth half of fuel tank?

Planes that dont refuel? What?
@TheSynecdoche4 жыл бұрын
@@AverageAlien What Adrian means is that bringing fuel to St Helena costs a lot more than tanking in Namibia of South Africa for both flights. Length of te runway is the limiting factor, however. For now it can't accommodate planes with sufficient range.

Proof once again that If you build it, they will come!!

It refuels so that if the weather changes at the last minute it is able to turn back to Namibia.

Depends where you fly from. It's around R12k from Cape Town, leaving at 19h15, overnight in Jhb to be ready for the 09h00 flight to St. Helena, landing at 13h15. Flights only on Saturdays (plus Tuesdays in season).

A220 has a better range can do the flight without refueling

Airbus A340-600 no it’s not London city’s airport operates a220s while having a shorter runway than Saint Helena has
@hi-wn4et4 жыл бұрын
Driven Junkie I know, I am just stating that the runway is sufficient enough to be able to land at st Helena without taking into the wind for consideration.
@Rassalhague24 жыл бұрын
I think a unrefueled round trip would be unsafe even for the A220.

Jesus it wasn't a landing. It was more a touchdown.
@josiaswattrelos5 жыл бұрын
The crew should to go to touchdown while avoiding strong windshear. Unique aircraft authorized to face this opposed team.
