I haven’t read Dreamcatcher but your description of it with the four friends coming together to destroy an evil force in a town reminds me of Floating Dragon. Have you read that? Some people don’t like but I always have. And have read it a handful of times like you with Dreamcatcher. I like most of Peter Straub’s books as well. You might like it if you haven’t read it.
