Looked high and low for a foot locker style trunk to store my daughter's dress up clothes. kzbin.infoUgkxRkkpE1_3gMEZ2mPhAt6b2moNCUXyH8tG I had one growing up that I stored my Barbies in and wanted something sturdy like that for her costumes. This arrived really, really quickly and is exactly what I've been looking for. Perfect size, color (pink) and has stood up for nearly a year so far against my kids using it as a chair, stage, and barricade (😬) to keep each other out of their rooms. I'm probably going to order another one for my daughter's Barbies.

Just finished restoring my mother's Lane cedar chest. Built Sept. 27, 1945, sold/bought in Baltimore, Maryland. A couple pointers. Her's was a medium brown mahogany veneer. The veneer on the top was damaged/gone, on one corner. One of the rear legs was broken and the piece missing. First, instead of a vibrating square/rectangular Sanders used a random, orbital, round sander with 220 grit to remove the old finish. Then repair major damage. As mine was mahogany I couldn't afford a 4'x2' piece of mahogany veneer or a block of mahogany for the leg. I decided to use wood filler to repair/level the damaged lid, then sand level. I carved a new leg based on the remaining leg, then installed and blended the repair. The waist trim molding was shot so I bought some 2 - 4' long x 1" wide carved oak trim. I took the lid and tray off the carcass. After sanding the carcass, again with 220 grit, I wiped it all off. I used Min-Wax dark mahogany Stain and Polyurethane (I prefer this because with wipe on stains you really have to be careful that the "overlap" doesn't show), stained the carcass (2 coats) the lid and skirt were painted semi-gloss white, the trim was also stained. I obtained the new "childproof" lock, free from Lane. It took some work to get the new lock to sit in the old locks' position (If you do this throw away the screws that come from Lane. These require a countersink in the metal or they become a snag/scratch hazard.) I ordered silicone bronze, pan head screws. Look better, no sharp edges. The lock hasp, in the lid, was a challenge. The old piece won't work with the new lock. If you take the small rectangular piece out of both hasps. Swap them and it works fine. When doing two different colors you definitely need to mask. If not, it's easy to get an unintended drip or spatter and ruin your work. Another way to treat the water damage is seal the lid with shellac. Use 0000 steel wool to break the gloss then use Stain and Polyurethane over.

Interesting fact about Lane Company cedar chest and other furniture that they made....the serial number read backwards is the date that the piece was made. An older piece, if it has the papers with it like Lane Cedar Chest do taped or stapled to the top on the inside top, increases the value up to $700. In original state, the value starts at around $400. Lane Company was in my area. My sister worked there. Very sad that it shut down. Thx NAFTA! I've been researching to see if they are made still but by another furniture factory. Btw, Lane Company was in Altavista, Va. I am in Danville, Va., 35 miles south. 😊

Tip for you: set your piece on paint/stain cans (under the body of the piece) so the feet are elevated off your table. Then it’s easier to paint the bottom of the legs without getting paint on the table. Great job on the chest. The color is beautiful.

With encountering "problems" during a project, I always ask myself two questions: 1) If not for those problems, would the time be (more or less) accurate? 2) When you come across this sort of problem again, will it take the same amount of (extra) time again? If you answer "yes" on 1, then this is simply learning time. Learning to take this into account with every job you take on, and maybe even recognize the more problematic ones and estimate your time on that. If you answer "yes" on 2, then again, it's time well spent. Next time, you can calculate some extra hours. Possibly even add 10 to 25% on each project concerning hours to be on the safe side. You can always give a small discount when the whole project went easier than thought. It's easier to give back a little than to try and ask for more.

Two things to try for water stains... you can use wood bleach (oxalic acid and water mixed to a paste) to even up the wood surface. Pre-stain conditioner is also a great product to apply to raw wood before staining to help ensure even coverage.
