Well English is here to stay. There is no point riling against it. It is the language of business and higher education and Indians have benefitted immensely from it. Hindi is another regional language like Kannada, Tamil or Assamese. India is a conglomeration of many linguistic sub-nations. It is highly IMMORAL on the part of central government to patronise Hindi at the cost of other Indian languages. The 107 point recommendation to which the Prez gave his nod seeks to make Hindi in effect the national language, atleast they are moving towards it. If central govt. does not revoke this then they are laying the seed for secession in this country. Hindi was introduced to Southern India only after Independence in 1947. Southern states are teaching Hindi for the sake of national unity. We don't see a similar effort to teach southern languages & other Indian languages in Hindi speaking states which was actually a quid pro quo mandated by the Kothari commission in 1968. It is IMMORAL that the onus of national integration should be placed squarely on the shoulders of non-Hindi speakers while Hindi speakers get a free-pass throughout India. If at all, all the languages mentioned under Schedule VIII of the constitution are equally national languages of India, no special place can or should be given to Hindi. This will be vehemently opposed in the South and other parts of India. I highly commend the sensible comments made by Mr. Ashok Vajpayee. For the same reasons, non-Hindi speaking Indians should also oppose efforts to make Hindi an official language at the United Nations.

There are more languages in North than there are in South India and the only reason why Hindi is being "PUSHED" is because a vast majority of Indians speak the language (irrespective of their caste, creed, region and sect). Even in freedom struggle you'll mention about Rani laxmi bai but you won't have a single detail on the Legendary V.O.C, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Pulikesi-II(There is movie on Pulikesi-23), Sepoy Mutiny at Vellore, Veerapandiya Kattabomman(Well! rings any bell? No? There is stamp out there and a movie also. Go get it). Have you ever heard of these people? but we learn about these people many times in Tamil text books provided to us by our state schools. Hindi is the language of 4-5 states; it cannot be imposed upon the rest of India. Rajendra Prasad is responsible for this situation. In the Constituent Assembly, he was the chairman. There was voting to decide what language should be the official language. English was elected by all. Then Sanskrit and Hindi were supported by an equal number of members. Then, Rajendra Prasad decided that Hindi should be chosen. Without Rajendra Prasad, Hindi could not be the official language. Sanskrit would be the official language. Sanskrit was not opposed by the South Indians or East Indians.

I know I have no business being here, but I’m a European (portuguese) citizen and I have lived and studied in various European states. Everyone I’ve come across speaks English to some degree and these days 100% of Europeans study English in school. It has not erased our culture and heritage, but has only allowed us to share that culture and make new friends from other cultures. Same thing will happen in the case of South India. A idea of separate country for South India is present since India got independence. These kind of stunts just increases the hatred and strengthens tha Anti North India attitude amongst South Indians. South India got nothing to loose, it's a developed region in every factor. The regional languages in south exist for so long and people have fought over language in South India. Just go to Tamil nadu and try to speak Tamil to a shop vendor and you can see pride in his eyes. As long as India remain one country, any other language cannot replace ‘English’ as official language. The national freedom movement relied largely upon English language in order to reach out to non-Hindi speaking areas which was 2/3 of India including Bangladesh and Pakistan before Independence. We cannot altogether stop using English as official language. British Rule has efficiently replaced Sanskrit and Urdu during their rule of more than 200 years in India. They have left India during 1947 Indian Independence but their legacy still being continued by way of Constitution of India, Parliamentary Democracy, Law and Justice, Administration, Defense and Space program, Research and other fields. Hindi is an under-developed mixer of Sanskrit,Urdu,Persian and other local dialects which cannot in anyway replace English.

Myself being a full fledged Hindi medium guy who got English as a professional language, a lover of premchand and prasad who works solely in English and loves it this way without assigning an elite lable to it, find no value in unnecessarily pushing Hindi down the throats of non-hindi population of India that can easily find simultaneously a national and international connect through English.

All Indian languages are important but Hindi was the language used in freedom struggle to unite everyone it got us freedom from the Britishers...whenever we meet a foreigner they will definitely greet us NAMASTE its not the same for every language....its not south vs north its about the popularity it has gained and numbers Hindi is 10 th most spoken language in the world

Hindi was used to unite Hindi speaking people only in the respective region. In other regions, people used their own language. There is no popularity associated with Hindi. It's due to population explosion only in Hindi speaking region. Moreover government just selected Hindi unilaterally and never asked the people to decide the official language. ( Nehru and rajindra Prasad brought it through back door ) So it's a dictatorship by ruling government in 1949 forcibly asking people to learn hindi without any official public referendum by 2/3 majority. Everything else is just nonsense . India has multiple nationalities by ethnic identity. So no single ethnic nationality can claim india as their country. That would be unfair and arrogant.

Hindi is NOT a national language. How about Punjabi, Kashmiri, Rajastani, Marati, Kannada, Telugu, Konkani, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali, Assamese, Manipuri, Tripuri ? So, with so many states speaking their local languages, how Hindi can be called Rashtra Bhasha ?? It is NOT !!!

I am from Tamil Nadu, I have listed few details how imposition of Hindi will affect Tamil, this is applicable for other regional language. Below I have provided explanation as to why the claim that Hindi is good for future survival of tamil culture and prosperity is a false propaganda by the Hindi belt politicians. Their agenda is to strength their political base in the south by imposing their language. In doing so, they will have a political future in the southern states at the expense of regional parties. Already we are losing the use of our language in several fields due to English, with Hindi there will not be any requirement of Tamil in the future. Let us imagine Tamil language is in a coffin. I will list the nails that has been slowly added by the Indian politician to that coffin since the British and Indian independence . 1. Children who study in English medium schools, science, geography, physics, chemistry, history, maths, biology, engineering all are taught in English. English being the world language it is good for our future survival. People who take tamil as secondary language in english medium, will be able to read and write tamil at basic level. They’ll not be creators in tamil as their language of thinking would be English. Their knowledge creation would only be in English. These people live in the cities who jump from one city to another for their economic prosperity and survival. 2. Children who study in tamil medium will have English as their secondary language and will be able to read/write English at basic level. These children live in secondary cities and villages. They find it difficult to pursue higher studies in science, geography, physics, chemistry, history, maths, biology in English when they join colleges. Forced to create new knowledge in English. To fix this the number of children in English medium in secondary cities and villages has increased in the last 50 years. With this increase, tamil in future will not be required to explain science, geography, physics, chemistry, history, maths, biology and would only be used for communication, basic reading and writing. If Hindi is going to be introduced, we don’t need tamil for communication, everyone would prefer Hindi after 3-5 generations. 3. In our society, Tamil is currently being used in religion, entertainment and literature (This will fade) with the growth of English and Hindi. Tamil literature will slowly decline as the number of reader move to English and Hindi. If there is no market for tamil literature there will no longer be any creative writing in it. Only copying and translation in the future. 4. No knowledge creation in tamil (i.e. scientific, technical paper, journal) in the following field science, geography, physics, chemistry, history, maths, biology, engineering. All scientific paper has to be published in English. Reference to knowledge is only available in English. 5. Administration will slowly move towards English/hindi. 6. High court in Tamil Nadu cannot use tamil language to interpret the law and provide judgement. Only English/hindi. Tamil vocabulary will not grow in this field of law. The requirement of tamil language has been reduced to the following field Communication, religion, entertainment and literature. This will also die in another few generation and would be replaced by other language English/Hindi. Tamil requirement in science, technology, business and law field has been slowly eroded because there is an easy replacement (i.e. english). The question is do we accept that status quo. If we accept it and continue then slowly the tamil language will loose it significance as it’s vocabulary will not grow in the above field and because of that their will not be any new literature and knowledge in tamil language in the coming generation. So it will be avoided by the coming generation for their survival. BJP/RSS peoples are spreading false message through news channel regarding the benefits of learning Hindi, when there is none. I agree the state politicians for their selfish gain has given away the state rights, which is hurting the public. Why should we burden our son/daughter to learn additional language in their childhood when its benefits are minimal in the future, it would be required only for socialising and entertainment. When we are paying taxes to the central government what has the central government done to promote the regional language so its usage can be strengthen in various fields. In high courts we can't use our language for arguments and judgement. There is a hidden agenda to reduce the use of regional language as official language so that usage of Hindi/English becomes the main language in trade, education, business and administration.

Killing the regional languages for the sake of one national language is not fair .Unity in diversity cannot achieve only by forcing Hindi on everyone . English is a global language which as good in India to connect different regions. In the North Hindi had killed most of the regional dialects , I am glad that South is holding their ground against this supreme Hindi and prefer their own mother tongue .Bravo to my Southies.

SORRY to narrow knowledge of Chetan. How Hindi become our mother Language? Hindi is mother language of north Indian but not for southern and NorthEast India....Hindi is proud language for them so is our language....

From what I have seen Sonia, people in TN kinda learn Hindi informally, through the movies, optional fun classes, talking to North Indians...and really there will always be some people who really do want to learn Hindi formally to the point it becomes their second language as was the case for two if my aunts...perhaps it is best to just leave things be...

People who don't speak English are never looked down upon. As a matter of fact, people who speak English are made fun of and treated differently due to all the rhetoric about English speakers sounding smoother. In South India, people feel comfortable to hang out with others who speak their local language and not English. Girls don't swoon at boys who speak English. To be fair, they're actually isolated. All this antagonism against English speakers only adds to all the unfair criticism people are already facing. I'm stunned to realize the mediocre English Chetan speaks taking into account his success as the best selling English author in India.
