The word "placenta", as a medical term, derives from the Greek plakoûta, accusative of plakous, name that was given in Greece to a rounded and flat cake. The root "plak", from the Indo-European, indicates a flat shape. In Latin placenta also had the meaning of a flat cake. (that's why we have cake for birthdays)

in some regards (a lot actually), yes they are similar. They are both Latin languages (even though Romanian has quite some Slavic influences). But there are some sentences that sound nothing like: for example in Romanian "Am fost la targ sa iau pepeni" means "I went to the market to get melons". In Italian I think this will sound quite different.

It would have been interesting if the Portuguese guy would have translated the "doi plus doi, fac patru" sentence into Portuguese, which would literally be "dois mais dois, faz quatro" (although we'd say "são" ("are") instead of "faz" ("makes") in this context. We also have a more archaic, so to speak, word in Portuguese that means "plus", which is "chus" (both coming from the Latin "plus"), but "mais" (coming from de Latin "magis"; from whence also Spanish "más") is much more used. I liked the video, I'm just sad that the guys didn't the many more obvious similarities/equalities between both languages... It would've been interesting to see them getting surprised by words or sentences which look alike or are exactly the same...

Me mudei para Itália a pouco tempo, pq minha mulher é italiana, e já cansei de escutar que eles não entendem o português, que parece russo e tal, eles praticamente simpatizam com o espanhol e chega. sendo que nem o espanhol eles entendem completamente, podem entender pq soam parecidos quando é falado porém o italiano na escrita é mais similar ao francês e romeno! Minha mulher estudou o português de Portugal fez Erasmus ai, e conheci ela no Erasmus 😂. Enfim... no início nos comunicavamos em inglês, depois ela com o português de Portugal e eu com o português carioca 😂e agora aprendi o italiano mas nem por isso eu critico a língua deles e falo que eles falam alto e cantando sempre, para mim o português de Portugal não parece russo, houve um momento em que tentaram imitar o sotaque francês mas fora isso o português é português e ponto! Amo o seu povo e cultura independente de qualquer coisa e não gosto de comentários que debocham de uma língua ou falam com cara de nojo é muito chato.

Interesting how Portuguese people seem a lot more intoverted compared to their Brazilean counterparts. Normally, people assume Latin culture to be an extroverted one, but Portuguese people, as well as French people, defy all that. Portuguese people come off as more laid back, chill, mellow, melancholic, modest and not one to start bragging about their accolades or start unnecessary drama. Guess it must really just be a Mediterranean thing, because Northern Italians from the Alps, Northern Spanish from the Atlantic coast, and most of the French, except from the South who are by the Mediterranean, tend to have more rational and reserved temperament. They are not as boisterous and explosive as Mediterrenean people. Take for instance Greece. It ain't a Latin country, but their temperament is very similar to the stereotypical hot-blooded passionate Latin temperament. As for Romanian, idk much about them, but they come off as very Slavic in terms of temperament. Idk, it's just an ignorant assumption I am making.

People from Portugal can speak a very good English. I had observed that already, but every time I listen to a Portuguese speaking English, I get impressed. It seems their native language provides a good starting point to speak a foreign language. Actually, it seems it has more to do with their accent. Brazilians can't speak English that well.

Plăcintă comes from the Latin placenta, so the Portuguese guy has a good point. It also means the same thing: pie. But the modern use of the Latin word is restricted the the medical/ anatomic meaning of placenta and they obviously don't know that.

Suggestion: first find out which words that are similar between the two languages your playing with. Second, put these words in a bowl and randomly have each contestant draw one. Let them say it in their native language and have the other person guess it. This type of challenge is more interesting to see on video..

A long time ago I landed in a Romanian internet channel that was showing a rugby game that I wanted to watch, I did not knew it was a Romanian channel and for 80 minutes I seat there watching the game I finding really really really strange, because I could understand 50% of what they were saying, and could not understand at all the other 50%, but the strange thing was that the 50% I could understand it was almost as if someone from my country was speaking (I'm from Brazil), it was crystal clear Portuguese, and the other 50% was an alien language, very very strange, after that I learned that Romanian was like a Portuguese guy married a German/Russian girl and they taught half the words each to their child, it's really a crazy experience if you speak Portuguese to listen to Romanian.

In Latin, "shadow" is "umbra" ... In Portuguese, besides the word "guarda-chuva" we also have the word "sombrinha" (small shadow) that obviously comes from "sombra" (shadow). So, Umbra (shadow in latin) > Sombra (shadow in portuguese) > Sombrinha (umbrella in portuguese). In spanish says Sombrilla.

I am a Brazillian, Romanian is harder to understand then french, italian and spanish. I guess is more similar to Italian than the other latin languages. A Brazillian can speak with a spanish, but romanian is almost incomprehensible to a portuguese speaker.

I think most of portuguese speakers thought about "placenta" instead of pie. In Brazil we don't usually have that kind of traditional american-based pie.

Although Romanian is part of the Latin languages group, we don't hear about this language as often as we hear of: Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian. I wonder why...!? But that was a cool video though. I wish I could bring together one native from each of these countries just to have a "Latin Meeting". By the way, I'm from Brazil and I once met a group of Romanians. They could read Brazilian Portuguese well enough. 😜🕺🏽🇧🇷

I am Portuguese and enjoyed this video. I have a very hard time understanding fully the Romanian language however, I have some Romanian Facebook friends. When they post things in Romanian language with writing, I can read and make sense out of it. Amazing !

Pie = Bolo. Tart = Torta. Pie is not Tart, not even in Portuguese. But there we go, it depends on Portuguese from WHERE in Portugal we are talking about. If we compare North portuguese with South Portuguese, oooh damn there is a lot of differences. I know Romanian learn Portuguese really fast!

Good video!!! The Portuguese guy , when he pronounces maşină sounds like a cousin of mine which has a pitch voice. We share a lot of sounds ʃ ʒ ɨ ɐ. Beau vin/ bebo vinho, duh!! No translation needed sometimes. We only need more exposure between our languages.
