I am a hyperpolyglot gigachad alpha male who speaks over 50 languages fluently. In this video, I discuss why I quit Russian and Arabic. This is a hard video to make, but it is important that aspiring polyglots understand my struggle.

Salute from Palestine:) Loved this video. I've been (lazily) learning Russian for years, and pretty sure will never be able to speak it, but I enjoy it a lot. Just getting to the point of being able to read and understand a third of what's written feels good enough, and I learn a bit of different Latin languages every day (and mostly upping my Spanish to B2). I also work as a translator and planning soon to open a language canter (English and Arabic). I'd love to help you in Palestinian Arabic if you'd like, I think I'm pretty good at explaining things logically, and not just in languages. Keep up the good work:)

I love your work. Terrific videos, man! Regarding amblyopia with exophoria (lazy eye drifting out). Without treatment, the problem will only get worse, more frustrating, annoying, and aggravating, with time. That's not your fault. It's the simple nature of the problem. The point is, the sooner you get treatment, the sooner you will thank yourself. Your fear of surgery is natural and understandable. Our eyes are special. However, I'm afraid you're overthinking it. This is one of the safest procedures you will ever have. And for you, one of the most important in improving your quality of life. The problem is that, because the brain is not receiving enough good information from the amblyopic right eye, it tends to ignore it, and the lateral rectus muscle tends to pull the eye off to the side. The procedure recesses and weakens the lateral rectus muscle, and shortens and strengthens the opposing medial rectus muscle, so you don't have to fight so hard to keep the right eye straight. It's not a cure, but it helps. A lot. Find someone who has done many many of these procedures, then put your faith in that person's experience and skills. Faith is something our current culture has led us to avoid. However, in this situation beyond your control, use faith as your tool to get through this. Replace the focus on risks and fears, by visualizing instead a better life after you've had this done. You are an incredibly strong person. Look at everything you have accompllished with languages, which are hard. You can succeed at this, too. Best wishes.

Besides, Arabic is not even close to being a pretty language, why would someone fėrce oneself to learn it is beyond me, it only has a few pretty words - and Russian is not that bæd, but it’s kinda meh, and Slovene is way better because Slovene is the prettiest Slavic language with mostly pretty words and only a few non-pretty words that can easily be modified and turned into a pretty word, so one should be learning Slovene instead, which is way easier and very pretty with mostly pretty words that bring joy to the eye!

Dutch and English are the prettiest and most refined languages ever with the most pretty and poetic words, and Norwegian and Icelandic and Danish and Old Norse and Welsh and Breton also come real close, and all other Germanic languages and the other 4 Celtic languages are also super gorgeous - if one wants to learn a harder language, Irish and Scottish Gaelic are a great option because they are very pretty with mostly pretty words and they are the hardest pretty languages, so they are very challenging because of the spelling with many vowels and diphthongs etc, but still not impossible, and they are category 3 languages!

Some of the prettiest Welsh words are derwen / nest / afon / talar / adeilad / helygen / afal / hyd / lolfa / enaid / bedwen / neithiwr / ynys / nos / sydd / noswaith / ers / mynd / rhosyn / eistedd / gwych / tân / fawr / telyn or delyn / ynddyn / llaw or dwylo / doeth / fewn or mewn / gwar / bys / ffynnon / swrn / tew / blin / mynydd / braich etc, and Welsh reminds of Dutch (Dutch / English / Norwegian are the prettiest and most refined languages ever with the most pretty words) because they have a similar intonation / vibe and they both have the soft CH (H-like K-controlled) sound and many of the words have similar types of letter combinations - Welsh is a category 1 language, and Breton / Cornish are also category 1 languages, just like Dutch and English and Norwegian etc, so they are very easy to learn, and have mostly pretty words, and I am beginner level in Welsh and in the other 5 Celtic languages!

I have a friend who does not write (though reads a tiny bit of French) and speaks ten languages. (In Africa many speak a half dozen to a dozen languages, yet they grew up without education and cannot read nor write, or they read a little bit and do not write.) Audial learning is the way of the ancients. As someone with similar vision challenges in a world with maps without contrast or ability to enlarge text, I feel you! Just found you shockingly, you are hilarious.

That is very different though if you're referring to sub-Saharan languages, bantu languages are all extremely closely related, if you were to learn Zulu for example, then travel north and try to communicate with the Shona, there would be a few differences but you would be able to understand eachother pretty easily without any prior education on or exposure to eachother's language. Most of the bantu expansion into southern Africa was actually a lot more recent than most people think and so the languages tend to be much more recently removed from eachother, like Dutch and Afrikaans now, or Dutch and English 2000 years ago.

But my native language is still hard to me 😂 Literally everyday I learn new words and stuff in my own language. As an artist with a bad wrist, I feel like I can relate. While I can draw fine for the most part, for longer periods of time, either in one go or even a little bit every day for long periods, can be painful for me. It sucks since it's something I love and am passionate about, but I have to weigh my passion against my long term health. I don't want to make things worse by over-exerting myself. Audio is definitely still an option for your language learning, definitely take advantage of that. And if you go for the surgery, I hope it all goes well and you heal up quickly. (Just make sure to REALLY rest as you recover. Patience can be awful sometimes, but it pays off!) Wishing you the best!

Why don't just read Russian/Arabic via Latin transcriptors? I mean if L.Simp has no issue reading languages with Latin alphabets then transcripting software is an obvious solution. I'm pretty sure that there is a ton of apps/scripts/websites/chatbots that can provide this service already. Ffs, in the worst case scenario you can just switch to another language. I mean Polish is just Russian written in Latin and Maltese is the same thing just for Arabic.

5:58 I think you completely mixed up Russian cases. Anyway, I think your decision to learn Russian by audio is a good one. Also is good to immerse in a culture of the language you are learning, best is to live in that country. I was learning German in the school since the 4th grade and by the 11th grade i still couldn't understand a thing. But after I moved from Russia to Germany I learnt this language in a couple of months to a very moderate level where I could freely express myself. Also a good method is to learn by listening to music, trying to understand it (with the help of vocabulary etc) and then trying to sing it.

I'm a native Arabic speaker, and I can tell you that, honestly, you almost get the perfect alphabet sounds. Way to go! It's really rare to hear a non-native speaker sound that close to Arabic, so I bet you will become a great Arabic learner with more speaking and listening practice. So you don't need to read this period, you can just listening to podcasts and speaking to native Arabic people, and trust me, you will level up insanely way so fast! I also have a lazy eye, but my doctor said that it is untherapable. The surgery can only fix the eye movement so the lazy eye doesn't move away on its own (forgive me, I don't know how to describe that), which means only the way others see your eyes but not the way you see with your eyes. Furthermore, unfortunately, you have to do the surgery again after a while because your eye will go back to looking like before again. Wish you all the best 🌟

Honestly, this hit me so hard. Running straight into a wall of health limitations can feel fucking heartbreaking sometimes. But honestly, you already have gotten to the right mindset to get you through it: the wall doesn't go on forever, just find another way around. Learning braille and focusing on audio content is fantastic. I think the Discord could pull through on other things that may be easier on your eyes for production: like meme reviews, maybe non-American music suggestions for you to give reactions to, and cartoons/children's programming could also be interesting to compare across languages and easier on the eyes.

Привет из России! In Russia, we have a saying "Не было бы счастья, да несчастье помогло" with the closest equivalent in English being "blessing in disguise". I believe this saying exactly describes you switching over to studying through listening. For me this was a mind-blowing revelation when I was studying English. One day I just quit studying and switched to listening all the time. I started from simple (but entertaining) audio books for teenagers and eventually worked up to scientific literature and podcasts. And all of this was pure fun! Surprisingly, listening a lot has greatly improved my ability to write and speak too. These days I just feel when I write or say something wrong. Listening instead of reading and writing must be especially beneficial for someone studying Russian, since the language has seemingly boundless set of rules. The truth is, you shouldn't study them formally. Just listen and absorb them, your brain will do the rest. The "Bald and bankrupt" guy actually says the same.

Bald and bankrupt has spent a lot of time in Russia but his Russian is pretty sloppy.

@@ispejonas well, perhaps this is because he's using the language just enough for simple everyday interactions so he could keep making hid videos. He doesn't have a job or family in Russia, so no pressure to get better at it. Also, he's not leaving impression of someone listening Russian audio books either :)

Vocabulary, vocabulary, vocabulary, the grammar is hardcore. Like bald says vocab first couple years. It takes truly being in country to work those finer nuances mostly. Or of course everyday use of the language

Just like you said, languages are a distraction. I have been going through difficult times for the last couple of years and studying languages have been a new found hope for me and sometimes feel a little overwhelmed by it, but again, it's supposed to be fun. You may feel a certain pressure to learn more and more since you have a successful KZbin channel but I think you sharing this is even better because it shows you have limits just as everyone else does. Even that American guy who speaks native-like Japanese took a time off and that boosted his knowledge with time. It will get sorted out, keep it up. Ps. You crack me up and I learn a lot here

My ex got the surgery and she was coooooked for abt 2 days. Basically just gotta put these lil eye drops in every few hours for a week or so. After about 3-4 days she could take off the eyepatch and see just v blurry, then about a week everything was good and it helped a ton with her migraines. It did end up meaning a new glasses prescription down the line but overall seemed v worth it. It’s also worth mentioning ts was outrageously expensive.

I am Russian and I truly respect and admire people who managed to learn Russian. I was looking at my husband making an attempt to learn Russian (he is Cypriot) and was wondering how it was difficult for an adult to learn all that plus countless exceptions. My husband quit on cases))) you are a beast! Keep going. Дорогу осилит идущий!

I resonate with your problem on a whole another level, man. I’m half-Bulgarian and half-Palestinian and can barely speak Arabic, but try to speak as much as I can. I also have a lazy eye and that was a problem with me reading books when I was little. There was the pain which you explained, but I never even thought it affected me so much with reading and focusing. I now speak German as well, but man is it hard to concentrate! No worries LanguageSimp, you are not alone.
