Genuinely one of my favorite scenes of the series. Episode 18’s big moment was awesome, but I feel like this one doesn’t get enough credit. This scene of feeling emotionally overwhelmed but putting on a brave face until you finally show your vulnerability to someone you trust feels very human and grounded in reality. Whether you’ve seen this series or not, I find this scene to be very relatable and it hits home.

The translation’s a little... The words “know” and “understand” in English have different, yet somewhat overlapping meanings. “Know” is more common because it is a smaller word. But “understanding” is a nicer word because it sends a message of feeling and of familiarity. “Know” is more cold, more calculating. In Japanese, the same thing is true but flipped. “Wakaru” is more common than “shitteru”. “Wakaru” is used for general understanding, especially subconscious situations, which are overall more situations. “Shitteru” is knowledge-based, and it is linked with the complete or near-complete knowledge, or perceived knowledge, of something. In this case, Emilia doesn’t say 「知ってる」, but she says 「分かる」. Emilia doesn’t know the feeling, how it feels, or what kind of feeling Subaru has. But she understands that he’s different and hurt by something. Should they have translated with “understand”? Yes. We too should also probably use “understand” more than “know”. But, then again, it’s such an unnecessary long word, huh? European languages have sadly lengthened and shortened the wrong words. And I doubt there’s some possible abbreviation for “understanding” that will follow English rules and make it better than “know”, at the same time. “Know” is such a small word...

Part of what is beautiful about this scene is how much Emilia and Subaru empathize with each other despite not knowing each other. Subaru doesn't understand that Emilia is so gentle and kind because of everything she has been through, he loves her because she is gentle and kind. Emilia has no idea that Subaru has met her and gone through these days with her a few times already, to her Subaru is just a foreigner who tried to save her and then started trying too hard at being a servant. She doesn't know what's happening to him but she knows he is in a lot of pain, and that is enough.

It's crazy because by Emilia's perspective, this is all the ramblings of a mad man. She has every right to be unnerved by the incoherent sentences she is hearing, but she can tell he's genuine. Whether by her own overwhelming sympathy or innate senses as an elf or just the time spent getting to know him in the last few days, she can tell that he's true to his heart and needed this release from the things wracking his brain. That smile of hers has no idea that those tears were woven through an entire month of madness and torture of the likes she couldn't even imagine. And at the same time, she at least knows he needs this and she gives him the pillow all the same. Love it

The buildup towards this scene is definitely what makes this scene so heart wrenching. The desperation for acceptance is something a majority of us as people want but in the end, it only takes a toll on us that leads us to forget who we really are. Just these few words "are you okay?" breaks their character and sets them free from the shackles of facades they had to put on for months or even years. Whoever you are dont be afraid to be YOU for the better; If theres something you need to change in order for a positive impact in your life then take the time you need and do it, but it doesn't mean you need to go out of your way to harm yourself and put so much stress on your mind and body that you eventually lose in touch with yourself for other peoples acceptance. Focus on bettering yourself rather than chasing to satisfy others, people that will accept you for who you really are, will be there in the end.

The raw emotion that comes from subaru is so damn good in this scene, even though he can't tell anyone what he's been through it's a great moment of release, from everything subaru has done all the deaths he endured and the truth he has tried to find, to finally be able to let the pain out is only one of the few moments subaru can actually feel somewhat normal in a world he was thrown into.

Funny how this scene happens because Emilia wanted to let Subaru be vulnerable and stop putting on a tough front around her, which ultimately helps him going forward right until Season 2. He gets punched by Otto and reprimanded for doing the exact same thing he was doing with Emilia in the mansion, and this helps him snap out because he finally sees that relying on others is necessary and that he shouldn't pretend like he's got everything under control.

I like both Rem and Emilia and I'm pretty much aware that Rem had much screen time than Emilia(at least for season one) . But no matter what I would still choose Emilia × Subaru over Rem × Subaru. Whenever I watch clips like this I feel like Emilia and Subaru connected with each other somehow. Like they were meant to be together. Scenes like this are why I'm not surprised Subaru chose Emelia over Rem. Emelia has been the nicest person to him out of anyone else ever since he joined this world. She's trusted him, supported him, and literally been his shoulder to cry on (well, lap in this case). Rem is awesome, but I don't blame Subaru for not choosing her.

I won't say that I don't feel or don't understand his pain and suffering and that I don't try to hide my emotions and struggles in life, because that's how I feel at this moment right now and the reason I pretend to be okay and happy is because I don't want others to worry about me. But I know it's okay to asked for help and to admit that you need help and that your hurting. I'm not afraid of dying, but I'm afraid of watching those I care about die in front of me. I'm afraid of letting them down and not being able to help them. I try really hard to be useful and helpful, because I care more about others then myself, and because I never tried to do anything at all back then too. These days I try to help people as best as I can, because I don't want them to suffer and go through what I went through in life. I'm hoping things will get better soon. I feel like a lot of people can relate to this scene. This is a great anime but I have a hard time re watching it again. I've only seen it once. I don't know what it's like to die because I'm not immortal to be honest and I don't dream of being immortal lol. But I do have a lot of bad traumas plus I have Anxiety and PTSD. But that's why I go to therapy and it does help. I hope everyone's doing okay and remember you're not alone. 🌹

Man it annoys me that people don't seem to understand that Emilia was there for and with him from the start. Like Rem is amazing, but Emilia was literally Subaru's reason to keep pushing forward at the beginning. Hopefully people will understand that better with season 2.

I come back to this scene everytime I get the feeling that no matter what I do to please people, and how much I do it, it's never going to be enough and so I stop. It hurts, it really does, especially knowing there will be consequences to be faced. I cry or tear up watching this scene because I think it has an element in life that I'm missing. Who knows when I'll be able to find that element or if I do whether it'll be able to heal a massive wound. For now, all I have and know is this scene.

Rem may love Subaru, be loyal, be kind and be cuter, and more interesting than Emilia, but she only started acting good towards him after knowing him, before that she killed him twice. Emilia on the other hand has always been kind towards him (towards everyone really), even before knowing him. Sure, they have had some discussions bc Subaru puts her on a pedestal and Emilia doesn’t value herself that much. In the end, most people prefer Rem, and I don’t blame them (she’s definitely top tier waifu), but I’m just team Emilia

@@rage_2000 Never said it was better or worse, just wanted to provide some context. We see the story from Subaru's POV only, so we are kinda sympathizing with him as a given, while possibly ignoring potential motives from any other characters. After what Rem has been through in her childhood, its quite understandable why she reacted so extremely towards him in that particular loop. Imagine this: Here comes this guy, completely out of nowhere. He acts weird, stays for a couple of days and leaves while stealing a kitchen knife and camps very near the mansion while obviously waiting for something. Combine that with the fact that he has been branded by the Witch (which she can smell on him) makes for a nasty combination, at least from an outsider's perspective
