THEIR. OWN. FAULT. Had a few very qualified buddies of mine apply. They had college degrees, no criminal history. One was denied for "being deceptive" on the polygraph test. That's the problem with the polygraph, it's a flawed system that could easily give false positives or could be cheated easily. They're not admissible in court. I worked for the LAPD in the 90’s. We had about 6,500 officers back then and yet the public was told 9,000. The problem about staffing that was not brought up in this video is this: first off, bring a police officer in LA has become political. You bow down to a weak command staff that only cares about stats and data. Then you have a DA that will turn felonies into misdemeanors. Let’s talk staffing now: we used to loose around 100-150 officers a month and we would replace maybe half of those numbers. Factor in firings, suspensions, injured on the job/ medical issues, retirements and people quitting. Hiring 100 new officers you would need at least 3,000 to 4,000 people if not more. Some people fail the written, the oral, the medical, the psych, background check and then you have to pass the 7 month police academy. Staffing LAPD has always been a problem. It’s worse now because the police are their own worst enemies, they no longer value community based policing and they hire morons now. You also have a society that does not want to serve its community. I can go on but that’s my two cents!
@normp3273
@normp3273 4 ай бұрын
Well reasoned, very logical and pragmatic analysis based on experience as it pertains to staffing. I work around a lot of 20-somethings. In my conversations with them the feedback I get is working as a policeman or firefighter is no longer viewed as an honorable profession. There is a social divide here. Members of the family have had negative interactions with police when they were young and that resentment carried into their adult lives. Most of them want to be professional video game streamers or social media influencers. Who can blame them? There's a lot of money to be made in that field if you can catch on. I fear police departments will lower their hiring standards and we will really have a front row seat at the circus.

@@normp3273 How much lower can the standards be lowered? Most departments don't even have a physical fitness requirement and it takes more schooling to become a hairdresser than a police officer. The standards are higher to be a security guard than a cop, and they do the same job, often unarmed, for a third the pay rate.
@kommisar.
@kommisar. 4 ай бұрын
@@APackOfHungryGhosts From what I have gathered with departments like the LAPD, these recruitment problems are largely the result of a decades-long vicious cycle, where the local DA's and court systems do far too little to punish criminals, which in turn not only worsens crime, but lowers the morale of the cops. The great power of the police unions play a huge factor here, thus why all these cops are able to receive far too few consequences for either being bad at their jobs or poor or even criminal behavior. Now you have worse crime and worse police officers. The various communities notice this, and they now distrust the police and don't like them. The politicians notice this, so they jump on the bandwagon to pander to their voting base and vilify the police departments, but they also don't want the ire of the police unions, so they often they will try to play both sides of the field. All this in turn makes fewer people want to be police officers and the good cops have less desire to keep working in the department. So now you have a giant mess of more crime and negative public attitudes towards the police, which in turn results in cops quitting and fewer recruits. To combat this, the police department has to lower its standards, which then results in worse police, which results in even more negative public attitudes towards the police. This is something LA has been fostering for decades now, which got really bad in the 90's with the Rodney King and following riots, and they haven't done anything to fix it since, all because the politicians there don't want to enact sensible laws regarding crime and keep the union's power in check.

Today, not so much and clearly for many of those reasons you stated. Clean your barrels of bad apples, and you could afford to hire more and better train police officers. The city of Los Angeles has seen significant legal settlements related to law enforcement behavior. For instance, it paid $300,000 in a lawsuit against a local journalist and a technology watchdog group. In another case, the city agreed to pay nearly $6 million to a group of police officers over a secret traffic ticket quota system, bringing the total amount spent on payouts and legal fees from these cases to over $10 million. Furthermore, the county Board of Supervisors approved nearly $50 million in settlements due to allegations of misconduct or excessive force by sheriff’s deputies. I would not work for an agency where there is not systemic support for the profession of policing that requires a lawful and just professional police officer. You could have the best chief but if the DA, city/government, and the citizens don't support the job you are doing then the officer is bound to fail in almost all aspects of police work.

There was a time I wanted to be an officer, but at some point I began to see how much it really takes to become one. Then I began to see how thankless the job is now. Who wants a job where almost everywhere you go, you are seen more as an enemy than a protector. For our current officers, I see how hard they work, and even then the city and most people just don't have their back. It has become a depressing profession.

Does LAPD still require white male applicants to score higher on the applicant testing than females or applicants of color? Their Affirmative Action quota used to be one of the toughest on white males in the country. LA police were never helping in the first place. No one on the planet has ever heard of an LA policer helping someone. Police officers need to be held to the highest standards, in order to be trusted. As in; police officers shouldn't be allowed to break any laws... Not even jaywalking. They shouldn't get any immunity from the law either. If you do your job correctly, then people will be saved and the least amount of people will have gotten hurt. That's your immunity. Although I believe police in America are underpaid and deserve a- near 6 figure salary, they have to gain the peoples trust first.

LAPD was once a coveted career, but not anymore. One huge problem is the fact that even though it is still one of the highest paid law enforcement jobs, that does not mean it affords you the ability to live in LA. LA cost of living has far outpaced LAPD salary. Also, LAPD's retirement and sick leave policy are not attractive to GenZ, and neither is police work in general. GenZ is an entirely different creature. They are looking for maximum income from the least amount of time and effort. They are also willing to take less pay as long as they can work only the days and amount of hours they want. GenZ does not want to be a slave to a schedule and/or time card. PRN work is their work preference. Now add in the fact that law enforcement is a damned if you do and damned if you don't job. The public and the press will bash you for doing your job and also rip you for standing back and doing nothing. No one wants to work in a job where you are constantly scrutinized and bashed.
