This may be a glimpse into SiS(and in broad definition, VIA aswell since they are pretty similar)'s downfall: Losing ground in their exceled territory(motherboard chipset and whatnot), should already fold or be bought out already. Instead of doing so, or try to transition, they came up with the bottom-of-the-barrel crap in order to cling onto whats left, or acquire half-dead companies(like VIA with Cyrix), then proceed to make it more dead-er. SiS is now a comically small shadow of its former self, their biggest revenue as an IC design house is literally the stock dividend from UMC since SiS did created UMC in some way. VIA fared better because they had the x86 license from Cyrix/Centaur, which they license it again to China so the Chinese could make their x86 CPUs--which means some of their earliest CPUs from mid-2010s were just refreshed VIA Isaiah/Centaur C7)

I had this, the K70IC and the X5DAF. You couldn't do jack with a K50C. The K70IC was the top machine, having a MXM removable GT220M (at least that's what it said on the front) and the X5DAF had a HD4570. Both of the last two were usable compared to the failure that was the K50C. I finally had managed to sell the K50C somewhere around 2 years ago, although at that point it wasn't a K50C anymore - I had swapped a K50IN mobo inside it plus the heatsink from a broken X5DAF, along with a C2D P8700, a 240GB SSD and 2x2GB DDR2 800. Got me a good buck at the time.

The 672MX is essentially a rebranded SiS 315 from 2001 which itself was a low-end chip at the time. 672MX is actually slower, but has DirectX 9 support. The reason it's in these laptops because it cost pennies, even compared to the Intel GMA 900. Even with dual channel memory, this chip would most likely not benefit from it as the single channel DDR2 kinda already maxes it out.

Heads up, Far Cry is not running at the lowest settings in the video. The vegetation quality setting is most likely set to "custom", you can confirm this in the settings menu. The only way to reduce vegetation to low (which removes all grass) is to delete one of the (for some reason) two system.cfg files and then running the configuration tool, setting all the settings and then running the game. This must be done every time before running the game or the vegetation setting will revert to "custom".

Was going to say, as a poor gamer at the time who's integrated chip wouldn't even display some textures completely, I remember having to do this.

Asus has some 2011-2013 server motherboards with integrated XGI Volari gpus. I am assuming that a SiS/XGI truck crashed near Asus headquarters, or maybe there was some weird Taiwanese tax incentive for using mostly Taiwanese sourced parts.

ok, so, my mom got a laptop with this iGPU paired with a Pentium T3400... so that's how it'll perform in gaming and day to day tasks once I finish doing my job of fixing it... it's also got 4GB of RAM in dual channel btw, and was built by a brazilian tech company that's famous for being horrible... now I'm even more curious to see how bad this is
@marksmith956611 ай бұрын
I have a worse candidate: ASUS 15.6 with C60 AMD cpu and originally had 3 GB memory. I figured adding 3 GB memory would help; but no it did reduce the hard disk thrashing, but running Windows 10 is a stretch. The biggest problem is graphics: The Radeon software stopped updating a decade ago. Still using it but take it to library for updates which load slowly.

one nice thing about this laptop, the battery cover is seperate from the battery, you can take the battery out and not have a gaping hole, but it's not internal.and opening the laptop seems pretty easy

reminds me of my old locally made laptop, the brand was axioo, a local indonesian laptop brand still open today making some actually pretty competitive machines for their price. anyways, it had a core 2 duo t4800 (kinda forgot) and the sis mirage. as a young kid i havent found out about pirating games so i played (an admittedly pirated phyiscal disc copy) nfsu1 on it, was perfect for it. i even used it with its broken space key where i mapped the space key to the left alt and its screen which glitches out intensely when opened more than 45 degrees, used it for doing assignments during very early covid times. i miss it, i still have it but its dead as the fan locked up. luckily i realized early and turned it off right away. currently saving up money to revive it and even do some upgrades such as ram and cpu and maybe even new battery, keyboard and ssd. if i get to the point of fixing it up, i will finally try linux for the first time.

I have the Asus K50IJ model. Looks a bit nicer but has an actual Intel chipset. With that said it doesnt perform much better, even with an SSD installed. The thing thats worse on the K50IJ model over the K50C model (yes there is a downside) is that 1 stick of RAM is soldered to the motherboard, leaving just 1 DDR2 SODIMM slot open for expansion. The good thing is that it is 2GB but if it decides to crap out then the whole laptop is just an oversized paperweight. Needless to say i do like it for nostalgia reasons, was one of the first decent laptops i owned. Great video explaining how much of a shitshow the K50C was.

I remember having an asus EEE-pc as my only accessible computer and I used to spend hundreds of hours playing 8fps minecraft on it when I was 10. The most playable game I had on there was zdoom. It couldn't run GZdoom because that required a version of OpenGL that this SiS chip didn't support. Absolute potato but it made me respect any pc.

This reminds me quite a bit of my Acer Aspire 5532-5535, a laptop that would have filled a similar niche in around 2010. It was similarly priced to netbooks and had similar performance to them too. It by all means was quite a bit better than this Asus machine, as it had a fairly decent GPU, 3GB RAM, and had (to my memory) an upgradable CPU. Like this machine, it was targeting the same crowd shopping for netbooks, it was basically just a bigger netbook.

At least there aren't artifacts in Halo unlike with their old 315 (mirage 3 really seems to be the same core, with the bare minimum needed for DX9 compliance). I saw better performance than you when I played Halo 1 (gaming set to safe mode) on my old PC with the Celeron D 320 and what would have been the Mirage (SiS 661FX/GX).

Now that you installed windows 7 64bit??? I wonder if things change under a custom light modified windows 8.1 64bit Did you try changing unreal tournament 1 backend rendering from directX to OpenGl ? Windows XP limits OpenGL to version 1.4, things might run better with access to OpenGl 2.0 If you have 64bit you can still game somehow~ I wouldn't go far as tell you try gamecube 2D games emulation under openGL but You can run emulators like flycast, Elsemi model 2 emulator or indie games like Peglin, star of providence, Hotline miami, Luftrausers (this one requires OpenGl 2.1 tho~)
