Holy crap! They sound awesome on this song, which is one of my favorites off of El Dorado. This was a time where they could reproduce their sound live with more raw production in the studio. People forget that they were also a great live band!

Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. It sounds like 4/4 in a major key although I don’t have sheet music and I’m too lazy to search the Internet since it’s 5:30 AM. But it’s a very strange song for ELO although, after watching a few songs for them on this channel, they seem to mix it up. Someone else mentioned it’s a “Blues song” and I’d agree as it sounds like it has a Blues progression. I do think that ELO, even though they were really popular in the 70s and early 80s I think, we’re heavily influenced by the Beatles. I suppose a lot of bands were. But ELO used some instruments a lot of bands didn’t although the Beatles used all kinds of orchestration on their studio albums I guess. I even vaguely remember a French Horn maybe once by Sir Paul McCartney. I’m not a musical genius but that’s my take.

I always hated how Lynne would omit entire verses during live performances. Maybe he had to during this performance due to TV time constraints, but this was a common thing with him.

It's 4:44 long even without it. We were lucky the program allowed that length for an album cut on a network TV program. That's probably what you are noticing. Time constraints are a real dilemma for groups like ELO where they have to play symphonies within a pop world timeframe.

The song kind of sounds like groupies by Rita Coolidge. Which was redone by the Carpenters and they renamed it Superstar. Rita used to sing it when she was on tour with Joe cocker and the grease band. 😊
