In this video I build a large cross cut sled for my table saw. This is one of the best jigs you can make for it.

Small improvement might be a small 45 degree groove on the bottom of your front fence for dust particles to go so they don't mess up with alignment when you're cutting multiple pieces. I forgot to do that on my sled and now I just keep a brush at hand whenever I use it and clean it out after every cut. Will definitely do that next time :)

Nice sled John and well made... If you are going to use it for your cutting boards, consider adding a few threaded inserts for additional hold downs nearer the blade at the far end (for when you get to the narrow end of the cuts) ifyou get what i mean.

Very nice crosscut sled. The problem with a big crosscut sled is they are heavy and you must find a place to store it. I now use a Incra Miter 5000 Sled and it is almost unwieldy.

Also, it's got to be said that; you certainly have a good way of explaining things and that you're videos are really well produced. Just subscribed. I built one for my P-C table saw. But for some reason, after I cut the kerf, it wouldn't slid anymore. I guess I'll have to start over. Originally used White Oak for the runners. Think I'll switch over to Ipe. I have a couple of strips of that that should work great.

Nice video as always John, although I am not a fan of these myself mainly due to the fact there is no guard over the blade. It would be very interesting to see maybe for a future video if you could come up with answer to this, perhaps how the guard could retract as you make a cut sort of like a chop saw or radial arm saw works, and maybe a stop that prevents the sled going to far forwards and not exposing the blade through your additional block on your fence.
@JohnMcGrathManInShed
@JohnMcGrathManInShed 2 жыл бұрын
You would need at gaurd that could move back as the sled moves forward but it would then hit the back fence it's a difficult one.

Nice sled with good Ideas. I am In the process of building one too for my Metabo TS 254 M. Just a suggestion, next time you might want to make your runners out of those cheap plastic (don´t know how that plastic Is called) food cutting boards found In some Asian shops. I have found 8mm and 10mm thick cutting boards and can be bought for 5€. They will last a lot longer and slide better then wood.

Hi John, this is a super video thanks! One query - my riving knife sits 40mm higher than the top of the blade and I notice yours seems to be slightly below, did you have to alter your riving knife?

Hi John, great vid fella. 👍. Just a question hopefully not stupid? I just bought an Axminster cabinet table saw and over the moon with it. However I was torn between buying a sliding carriage for it which will do my cross cuts or to build a cross cut sled. And based on birch ply costs and the extras needed there isn’t that much difference in cost between the two. However I noticed you have a sliding carriage on your Bosch table saw, yet you still built a cross cut sled. Any reason for that considering both sort of do the same? Just got me thinking if there are advantages over one or the other. Hope you and family all good and great to see the videos. 👍🥃
@JohnMcGrathManInShed
@JohnMcGrathManInShed 2 жыл бұрын
The cross cut sled if made right will always be square so no set up needed, it supports the work on both sides of the cut, is zero clearance so better cut quality and is easy to use. You don't need to make it from birch ply or use what I did. They can be made really cheap.

@@JohnMcGrathManInShed Cheers John. I guess also for me the sliding table sticks far out on the left hand side. So having this would do away with that. Nice one. 👍

As mentioned earlier, I have the same Bosch. Your sled will be difficult to manipulate and store, a bit too large. I made the same mistake starting from 600mm deep, it won't cut 600 at the end :-). Now run the 5 cuts test, you'll be surprised how much you are off... :-(
@JohnMcGrathManInShed
@JohnMcGrathManInShed 2 жыл бұрын
I ran the 5 cut test just to see, it's less than .01mm out over a 165mm cut the calipers reads 31.05mm both ends of the final cut. If you can't use your squares in your shop to make something square then what's the point in having them.
