Large End Grain Bowl # 276

This was a cutoff from the log I used to build the salad bowl in my last video. It was all end-grain and very difficult to turn, but I got her done. Enjoy!!!

Well that looked like you had your hands full with that one. I was tired just watching you. I have not tried an end grain that big before. I have some 20 inch Beech logs in the pile out back. I may just have to try one....just to say I tried. Thanks for all you do.

I lived in northern Maine when I was a young boy and made a few things out of beech bark as a boy scout. I wish we had it here in Arkansas, but we don't. So I can' tell you what to expect. Please keep me informed and a pic or two. Thanks for watching, Larry

thats a beautiful bowl Larry. definitely worth your hard work! that crack that you filled with starbond several times went all the way through. is that what ive heard referred to as "wind shake", or "ring shake"? Phil at Shady Acres had one awhile back that had it. no matter, just wondering! good job! ❤😊

Good question Dave. I was wondering about that myself, as I've always been told to stay away from "wind/ring shake", as it's extremely dangerous to turn due to its implosion risk...

Nice work Larry 👏! I know how you like using your carbide but I think the bowl gouge might've been cutting a little better. Only problem with that is you gotta sharpen more. I've got a peach tree stump I'm thinking about cutting it end grain but after watching you do that one I don't know lol. I gotta say tho honey locust is some very hard wood. Naw, the Beaver cut better. Like you said sharpening would have been extreme. I would bet that I would have had to sharpen between 10 and 20 times. That was about the hardest it gets. Take care, Larry

nice bowl larry. how do u get a even layer of sanding sealer and the polycrylic i brush it on the wipe with rag and boom nothing but lines in it. i have also tried applying it with a rag. i have been trying for two weeks now getting nowhere

Oh, there are lines. Don't use a pattern when brushing or wiping. And easy does it. Don't wipe too long, it sets up pretty fast. Usually, if you stop wiping when it's pretty wet, the lines settle out. When It dries, hit it lightly with 400 then follow up with 0000 steel wool. 0000 steel wool will give you a shine. But you have to spin it at a high speed, be careful, it's grabby. If you want even more shine, polish, use Acks. Take care, Larry

I've had a couple rough two months. Seems like everything snowballed on me all at once. Spent 2 days in the hospital with pneumonia. Fell and broke my pelvis in a couple places. Went to get a knee replacement and had an Afib episode (heart out of rhythm). Had that fixed by getting it shocked back into rhythm. Found out I had CLL, that's a form of leukemia. No treatment was necessary. I know I missed something, but you asked. The good news is that all is under control. I am walking now with some effort and very little pain. After 5 weeks of being laid up, I am now back in the shop. I should be turning soon. I have a couple of videos to edit, then I will be caught up. Thanks for your concern. Larry,
