Nabila was also used in a James Bond movie, Never say Never again. First time I saw the yacht was in 1981, in Monaco, during a holiday in Cagnes sur Mer. Nabila was in Monaco during the day, moved out of port in the evening, to anchor just outside where a party was held. We could hear the music and see the lights of the discotheque onboard. For a 21 year old who had never seen something like that it was pretty amazing.

Indigo wasn’t secured for the storm. He’s docked 2 over from mine. The NZ captain stated “he was thinking of retiring”. The yacht was NOT properly secured. I was there an hour ago and every dock cleats were still secured to the deck. The name of our marina is Marina Jacks. There were 2 other vessels that broke free from our mooring area as well.

It’s def showing its age and didn’t look well maintained. The stainless/chrome work around the anchor lower housing area was badly stained. Repair will be 2 months dry dock and cost an absolute fortune!

Sad to see Nabila in such a sorry state. She was perhaps the first of the modern true super yachts. I also saw her in Monaco and Antibes in the 80s. I visited the designers house in Chelsea who kept a beautiful scale model of her in his hall. I didn’t know who he was but recognised the the boat.

That crashed super yacht then known as Nabila and owned by Adnan Khashoggi was in 1984 berthed for several weeks at Muara Port of Brunei Darussalam during its first independence day to house high profile guests as luxury accomodation for guests was insufficient on land. She of course attracted a lot of curious on lookers. There was a helicopter parked on her helipad and armed guards were patrolling the decks, their weapons were seen as they leaned over deck railings with jackets unbuttoned.

Wonder why the NZ military ship wasn’t running a split power plant close in shore? The main propulsion is by a diesel electric propulsion plant. There are four 1,820kW diesel powered generator sets giving an output of 7,680kW / 10,445bhp. It provides 690V at 60Hz at a rotary speed of 1,800rpm. There is also a 388kW harbour generator with a 690V / 60Hz output at a rotary speed of 1,800rpm and a 99kW emergency generator producing 690V / 60Hz at 1,800rpm. The Edda Fonn is driven by two AC asynchronous water-cooled motors each rating 2,200kW (2,992bhp) at 1,192.5rpm. The vessel is equipped with two diesel-electric driven Steerprop ST-35 azimuth propellers. The propellers have a diameter of 3m. There are also two electrically-driven tunnel thrusters located in the bow with an output of approx. 1,150kW each. In addition, there is a super-silent type and a retractable thruster with an output of 1,350kW.

You need to define what you men by split power plant, because what you have described is not split. Its all diesel generator powered and electrically driven via a switchboard. Redundancy/flexibility could be provided by multiple switchboards but your heaps of largely irrelevant tech data, did not mention switchboards at all.

My father was a drilling engineer for six years, producing and locating the Statford drilling platforms, and drilling some of the wells from each platform. There is a huge shipyard there that produces tankers, and also built the Statford platforms.

When I worked on MY Montkaj 2007/08 MY Kingdom was permanently moored alongside the entrance to Antibes Marina in France. Starboard side on. Bow facing port exit. She was there for all the time I lived in France until 2012. That's all the info I have on her from my aspect.

Anchors are like emergency brakes on yachts, but they need lots of chain before they'll dig in to the sea floor enough to stop the vessel. In this case it was too little, too late.

I remember "Nabila" being alongside in Antibes when Adnan Khossgi owned her. One day a cavalcade if Mercedes came down the quay transporting "the boss". "AK" saw someone he knew, and the convoy stopped, so he could say hello to his friend. The accompanying bodyguards (must have been three car loads of them), all dressed in black suits and the mandatory Ray-Bans, were "having kittens". AK would have made the perfect target as he was wearing a white suit!

Ah yes, those were the days before grabbing Russian oligarchs yachts and Kiev and Putin. I also had the great pleasure of being a guest when she was in Hong Kong when Trump was trying to find a wealthy Chinese or Hong Kong buyer. It had been gorgeously over the top redecorated with solid gold bathroom faucets, a private barbership and chair specially made for Mr Trump and a disco that flashed photos of Ivana and Donald above your heads as you danced. It was less of a loss to sell the yacht than the cost or replacing all those flashing photos. Someplace in my keepsake box I still have my invitation and lots of photos and a large orchid stem plus a bar of soap with Trump Princess label. It was so much fun---one day I was a guest of AMEX and another day guest of a Hong Kong billionaire. As I said, those were the days when the very wealthy had their own beauties built over the top for then! But no one was so poorly trained that they ran into the quay! Geeze!!!

When I was in my early 20’s a bunch of friends and I rented a house boat on lake Lanier in Georgia and right about the helm of the boat was a sign that said “10 tons and NO Brakes!” What made the sign even more poignant was right as the rental agent was going over the controls etc another houseboat was in the process of trying to dock the boat and the person driving the boat screwed up and instead of bumping the boat into reverse to slow it down the person screwed up and went from the engine in neutral he suited the engine to forward and wacked the throttle propelling the houseboat into the floating docks send people on the dock into the water along with a good bit of their luggage and provisions etc.

This was the yacht originally owned by Adanan Khashoggi. Khasoiggi was well known in las vegas for being a high roller. especially at the Caesar's Palace baccarat tables. He was an alleged arms dealer. I dealt craps to him once. Not at Caesar's.
