The 1013-foot ship "Paul R. Tregurtha" passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge as it departed for Lake Superior in Duluth, MN! The huge ship almost used up every painted marking for its draft! The stern draft was sitting at an incredible depth of 29 feet below water! That is equivalent to having a three-story building still below water! It's hard to believe that any vessel can handle heavy cargo weight and depth like that! However, the Tregurtha is indeed the largest lake ship in the world!
This ship was packed full of coal as it headed for Michigan. Luckily the sun was very bright and the sky was blue which allowed me to get very good contrast shots of the ship going by. There's even one point where the shadow of the Aerial Lift Bridge is visible with perfect detail on the ship's side.
You will hear a tremendous horn blast salute (116.8 decibels) from the ship to the Lift Bridge, and the bridge returns the salute with its own powerful horns.
