⚓️Largest Lake Ship Submerged 29-feet in Duluth Waters!

The 1013-foot ship "Paul R. Tregurtha" passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge as it departed for Lake Superior in Duluth, MN! The huge ship almost used up every painted marking for its draft! The stern draft was sitting at an incredible depth of 29 feet below water! That is equivalent to having a three-story building still below water! It's hard to believe that any vessel can handle heavy cargo weight and depth like that! However, the Tregurtha is indeed the largest lake ship in the world!
This ship was packed full of coal as it headed for Michigan. Luckily the sun was very bright and the sky was blue which allowed me to get very good contrast shots of the ship going by. There's even one point where the shadow of the Aerial Lift Bridge is visible with perfect detail on the ship's side.
You will hear a tremendous horn blast salute (116.8 decibels) from the ship to the Lift Bridge, and the bridge returns the salute with its own powerful horns.
Information about the ship Paul R. Tregurtha: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Pa...

Evan! Guess what! I’m going to get on my way to Duluth here in a few minutes as well and I’ll be up there all weekend. I checked marine traffic and there’s a lot of traffic Saturday and Sunday. It’s going to be a good few days. There possibly could be something today but we’ll see what’s happening. Don’t forget to look for the bright blue LED light on the light pole by the tug Bayfield on the north pier side. That the “Boat Friends Beacon” which lets you know that I’m in the area recording something either live or for a future video. Come and say hi if you see me. One telltale sign that it’s me is that I usually wear one of my white stocking caps.

Hey Mike, as an aside the shot at the beginning of this video you are walking on the lift bridge towards Grandmas , the large building on the left side there on the left side Lake is the building I believe was Jeno’s factory. The guy I was trying to talk to on one of your previous videos said his sister worked in a pizza factory right across the street from Grandmas, and that is the one I’m thinking is the one….. I may be wrong, but I may be right…. To quote Billy Joel!

Another interesting tidbit boat friends. We all know the PRT is the current 'Queen of the Lakes'. A phrase commonly used to denote the longest vessel sailing the Great Lakes. But did you know there was another famous ship called the 'Queen of the Lakes'? And not necessarily being considered the longest vessel. Well the SS Milwaukee Clipper was in fact, regularly called the 'Queen of the Lakes' due to her unusual beauty and grace. 361 feet in length she cruised 900 passengers and 100+ cars between Milwaukee, WI, Muskegon, MI, and Chicago, IL. It ran for 29 seasons up until 1970. Today she is a museum ship located in Muskegon. I saw it several years ago, but didn't have time to tour it. For folks interested in unusual ship histories, I highly recommend you research the Milwaukee Clipper. Fascinating stuff. Kind of reminds me transformation-wise of the story of the Lee A. Tregurtha.

8 years ago the PRT carried a most unusual cargo. She carried the entire pilot house of the St Mary's Challenger to the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo, Ohio. A crane lifted it and placed it on the bow. The 1908 ship was scrapped in Sturgeon Bay, WI. She was last used as a cement carrier. The pilot house is being restored. I saw it 2 years ago on display.

@@vibewithmike it's sad to say but the Fitz, the Morrell, and the Bradley sinkings could all have been avoided. Late season runs to try and put profits ahead of safety. Each of these ships had significant known hull issues. They were of just a few who ventured out into those storms. The companies and their captains put their crews in grave danger. 90 sailors lost their lives.

@@vibewithmike While I was there the company was owned by George Steinbrenner, the NY Yankees owner. The yard was located on the Black River in Lorain, just across the river from the Bascule Bridge where State Route 6 would cross over the river. Upriver were the still mills and the mill was supplied with materials to make the steel by ships going upriver to unload. Right there was a pretty sharp bend in the river and during the winter those ships would have to use their bow thrusters to help them make that turn, often sending big chunks of ice from a partially frozen river flying. Often I would eat my lunch or coffee break on the top deck and watch those ships make that turn.

At 116.8, the PRT didn't beat her previous record. Still strong though !

It sounded louder than that, but I have to go with the reading

That's NOT "submerged", it's "Drag" , submerged means it would be 29 feet under water, Drag is the depth, of whatever it might be below water line, in this case 29 feet, when empty it will be only a couple feet, maybe even inch's.

Well, T, thank you for the information. This is what this Boat Friend community is all about. We help each other learn more and understand these vessels and life together. I really appreciate you providing this information for all of us. I really hope you have a happy Thanksgiving, and hope that you come back and spend some time with all of us in comment section with the ships.👍⛴️

"Draft" not "Drag" is the distance between the keel and the waterline. The vertical numbers shown on the bow, stern and midship show this distance. There is a minimum draft to safely operate any vessel. Typically ballast water would be taken to operate the ship sans any cargo.

That discoloration is all from the iron ore that they wash off the side.
