Great advice that would have saved me HOURS as I was setting mine up! One tip when picking a drum for this: make sure the snare throw off has a long drop, otherwise you’ll have the snare wire jangling when you lay into it with snares off. I had to adjust mine (Mapex MPX) to where the adjustment knob is backed all the way down for off, and almost all the way up for on.

The first one of these I watched was the Enter Sandman video and I was convinced it was a floor tom of a different colour. Never noticed that it was actually a snare. I like how he gets such a great sound out of such a low tuning with it as well. Edit: Mike Mangini uses I think it's a 10' hybrid that doubles as a high pitched rack tom.

Chris Dave was the first guy I saw do it before Snarky was even formed. As a matter of fact Chris had a set with all snares instead of a snare and two or three toms. Just like people saying Chris was using bongos as rack toms first. Horacio Henandez was doing it when he was with Michel Camilo and Anthony Jackson back in the 90s but I digress. But I have to say outside of Chris Dave I think Sput utilized it in a less specialized more and more wider universal way that can apply more to playing in general. When Chris did it, it seemed to be so specialized you couldn't help but be tied into the Chris Dave thing. Sput opened it up.

Lol… I need one now. We’ve got a snare, 5 Tom’s, 13”,14x10”,14x14”(on rack floor mount or we leave it out and now I want to convert that one to a snom. 15” floor and 18” floor. Big fat kick, a 14” snare, 2 hi hats one with a drop clutch, chimes, cowbell, Tamborine, 3 roto toms, 3 crashes, a large splash, a 8” splash, 2 rides and a Zil bell 6”. This doesn’t include the other drums and cymbals we keep in the back room or the gig bags….. the drumset literally wraps around 290 degrees. Also using 3 overhead condenser mics and then each drum is miced separately, so we use 9-10 mics to record it and an extra 2 mics we will set up for the chimes, and roto Toms if we are using those on a song. Or put one of those closer to the hi hats where the cowbell and Tamborine are. It can get pretty claustrophobic. I forget what model but all the drum shells/shell hardware were separately purchased but ALL are 1974 ludwig, the more famous kit Bonham played in later years. The silver one. I’m also not a drummer so could be wrong. My guitarist (who owns the kit) told me. But they are for sure vintage 1974 Ludwig’s. Using mostly paiste and Zildjian for the cymbals and of course, remo emperors.
