Alistair Crooke made a great point earlier today: the escalation in Ukraine was not about international relations but rather domestic maneuvering. Probably Trump's bellicose comments should be interpreted in a similar manner: he is maneuvering with the domestic political forces. He has a little less than two months in which he has to spar with the neocons while they have control of the levers of Executive power. Once he's inaugurated, for a couple of weeks at least he will at best have acting heads that he can trust (and frequently they will not be trustworthy). Until mid February, he will not have his appointees in place across the Executive, and it may take longer depending on how the Senate behaves. Once he has his people as heads, he will need to move down the bureaucratic chain to clean house and be able to exert real authority, a process that could take at least another month, perhaps much longer. So his words (and those of fools like Gorka) today should be seen in a context in which the neocons yield significant power. If Trump plays his cards right, by mid 2025 he will have real control over the Executive. To achieve this, especially in this dangerous interregnum, he is wise to confuse his enemies with mixed signals.
