Love the idea of doing charts like this. I live close to the beach and this has given me some really good ideas for local shipping/land charts. Beautiful work by the way!!! Very very nice!!!

Fence looks like it took a blade hit - did that to mine recently. Nice work.

It looks crooked in the frame on the left and top sides. Is that just the camera?
@JohnKuiphoff7 жыл бұрын
Tom B. You've got a good eye! The frame is perfectly square, however, the hand drawn illustration of the map is a slightly wavy in some places. I've made about 25 towns and cities so far - cities tend to have cleaner illustrations; small towns are a bit more organic.

I noticed too, maybe align before finishing framing.

Which Universal laser engraver do you have? What’s the wattage of the tube?

You do a great job of telling a story- using different angles, etc. Though I prefer to have the person narrate and give details, your video is nice change that's very well done. Most videos without narrating don't come close to what you've done. Keep up the great work - both in videography and the laser/woodwork.

Why not just print direct onto the board with a UV printer. Roland etc any color you like and even burnt color like the laser but you could highlight spots of interest in different colors or shades.
@JohnKuiphoff7 жыл бұрын
I'd like to try using a UV printer - that'd be much faster. Thanks for the tip. Although, I'm not sure where I could access a UV printer in my area... I'll be on the lookout for one. I've tried a few other techniques as well including using Corian and paint, stainless steel and cermark, special acrylics, etc. Thanks for watching!

Engraving looks better? Looks like more work went into the project and can ask for a higher price too.

Did anyone else get scared watching him cut that 2 1/2” strip of plywood off the sheet and just leave the off cut in contact with the blade? I’m a voc-ed instructor and that one gives me a heart attack every time I see it done!
@JohnKuiphoff6 жыл бұрын
I’m really careful about standing to the side of the blade in case it decides to throw the cut off in my direction. That’s the way I learned to use a table saw when I was in school. I also only use sharp blades. Is there a better way? I’m always open to doing something better or safer.

John Kuiphoff Easiest thing would be use a push stick to advance it through or reverse your setup where you push map between fence and blade and push it all the way through. 2 1/2” piece just does what it wants to the left of the blade not trapped.

Pretty sure your website got hacked and if not you have the most annoying monetization strategy ever.
@JohnKuiphoff5 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas - Thanks for the heads up! I really appreciate it. I let the domain name lapse as I'm not selling the maps anymore and it looks like someone else with the most annoying monetization strategy ever picked it up. Ugg... I'm sorry about that. I removed the link from the description and trimmed the video (which might take a few hours to refresh). The maps were a great introduction to laser engraving but now I'm using my own Glowforge to do much cooler things. In two weeks, I'll be releasing a video on engraving approximately 60 different kinds of materials. Thanks again!
