Scottish drinking culture is real. I was at a Russell Howard gig in the SECC and they had to _close the bar_ to get people to go into the gig because no one wanted to stop drinking long enough to go and see the thing they'd paid to see.

In East London it was thus .....Bell rings, everybody gets another two pints or doubles if on spirits...but if its a local ignore the pot man shouting in your ear "Come on you boys PLEEAASE!" as you both know its for the non regulars. As soon the non -regulars went, doors bolted, music came back on and the best part of the evening had started into the early hours of the morning.

In my 20s I was a backpacker from Canada travelling around UK and working in pubs, and soon became familiar with the lock-in culture. After closing up the pub one evening, I invited a few regulars to the downstairs area where the lights/music would not be seen/heard by anyone who happened to be passing by outside, and we could carry on with the festivities as described above. We sipped and supped for a while, and then after a few rounds of libations the morning cleaner came in, and we both gave each other the simultaneous "what the hell are you doing here?" when I looked at the clock and realized it was 8:35am lol

Couldnt help but laugh so much my sides hurt, the thing is he aint wrong, it aint a proper night out in most of the UK unless you arrive home drunk as a skunk and last orders are always met with a bunch of people heading to the bar to get the last couple of shots and the last couple of beers in and the Scotts enjoy the drinks even more 😂

I remember in the 70's in Scotland when ALL the pubs shut at 10pm - the bar-staff would shout 'Last otders' at 9.30pm !. That half-hour space betwwen 9.30pm and 10pm was christened 'The Crazy Hour' even though, technically it was only 30 mins ??. But anyway, guys whod been drinking by themselves all night, weee now ordering 5/6 pints and X amounts of large whisky's ax soon as 'Last otders' was announced - oh the joys, accompanied by oh the blood !

It was the Scoti people from Ulster, Northern Ireland, who invaded ancient Scotland and settled, eventually mixing with the Pictish people. The ancient Romans and Greeks make reference to the Scoti in their literature. There is a Roman work called *Nomina Provinciarum Omnium* (Names of All the Provinces), dating to around 312AD, which lists Scoti as a new name for the Irish. But I appreciate the reference as the ancient roots of those "far flung areas of the Roman Empire" is shrouded in mystery due to the lack of written history/records of those times and even as the referenced article attests to. They seen an island to the west and, before they docked, made a U-turn when they seen that the locals looked very similar to the people who gave their army a hard time. They went back to Ireland to barter with them instead. Scotland was so tough that the Romans were brought to a stalemate. The Irish were so scary that the Romans chose not to even attempt an attack.

Moving from Northern Ireland to England in 1991 was a bit of a shock. 'Ding, Ding! Last Orders!' 'Y'what?' In Ulster or the Republic, we carried on until it was last man standing. And then you left the Pub with a plastic bag with a carryout of a few unopened beers for the stagger home. I was in Donegal to marshal a car rally in 2003 and we never got back to our hotel from the local bar before 4am. Not quite so much fun the next morning stood on a live rally stage trying to vomit a full fried breakfast (sausage, fried egg, bacon, black pudding, white pudding, fried bread, soda farl, tomato, beans, etc.) out of your nose, ears & eyelids, but it was an experience nonetheless.

I live in south Derbyshire and we're exactly the same. I've never yet met an American who understands drinking. I always laugh at US tv shows where the wild crowd risk one extra beer or glass of chardonnay, making a grand total of four. Which I call breakfast.

Wasn’t a tribe or clan. Was all Irish. Brian Boru styled himself imperator scotorum, emperor of the Irish. The old lad on the five pound note was Scotus, a medieval scribe whose pen name was simply Irishman. After about 1100 or so it’s no longer used to describe the Gaels of Ireland and is reserved solely for those living in northern Britain.

Difference in last call in the UK (scottland) is it happens between 22-24. You cant buy it at stores past 22. bars past 24 sometimes. In america you can buy till 3 in bars and stores. Huge diffrence when the cut off is.
