LAST DAYS IN GRENADA - SwT 74 GETTING READY TO SAIL AGAIN

This is my last week in Grenada and setting sail again towards Grenada.
My buddy boat Wonderful with Kylie and I hope for new protocols Tuesday so we can make a stopover at Carriacou. But if not we just gonna sail straight to Martinique. In this episode we moved Wanderful back to Le Phare Bleu and I do some last minute jobs on BE FREE.

I`m sailing sailing around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since.

I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. Instead of using a pin to connect both the hydraulic ram and the drag link going to the other side to the bell-crank, I think it would be stronger to attach the hydraulic ram straight to the drag link. There are a lot of opposing forces on that pin since the ram is on one side of the bell crank and the drag link is on the other. The bell crank acts as a fulcrum, transmitting the torque of the moment through the pin in a shearing movement. If you can create linkage to attach the ram directly to the drag link, you eliminate most of that torque. Since your drawing shows rams on both sides of the steering gear, you might be able to reposition them and use a push/pull cable system (similar to the cable on a bicycle for changing gears or the brakes), where the rams pull on a cable that is attached to the drag link. Each ram pulls the cable/drag link in the desired direction, while the other ram “pushes” the cable to allow free movement. You may see this as one more thing that can go wrong while at sea in a storm at night, but this is basically the same idea many aircraft use.

Thank you so much for your very good input on this. You are absolutely correct! I had a similar solution on a previous boat however the challenge here is space. It’s drag link goes under cockpit floor in a compartment where it’s not much space except for what the link needs. I could go below and attach under the drag link however there is where the garage is. If it was space to weld a fitting to the draglink it would definitely been a better solution. There is no place to fit the strong (5 tons) pump either as it’s base needs really strong and no flex wall to be mounted. I have already reinforced metal frame for this that’s bolted and fiberglassed. It has worked pretty well but I can see wear and tear on the pin. If increasing strength and redesign of this don’t work I will redesign entire autopilot setup. Redundancy and safety is high priority to me as solo sailor. The original setup was electric drive fitted same way but not as strong and gave up in big waves and strong winds. Gearbox failed later and I wanted hydraulics instead. Simpler and easier to maintain, yet stronger. So the problem is moved to this pin instead... Evolution of my autopilot project that’s on version 2.0 now. I must say the entire steering system and how it’s designed is very good. It’s the original autopilot setup that was not good enough for my kind of sailing. Previous ap gave up at 35-40+ kts wind with following conditions. The setup I have now only tested in gusts up to 55-60 kts but worked well. But for sure can be better. Thanks for sharing Thomas,love your straight forward videos/story.Is that steering system complex?Wondering if you have a plan B to keep either or both rudders in operation if the linkages etc get sad?

Thank you for watching 🙏🏻 The steering is actually pretty straight forward and super solid. It’s the pin for my hydraulic that’s been a challenge. However if it fails I can easily walk around it and even manoeuvre with one rudder only. Also possible to manually steer with emergency tiller. This is by far a much better system than lots of other solutions with chain or cable. All the best 🍻

Thank you 🙏🏻Not much to do as it’s just how it is at the moment. PCR is mandatory even travelling within Grenada’s islands. So if we wanna stop in Carriacou before Martinique it will be 3 PCR tests in 5 days. In Grenada they even profit on the PCR’s and it’s expensive. In Martinique it’s for free. But life is to short to focus on stupid things and now I’m just happy to soon be sailing again😀 Cheers 🍻
