When I was a senior in HS I wrote a satirical essay about how we shouldn't do anything about climate change because it was gods will and if we tried to fix it it would show we didn't have faith in him to fix it, and to hear an actual representative say something so similar is just... Fun fact : only 2 countries have not signed the Paris Climate Agreement. - Syria, which is in ruins in the midst of a civil war, and - Nicaragua, who rejected it because it DIDN'T GO FAR ENOUGH FOR THEM!! Even North Korea is in! Will the US be the 3rd country? Well, they have officially asked to leave not long before this episode of Last Week Tonight but they cannot actually leave the agreement before 2020 so we'll see.

@Mike B Yes, low wage shitjobs that robots ought to do! Let me ask you this; How come the EU is being flooded by US investment if the economy is STEADY in the US? Because creating shitty low wage jobs based on socialist policies from ARGENTINA of all places, is a really short term way of creating jobs! It does not "create" jobs, it simply makes an american able to work a shit job that a chinaman could and will do at 20% of the cost, then the dude from vietnam shows up and laughs his ass off, yes more people have jobs but even more people have LESS to go around in the long term! because, guess what? Vietnam is not under Embargo. And guess what? the EU exists and is a bigger economic powerbroker, even without the UK, compared to the US. And we dont embargo china. so they sell us things cheaper because you guys stopped buying their stuff, remember, basic supply and demand here. However, this means you got 1.6 million shitty jobs, worked by, americans, selling goods in the US only, because everyone else gets their stuff from china....because its cheaper and quality is about the same, fuck the chinaguys even do cheaper deliveries! Fucksake the economic policies Trump is pursuing are literally from the fucking 1700s and endorsed by KARL FUCKING MARX!!! My nation was reliant on trumps current economic model for, oh, about 1200 years!!! So answer me this; Why did Denmark stop relying on its mercantilism economics and trade tariffs? Dont bother I will help you; Because 1; it hurt our economy along with that of our neighbors, 2; the prussians yelled at us very loudly, 3; france threatened a fucking invasion! 4; britain destroyed our navy and we ran outta wood basically! If you want your future to be that of Social Democratic Denmark, do vote for Trump next time, because his policies are so fucking socialist that social democrats across the world go "yikes, thats a step too far pappa stalin!"

As a German it makes me angry that he pulled out of the Paris Deal. Europe and Germany are independently getting greener - Germany uses currently 36% renewable energy (which is still too low for my liking) - but that the USA pulled out doesn't endanger only the USA itself, but the whole world. The USA is on second place of highest CO2 emissions of the world, but largest by CO2 emissions per person. (16 tons per person) It has a _responsibility_ to reduce its emissions and to get cleaner. Because Europe and Germany can become as green as we like, when the USA emits even more greenhouse gas than they do now all that doesn't help. But if we're lucky Trump won't be reelected again and the next president stays in the Deal.
@CryotoWolf

This doesnt change anything. The paris climate agreement is the shittiest agreement ever. Every country that signed it say they will reduce carbon emissions. But if they dont there is no consequences. Its empty promises.
@Magrat_Knoblauch
@Magrat_Knoblauch 5 жыл бұрын
@@CryotoWolf Well, I agree with you that not much happened so far (which is very disappointing), but at least there was an effort to reduce emissions and to do so globally. Trump wants to increase coal mining (also bad for environment), the government has now given the ok to search for oil in the sea with seismis waves (which will harm marine species), he doesn't believe in climate change. Maybe the Paris Agreement weren't so far successful, but with his climate policies he goes backwards and successfully prevents the US from fullfilling their share of the deal.

Believe me I'd love to have a government easier like Europe's. But the issue is that my senator is like your chancellor. And I don't even know who that is or really what he does. We don't have the same relationship with our states as you do your nations even though many of our states are LARGER than your nations. In our minds the president is the equivalent to the chancellor but in reality he's more like Julius Caesar. He's the elected head of an empire basically that thinks like a nation. Politics are so Goddamn messy here, mostly because NOBODY realizes those facts. The United States is basically an empire, and yet I have NEVER met another person American or otherwise whose ever just came to that realization. To everybody it's a giant nation like France or a compounded nation U.K. with multiple large chunks of varying independence. And because we view it so, we don't really behave politically like we should. My state is a fucking nation basically, but until like 2 years ago the only election I really knew anything about was the presidential because it's so controversial. Same with most people. It's its not our perceived nation leader then we couldn't give two fucks half the time. It's honestly not comparable to Europe like that. Even though it SHOULD.

*actually, "climate change" aswell as "climate crisis" are _unwords._ there is no such scientific term as "global climate", because that would paradoxize the existence of "climate zones". what we do have, is "global temperature" and "global temperature change". if you keep using the wrong terms, all you do is cheerleading the doubters & disbelievers.* yes, it's getting warmer, ofc it is, we're at the end of an ice age and spring is warmer then winter. the problem is that we dig out- and bring co² back into the cycle, that has been kicked out of the cycle millions of years ago, which was the basic reason for all of us humans & plants & animals that we know nowadays to thrive into prospering existence. we're manipulating the cold-warm-cold-warm cycle in everything else then a smart and/or healthy way. our global main goal hast to be, to put as much co² back underground as we can. some ~20 year old german students actually invented a selfpowering machine that does exactly that, tho alot more efficient then burying trees.

@Mike B please realise how disturbing what you’re parrotting is. You’ve been speaking about statistics from biased sources about something that should be the most basic thing to understand. You, your family and everyone you care about (including your fuhrer Trump) will die if measures aren’t put in place to delay the effects of climate change. That’s not an opinion, it’s fact. Get a clue.

I'm from this mythical place called Denmark; we're a small country and are all-in-all pretty damn insignificant on a global scale (despite our politicians believing otherwise) but we do pull our weight. I don't care about the US making more money than us... I simply want the United States of America to pull their weight in this climate debacle. It isn't about money - nor should it be about money. It is about ensuring a future for our planet and the generations to come. It is a far bigger hubris to believe you, the politicians of the US, have the right to doom the world by not participating in the fight to save it.

There has been an intense focus on reducing our national carbon emissions and creating sustainable renewable energy opportunities. Despite being a small country, politicians, companies and households alike have all been willing participants in trying to reduce our carbon footprint; many private homes and institutions have solar cells installed, along with a growing number of "solar-farms" popping up throughout our countryside, and energy companies are making the gradual shift to exclusively using/selling renewable energy produced by windmills.... And so much more! We are making an effort: despite our small size, we realise the importance of making such changes and even though we are less than 6 millions people, *we pull our weight and we are proud to do do*

Calle Q omg that makes me so mad... about your manager. My business doesn't recycle right now, but me and a co worker have our own recying bin that we take turns taking home... and I've tried to approach some managers about a recycle program, and the response I'm getting is: costs more, more work involved, people won't actually follow through and use it correctly... a lot of these are misconceptions... So it just sucks :(

@Matt 88 [ *References Below, read in full* ] My rebuttal to that vid. 36% of India's Energy is produced through renewable sources, compared to the US's 17% production (or 11% consumption). China's proportion of renewable energy production is comparable to US at 12% [1,2,3] Although China emits twice the amount of CO2 that US does, China has over 4x times the population of US. Therefore their per capita emissions are half of that of US's. And India, with again 4x times the population, emits half that of US (so their per capita is 1/8th of US). [4,5] Yes, US is reducing its emissions more than China & India. But -China- (they should be in b/w developed & developing) & India are developing countries. They had ~75 years to develop & go through wood, coal, oil, and to renewables; whereas US had over 100 years to develop using coal (the backbone of actual (not US) Rural areas), another 50 years to develop using oil, and 75 years to migrate to greener energy sources. Now, India & China aren't increasing their emissions, it has either plateaued or started to decrease. [6] *And even the whataboutism here isn't accurate. US isn't special in saying they'll reduce their emission by 26-28% by 2030 compared to 2005. From 2005 to 2014, there was a ~10% decrease in their annual Carbon emissions, or 1.1% per year. Continuing this trend, there should be 27.5% decrease by 2030, exactly what the US set their target as.* [9,11] India's unconditional target was less than their trajectory, like he said, but their other conditional (which the US doesn't have) targets make India effectively be on the same trend as US (remember, it is a developing country). [China is doing the same thing as US, saying it will stay true to predictions] [7,8,10] The Paris Agreement was never meant to have some restrictions or rules, because no one would have signed up to it (including US). It was meant to recognize the problems (not solve them) and unify the world on this issue. The US loses nothing by staying in (like I said, nothing extra was done), but by leaving it weakens one of the rare int'l acts of unity. *References* - 1-cea.nic.in/wp-content/uploads/pdm/2020/12/growth_2020.pdf 2-www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=92&t=4#:~:text=In%202019%2C%20renewable%20energy%20sources,about%2017%25%20of%20electricity%20generation. 3-www.statista.com/statistics/952950/china-perceived-and-actual-share-of-renewable-energy-sources-used/ 4-www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/global-greenhouse-gas-emissions-data 5-www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ 6-ourworldindata.org/co2/country/united-states?country=~USA 7-www.globalenergyinstitute.org/indias-conditional-unconditional-climate-pledge 8-climateactiontracker.org/countries/india/pledges-and-targets/ 9-climateactiontracker.org/countries/usa/pledges-and-targets/#:~:text=Paris%20Agreement%20targets&text=The%20US%20NDC%20set%20a,change%20and%20forestry%20(LULUCF). 10-climateactiontracker.org/countries/china/pledges-and-targets/ 11-www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/inventory-us-greenhouse-gas-emissions-and-sinks

@Matt 88 [ *PLS READ IN FULL* ] *''You are so dumb that you believe the ccp lies about their renewable energy. ''* Did you even see my references?? I didn't use anything influenced by the CCP. Most of them were US, Indian or Independent agencies. [For example, China estimates that 36% of their energy production is renewables whereas other agencies say it's actually 12%. What do you think I used?] *''they make 100 new coal plants a year and use so much coal that they currently have shortages. ''* I can't refute that, I may have defended a Paradoxical China a little too much (simultaneously building many coal plants and reducing solar panel prices by producing so many of them, for example) . But I'd like to add that most of these plants (including newly commissioned ones) are run less than half the time, and even when they are run, they are run at lower than 50% capacity. Granted they are starting to lag on their goals, but they *are* trying to take some measures (And although this may be hypocritical of me, I'd like to point out that an American emits twice the amount of a Chinese, even though China in total emits double that of US). [1,2] Ignoring for the moment the whataboutism in pointing out others' flaws; Saying you won't do it because others aren't as lucky, as developed or as good as you (there are those who are better than you), is at-best self-centered, and at-worst hostile. [1]-www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-will-china-build-hundreds-of-new-coal-plants-in-the-2020s [2]-www.npr.org/2019/04/29/716347646/why-is-china-placing-a-global-bet-on-coal

Anyone else on a John Oliver spree right now? It's 11pm feb 15 right now....and the new season starts tomorrow. Somehow I ended up on a LWT marathon tonight. Didn't intend to....but I watched the one on televangelists, then the one right after Trump won, and then like 5 more after that....and now I'm on this one. I always knew, but kinda sorta took it for granted, but.....this show is so fucking good. On every level. I'm curious what episode 1 of the new season will shine a light on. I honestly think Trump is _so_ consequential that I hope he tackles that first. But....you never know! This show has that very rare ability to _completely_ subvert your expectations. But it's one of the things I love most about LWT. Every video keeps me on my toes and challenges me in some way.
