@CarlosRodriguez-dh7mm7 жыл бұрын
Chameleonred5 He is certainly inconsistent on some policy and I always criticize it, but in totality, I'm of the opinion that he's doing a fair job. Also, did you even read his tax plan? He wants to simplify brackets and lower taxes for the middle and lower classes. The business tax goes from around 35% to 20% actually making America competitive with other countries. We have the highest business tax in the industrialized world. So what happens when businesses decide to come back because they cam afford it (and we're their biggest market)? Lower taxes manages to bring in more tax revenue.

Also, a media literacy and critical thinking class. It's so weird when you delve into this "alternative media ecosystem" and Trumpist forums, and it's just full of people ignoring huge chunks of information/context about each story and parroting each other's easily debunked falsehoods and forcefully twisting the president's words until they can convince themselves that he's some kind of mega-brain genius they can worship, no matter the amount of dumb shit he says/tweets... it's just utterly mindboggling.

@Aziraphale6867 жыл бұрын
Hue: Yeah absolutely, critical thinking skills are something that needs to be strongly emphasized as well. In the same vein, I think there needs to be a change in how people view arguments as having a winner and a loser. It's not about winning, it's about making sure that your opinions and beliefs accurately reflect the real world, and we need to be able to adjust our views when new evidence presents itself.
@crystalsoulslayer7 жыл бұрын
Aziraphale686, I agree. I also think it needs to be made very clear that _disagreement_ and _disrespect_ are two very different things. Too many people seem to regard someone having an opinion they don't as some form of insult. It makes having an exchange of ideas really difficult. And there's also the fact that, depending on the context you first learn about something in, it could mean something very different to you than to someone else. If you get your news from the kinds of placed Hue Manatee mentioned, you're practically speaking a different language from people who get their news elsewhere.

He used whataboutism during his speech about Christians during the crusades being just as about as Islam today. As far as trolling goes - Turn to California; The state that says if I have HIV and knowingly fuck someone and infect that the worst I get is a slap on the wrist. Or that Gun Control is a viable solution to gun crime even though Chicago is running rampant with gun crime and murder and they have the strictest gun laws and is been run by democrats for decades. I find it funny people forget everything the democrats do when someone they like is doing it. Keep it up though, if you push these identity politics were going to have a moron as a president for a second term.

Matt K Even if you were to assume the whataboutism was justified-that is to say, there is a real double standard at work and not a fabricated or exaggerated one-two wrongs don't make a right. Whataboutism is a subset of the argumentum ad hominem, also known as the Tu Quoque argument, which is LITERALLY a logical fallacy. It does not actually constitute a sound argument.

He is at least teaching thinking in an entertaining manner, for which he should receive the accolades he deserves. He provides a tool for critical thinking in bite-sized pieces. I acknowledge the fact that John Oliver is too loud and obnoxious. He definitely is and that makes him hilarious. Try to take it with a grain of salt, its comedy for crying out loud. John Oliver provides the people with what they want, namely entertainment, but even more important he gives the people what they need, a critical voice towards the important topics that need to be addressed. You can't deny this, at least in my perspective. The funny thing is, the people in the US are more likely to listen to a d-bag Brit than a sound American voice (sorry pc people). All in all, I find that he holds an important position in society (as a serious jokester) and should be respected accordingly.

I take it all with a grain of salt...sometimes a lump. I recognize he does some good and can argue a point, but never with a present counter-point. However, he defeats much of the good he does with misguided cynicism. This impacts his followers often into self-defeatist ideals. There is a concept in law which states you cannot come to a court with unclean hands. To convict others when you are guilty yourself. This is a lot of self-defeating dialog...even if entertainment.

Oh...a comedy show...right. Just like all the night talk shows. It's just "comedy" right? It's politics disguised as comedy. You put something out on the world stage...expect it to be scrutinized...or don't put it out there. John Oliver's humorous (apparently), failed logics would be completely destroyed by anyone practiced on counterpoint.

His solutions would be disastrous...he doesn't understand the effectiveness of Trump. Put Shapiro on with Oliver...be the end of the John Oliver show. Hope he invites him on.

Eliphas Leary I am so glad not to be American, but I feel sorry for the US having a president that makes every other country joke about the USA.
