The Mac mini does hold a residual charge in its capacitors when you unplug it. It’s used for what apple calls, “the. Smc controller”. To be safe when unplugging you should unplug the Mac mini and hold down the power button for about 5 seconds.

Thank you!! Just ordered mine today and took a leap of faith not having seen any teardown videos yet. This makes me confident I can do it myself. Might be worth noting that you put the plastic cap and screws on upside down compared to how you started....always a possibility apple might notice that and not want to repair your mac mini down the road, so might be a tiny detail to note :)

The latest Mac mini 2018 builds are no longer user upgradeable - you need to take your Mac mini back to your local Apple Store to have them upgrade it for you. They've changed all the screws to stop you accessing the internals. They look like proprietary T3/4 security screws.

Roberto La Greca Idk I took apart an entire MacBook Pro 13” from 2012 to replace the thermal paste, RAM, battery, and drives and even though it felt daunting everything is much less fragile than you think. Just keep touching metal because ESD is a bitch. Have never had it happen, but some preventative measures go a long way.

Very helpful video - many thanks. My conclusion is that I'll buy one of these with 512 Gb SSD and 16Gb RAM - Apple's premium for that much RAM isn't too bad. Then, when AppleCare on it has expired I'll do the upgrade myself to 32Gb or even 64Gb. But I'll leave it unopened until then.

@GaabrielArchAngel6 жыл бұрын
I am planning to buy 32 GB RAM from Amazon, than take to an Authorised Apple Service Center and pay the service fee which is about £60 so it would be still way cheaper than buying 32 GB from Apple.
@tomburke53116 жыл бұрын
In the end I'm doing something else. I found a 2017 refurbished i5 iMac on the UK Apple site with 32 Gb RAM and 512 Gb SSD for about the same price as I was thinking pf paying for the Mac Mini + 4k monitor. Given that the only thing I can upgrade on the Mac Mini is the RAM, and this iMac already has as much RAM as I'll ever need, I reckon this puts me in the same position. Yes, the processor is a generation older, and is only 4 core rather than 6 core. However there are positives with the iMac: a) it has a GPU rather than integrated graphics; and b) I'll get a new keyboard and mouse as well!
@GregConquest6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, good idea. 16GB is broadly sufficient. And, in a few years, when your Apple Care has expired, 64GB might be much cheaper than it is now. (RAM prices have doubled over the last few years: supply and demand). Prices could go down to a quarter of what they are now. I doubt they'll go up more. There's an incentive now to build more factories. Still, 2x16(=32)GB so-dimms are $300 or so now. Don't you pay $200 for the 8-16GB jump?

and to think the 2012,Model simply required twisting the bottom cover, removing the cover, and then replacing the RAM. Apple has become so anti-consumer since Cook took over.
@JakeM2186 жыл бұрын
According to Geekbench, this is up to 3x more powerful in the same form factor. There’s always going to be compromises with that, and I’m glad they haven’t compromised cooling to make the ram easier to upgrade. Personally, I prefer everything soldered in. It guarantees a lot more quality in the secondhand market knowing that there’s no reason to mess around inside the machine. Secondhand values are then higher, which means upgrading isn’t as much of an issue.

@@JakeM218 My mobile phone is 7x more powerful compared to the one I bought 4 years ago.... They could make it 2cm taller and noone would have bad feelings :)
@AFTstorm6 жыл бұрын
It still isnt that bad with the mini tho. Just a lil bit of twisting and turning
@randommiker6 жыл бұрын
Jake M, compromises? I'm assuming these CPUs get not higher in temps than the one's in the previous models so using that as an excuse for making it a pain to upgrade RAM, is ambiguous. They could have made it easier but didn't. It's seems to be another manipulating tactic of Apples in order to get you to send it to them to upgrade, for $. Your already spending $799 on a ”machine” that only has an i3, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It's 2018, not 2008. $799 should at least get you 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Apple could have provided a $500 solution with a dual-core and 8GB of RAM like in 2014. Nope! Let's not listen to our fans and hike the price another $200 for underwelming specifications.
@8654ZuluFoxtrot6 жыл бұрын
@@randommiker What part of this is difficult in any way? Take out a bunch of little screws, unplug a couple things, take out the old RAM, put in the new RAM, put it all back together. Looks pretty easy to me. Spend 10 mins of your own time to save hundreds of dollars, yes and thank you Apple!
