Xsive19 Which is lore that was given to them by 343 which is the company that is essentially killing off the franchise more and more along with constantly changing lore and retconning loved aspects that were already established by Bungie (yes, Bungie did this to an extent, but only with Reach when they were walking out the door, Reach also at least had the Halo vibe). You see my point? One group of this lore was created by a company that knew their fans, made the franchise into one of the biggest gaming franchises in gaming history and created a story that last till this day, and the other group of this lore is created by 343, who are absolute disappointments and try to replace ODSTs with SIVs that people don't love anywhere near as much as ODSTs.

Xsive19 I had faith in 343, after Halo 4 I thought "Populations are way down and reception isn't good and I don't like where this is going, but 343 is showing signs of going back to classic formulas that worked and were loved by fans" but then Halo 5 released... I hope I don't have to explain this part. I use to be one of the most optimistic people for 343 but they're failing again, and again, and again. Halo Wars 2 showed promise, but I can't put my hopes up over an RTS side game, despite how much I like it. Their recent cover for a novel was recently released about John and Blue Team in the 2530s during the classic Human-Covenant war with badass SIIs. You want to know what the front cover was? Chiefs Halo 5 helmet... and I don't care if It's a "pre-war SII model" it should stay consistent with the lore that was already established from that time period, not throwing Halo 4/5 aesthetics on older lore for the Hell of it. I went on a bit of a rant there lol but this was a game franchise that I love, and still love the older lore, before 343's atrocious actions came along. And there a many more people like me that are also voicing their displeasure.

@xmm-cf5eg6 жыл бұрын
@LateNightGaming I just really don't like how the 343 era of halo handles its characters. Master Chief went from an enigmatic vessel for the player to a "flushed out character with his own goals and motivations." Which I feel ruins the original charm of the big hulking green giant. We went from only hints of his perceptions and impressions to halo 4 revealing 30% of the face we were honestly never meant to see, literally ever. As for the ODST cast, making Buck a Spartan 4 ruins his human qualities for me ( at least from an ingame perspective.) In ODST the objective is to escape the city, you're outnumbered and outgunned by enemies that are significantly stronger than you biologically, even with your ODST status and slight physical augmentation. As a regular human being its easier to connect with the ODST squad's plight because they're just as physically vulnerable as you or me would be if we were dropped into their shoes. I don't know about you but I can't relate to a 7 foot tall walking tank in a bulletproof suit of power armor as well as I can a "normal" serviceman fighting to survive. With halo 5 I don't think Buck's character meshes well with being an unstoppable bulletproof killing machine. It's like making Max Payne suddenly 7 foot tall and almost invincible, but you still act as if he's not gotten any upgrades and he still tries to act as if he's a regular joe. I think it's harder for me to relate to the ODST unit if they're suddenly 200% more lethal and combat effective. I mean even Lasky says similar things about being unable to connect with Master Chief because of the fact that MC is a spartan and he is not. "I can't begin to imagine how you feel" or whatever the direct quote from Halo 4 was. (I honestly like Lasky as a character, he's one of the better ones 343 has come up with IMO.) I mean, don't get me wrong I love seeing buck in any form, as I really loved ODST as a game and concept, but it just feels, off. Like 343 is trying to dismantle the established characters bit by bit rather than making interesting new ones to compliment what's left of the original cast. At the end of the day these are written characters owned by a company, they only have natural or believable progression as a character if the person writing them is competent. So making mickey do a face heel turn (like cortana does when they bring her back in 5.) feels really odd to me and out of place. Just as "master chief becoming a terrorist" would have felt if the commercials for Halo 5 weren't juking us like they did. I'm not digging into the author of this ODST book, as I haven't read all of it yet and only know bits and pieces, (*and from what I know it seems like he did a good job*) but with what I know about Halo 1-reach and what I know about 343 halo it just feels like the characters aren't themselves anymore. Halsey seems winded rather than in control, Cortana is just 343 guilty spark as a woman in my opinion, and the Covies act like entirely different species (Elites being designed and acting like Brutes, for literally no reason.) Hilariously enough the only character that feels the same to me is the Arbiter. All in all I think my issues with halo these days is that it feels like it's going through a bunch of unnecessary growing pains, and I think it, it's games, and it's lore suffer because of that. Great video by the way!

As much as I agree with your points, I still think that the player base deserved to see the Rookie's end ingame. Everyone who hasn't read the books simply have this untied string still dangling years later. Ever though I've read the book I think that of all people who should have been a spartan it should have been us, the Rookie. Given how utterly bland and replacable the other 2 osiris team members are, I think having the humorous and silent interplay between the 2 ex-odsts would have been great. Even though I liked the book, the Rookie needed more game time and I can't forgive 343 for killing off one of my favorite characters off-screen even if it was done well.

Which is exactly why I think that his end should have had player input. He is no one else except everyone who has played him and when they put him in a book it takes that away. He is now someone other than just the player. It almost feels like what cod does with all of their scripted action cut scenes. The whole thing with halo is that it has always been the player doing it (that is until 343 came along).
@beastlygecko87066 жыл бұрын
Sorry to necro but we’d probably would have had that in 1 of 3 ways in game. 1. A (likely)shallow cutscene. 2. A repeat of the end of Reach. Or god forbid 3. I get that Spartan IVs have a more human element(though honestly I really liked when they explored the psyche of the IIs), but there's just way too damn many of them, it's like the premise of an MMO explaining why there's tens of thousands of chosen ones running around It's understandable that they'd want to open it up a bit, but ffs they're supposed to be top of the line super soldiers but there's seemingly even more of them than ODSTs, which for as elite as they were supposed to be were also pretty expendable

While they're shoved front and centre, believe it or not, there's only about 300 in total of them iirc. A good chunk being killed in combat against Jul'Mdama's Covenant and the Prometheans. By comparison, there were three companies of 300-350 Spartan IIIs. I personally have no issue with the 4s. As technology progressed and more knowledge was uncovered, it was only natural for the UNSC to develop the means of implementing Spartan-Lite augmentations on their more elite soldiers. Its just a logical progression of the story and a callback to the Orion Project, AKA. Spartan Is. My principle issue is they're pushed front and centre too quickly. Given they train the crap out of the 4s the second they get out of recovery from augmentations, I was honestly little shocked there wasn't some form of subconscious mental reconditioning to go with it - to imprint the proper 'mindset' of a Spartan onto the adult volunteers. Admittedly, if ONI were in charge, something like that would probably have happened. But that would defeat the purpose of Musa's vision for the Spartan 4s. When he speaks to Buck at the end of New Blood, he says he doesn't want a repeat of the 2s and 3s. He doesn't want super soldiers who don't question or show mercy to their enemies. He wants to turn men and women into icons and heroes.

You know, I actually have to thank you for showing some love the one of the Halo franchise most underrated games (IMO). ODST is my favorite, and just becuase of the Rookie too. You just said so in the first part of the video: The Rookie was me. And I always knew it. A friend and I used to play it coop. We kindda role-played that there were actually two rookies. This because we had/have different play-styles. I've always been more into stealth and he into force, so I always had the pistol as my primary and he had a shotgun. Back then I felt that it was ok, since no one really knew anything about the Rookie. To learn that he died is sad to me, as he is indeed my favorite Halo character, but the impact the game and that character left in me is the reason why I love Halo 3 ODST. It's a shame we may never see a PC port, at least, but Ill keep watching playthroughs until the day I can afford a working Xbox and play it again, curtains closed and surround on.

ODST is just so awesome freaking awesome! And i really love New Blood too, it really was an honorable squel to ODSTs story! :)

Hmm... I'm pretty sure Jun was a Spartan III, not a Spartan II.

Casey Collier yeah, minor mistake on my part

+LateNightGaming Yeah, I see that you made a correction in the comments. Noble team has always been somewhat of an enigma, thought it has been well documented that all of it's members were Spartan IIIs with the exception of George who was actually a Spartan II. It would have been much easier to have just claimed a lapse in memory as to who the Spartan II member was, but you corrected yourself, so you've gained my respect. Thank you for the in-depth content and as always, good luck in all your future endeavors.

Thank you for making this video about Buck, I was a big fan of Halo 3 ODST and always wondered why the Rookie didn’t become a spartan in Halo 5 and now I know why the rookie never became a spartan.

Thank you for this video. I'll never play ODST the same way though. I felt devastated about the rookie dying. Though he may not be alive, his spirit will live on, in the darkness of Mombasa streets

Glad you finally did this video. Interesting and really wel made. My only issue with the book is that we still don't have the audio book with Nathan Fillion as the narrator

What a touching story. This one hit me pretty hard. I had heard about this book before, and how it killed off the Rookie, turned Mickey into a traitor, but now that I get the full picture, I have much more appreciation for it. The only thing I think was unnecessary, and worsened Buck's character, was the choice to make him a Spartan. I feel like being an ODST was a crucial part of his character, and Mickey's betrayal still would have worked if they were still ODST's.

Hey, loving the vid so far, just wanted to say that your transitions seem to be a bit quick in the beginning. When you transition from one voice clip to voice clip, it doesn’t seem there’s enough time for what would feel like a natural pause between sentences. Anyways, thought I’d let you know

The way I saw it the rookie stayed silent and did his job with no emotion or regard to anything. He just stared at buck waiting for an oppurtunity to finish the mission and escape but he was shot.

@LateNightGaming Thanks for this. The video is great and it helps me remember my childhood playing ODST and how depressing and just immersive it was.

Bucks story is second only to Master Chiefs. He is one of the best characters in the series. His story is purely human even after he becomes a Spartan. Bucks evolution from a simple ODST to a Spartan supersoldier is as great as it is touching and heartwarming

Off topic but I just noticed that there was a Plasma Riffle in the Halo 4 cutscene. They had the Storm Riffle in game but I find that a bit interesting.

I’ve said this in other videos about the New Blood book but I was so heartbroken when I found out the Rookie had been killed. The Rookie and Chief are my favorite characters so losing one of my favorite characters was so soul crushing. I know that I am not the only one that feels that way but still damn. I still shed a tear for the Rookie. I didn’t know that Virgil and Saddie were in the book

@LateNightGaming Love these retrospectives and summaries of out-of-game stories. I haven't read the book, and I feel like you did a good job of conveying the emotions from New Blood's story. Also, I can tell you go back and re-record certain lines in your videos; I assume that's because you review your initial recording and are self critical of inflection, pacing, etc. Just want to say I appreciate you doing that. I feel like nailing _how_ you read your essays is making a huge difference in your videos.

Most people talk about spartan II’s and IV’s, but I’ve always liked III’s. They were a good mix of tech, humanity, hatred for the Covenant as they were orphaned by them, and utter strength and fearlessness.

Dude this could've been a great two part game with the first part following the crew as ODST's, them taking out covenant remnants, up till just after the halfway point. Then they get the mission to deal with insurrectionists, have the whole bit with the Rookie happen as is, then the gameplay ends with a funeral for the rookie. Have it ending with the offer from Jun to Buck with the camera not revealing Jun but his voice doing so until it pans up to make sure the player knows exactly who is speaking before it cuts to black after he says something along the lines of, "Hear me out this time." After Buck's instantaneous refusal as he's heard the offer before. Then part two opens with parts of their enhancement treatment while Buck's mindset of the fishing rod thing is heard while we see them going through their changes. then the game plays out with a bit of fluff to pad out the play time but ends with Mickey being turned in after what he did. it really could've been a hell of an emotional ride and feeling way more natural than whatever the fuck we got in 4 and 5 as a whole.
