so when my grandmother came here at the age of 5, the Texan school she went to allowed teachers to beat her when she spoke Spanish . they allowed her to be bullied by other children. she Learned English over time. but because she endured such terrible things for NOT being able to speak English, she wanted to make damn sure that never happened to her children. she wanted them to succeed in the country she moved to. so she never spoke spanish to them. and I never Learned Spanish as a child because of that. so don't say it's a shame , or that we have lost our culture. for the Mexican -Americans of Texas, we have built our own culture of who we are. so learn some damned history of immigration to the united states , pendejo.

I completely agree with you if there parents never bothered teaching their own children to speak the language then how can they be expected to be able to speak it? However there is still no excuse as an adult to not have a vested interest and trying to learn the language later on in life. I was born in Australia my mum is Uruguayan my dad is a first generation Australian of Chilean descent that makes me second generation Australian. I spoke Spanish as a first language until I went to school, there I learnt how to speak in English. I speak in Spanish fluently with no accent and can read and write in Spanish as well. It is good that your children will be bilingual and that you care about retaining our language. Side note my sister all though is able to understand most Spanish can hardly speak it and the little that she does know sounds horribly accented.

The issue is that in the US unless your ancestors are mostly from european extract, people are tagged or classified with a preposition to the nationality. eg. Latino, african american, chinese american, etc. which is not the norm in most latin american countries. At least in mine, you're Dominican, no matter where your parents are from, despite your origin or descent. which is a different issue. Just because these guys are from hispanic descent and may be influenced by its culture to an extent, that does not ( in my opinion) make them automatically hispanics. To start, they may not speak the language, or have low skills, so they're just regular Americans of latinamerican descent, that's it.

It's the fact that we only know those massacres because there were many people killed l, but I'm sure that there are more massacres than only those we see at TV or at news, and we don't see it just because there were less people killed or wounded. Sorry, FLAMA, but I don't agree. They are not Latin Americans (I don't like to say "latino, latina" in English); they have Latin American heritage, which is different. They are Americans by birth, and might have had a different percentage of Latin American cultural upbringing, depending on the case. The color of their skin and eyes, their names or surnames, I agree, don't make them Latin Americans or not. But they can't be considered Latin Americans when they've lost one of the most important traits of being so: the language. Just my thoughts.
@giomyv685

metallikita666 there IS a difference between race, ethnicity, and nationality, you know that right? They're race is unknown in the video, however, their ETHNICITY is Latino. What is ethnicity exactly? A group of people who share the same culture, food, language, etc. a Latino by definition, not by personal belief, is: a person who is from or can trace their origins to Latin America. That's it. Sure, it's sad they don't speak Spanish, but that doesn't make them less of a Latino than you or me. And that whole, born in America, your right, they are American, but that's their nationality, NOT their ethnicity. And saying a person not born in Latin America is not Latino is basically saying that George Lopez is not Latino, or Becky g, or even joana hausmann, all three of them were born in different countries, yet, huge crowds of people consider them Latino. Please, educate yourself about these topics before posting about them.

Reason I do not speak spanish is because I was adopted into an english speaking family with my aunt. I never learned spanish from her, but she does regret never teaching me. It's very sad to see how some of my family laugh and reject me for not being able to speak my native language. But we all moved here for a reason. I'm going to do what my mother and their mothers and their mothers couldn't do and explore the world and be successful. I have so many choices. And I sure as heck will take advantage of them :). Always remember your culture and where you came from though. But for my fellow non speakers. Don't feel down. Love who you are, it's fun to be different!:)

Ahora Vivo en Puerto Rico porque quiero practicar mi Espanol y aprender mas palabras tambien. My advice to my Latinos who weren't brought up with Spanish, try to learn now by listening to music in Spanish, watch TV in Spanish or watch your shows in English with Spanish subtitles. Write down the words and you can know how to form and conjugate words in sentences the way Spanish speakers do. It is sad to see that they do not speak Spanish ( for whatever reason) but it is a damn shame the reason why they do not speak Spanish: because they (or their parents) consider Spanish as lesser language. As for the people that say that Germans and Italian immigrants have lost also their languages when moving to USA I think is not the same. In which other country can you speak German or Italian officially? You can speak Spanish in more than 20 countries in the world. I live in a country where Spanish is not spoken and I have two kids but I will make sure that they will speak Spanish. It is very hard as they live in an environment where Spanish is alien (I am the only one in the family that speak to them in Spanish) but it is the best gift I can give them. Whether they will use in the future or not is another matter .

But the moment you don't speak a Language and don't share similarities with their cultural, common social ideologies, mentalities and their surrounding environment or world of entertainment you are not one of them. Many Latinos get upset or jealous either or of US born and raised people of Latin American culture and think "they are trying to be somebody else" or that "they are not proud of their culture" - No, wrong. They are American, think, talk and act like them. They might have similar racial similarities like some of you but that means nothing. A black american in no shape or form is an African, drop him off in Africa do you think he will have any similarities besides his skin colour? No! He will have more similarities with a white american who irionically fights against in America due to racism but in reality both are more similar to each other through cultural ties and not race.

For the people complaining: When people are raised in America, many times English is their first language. We don't attack Italian Americans who don't speak Italian. We don't attack black people who don't speak Swahili. So if this is a disgrace, Id happily let you choose what my nationality is since YOU'RE so uncomfortable.

first of all, Swahili is a eastern African language, while the majority of African Americans have roots in west Africa, second, that's a race. Latino isn't a race. It's a culture. Don't speak the language? Damn, guess you're not a Latino.

the only reason to call them "Latinos" was that they spoke a language derived from Latin. If they are not able to speak that language anymore, they automatically stop being "Latinos". Because his race is not Spanish obviously.

I would never understand why they don't speak Spanish. It seems to be a common thing in the US. They are so Americanized they don't want to learn their other language, their parents don't teach them or maybe they just don't have the chance to learn it. Anyways, knowing another language is such an useful tool nowadays. Especially Spanish. It helps you create a bond with your heritage. It helps you learn another language more easily. It makes you have a lot of job opportunities other people may not have. English won't be this useful forever. Keep that in mind.

I do not understand why People who are US citizens, anglophone monolinguals continue to be considered or consider themselves as « latino ». « Latin/Latino americans » is a cultural thing which refers to the latin languages spoken in latin American countries (the American countries whose languages are from south-Western European origin such as spanish, portuguese, french), by opposition with Anglo-america (US, Canada, Jamaica), whose language and culture is derived from northern european cultures (mainly English, which is a germanic language). What latin Americans have in common, and what distinguish them to anglo-Americans is not the « race » or a common genetic heritage (anglo Americans and latin Americans can actually be of any race »), but the fact that the native language they speak is a latin language and not a germanic one like English is. If one person do not speak one of the latin languages (italian, french, spanish, portuguese or Romanian); then this person is not « latin » anymore. Latin do not means to be of mixed race or having indigenous American backgrounds... it means having a latin culture, whose roots are in south-western Europe.

There's a misconception on the meaning of "Latino", latino means that the language, in this case Spanish, comes from Latin, it's the same case with brasil because that language it's also a Latin language, conclusion si no hablas el idioma con raíz del latín NO ERES LATINO, sino sudamericano, centroamericano o norteamericano porque tus ascendientes son de algún país perteneciente a este continente.

But I must say that I have found some hispanic people to be not very understanding. I am trying now because I am older and want to learn more about my roots. I saw a lot of people complaining and saying that they are not Latinos because they don't speak Spanish. I understand the root of the complaint but have you considered that at some point in your Latino family your descendants stopped speaking their Native languages to speak Spanish? Have you thought that Spanish was responsible for erasing a huge chunk of your origins? They are still speakers of those languages, but the majority of Latinos don't speak the languages that were born in Latin America, but the ones which were brought from Europe. Your family stopped speaking their language in their own country, and you don't seem to mind (the number of speakers of those languages is not surging), but you are outraged that people with Latino descendants can't speak Spanish. I don't get it. Go tell yourself that you are not, e.g. Mexican because for instance the Mexica didn't speak any Spanish, nor the rest of the nation's that were in today's Mexico.

Because my mother is german and my father is colombian, a white colombian, im colombian as well, and we are like 80% spanish 20% other things, i dont go around calling my self indian, because im not, they shouldnt go around calling them selves latinos, because they are sad gringos that thing they are something they are not, i grew in a city where a third of the people suffered from malnutrition, we spoke spanish at school, we grew surrounded by the latino culture, and the most important thing in a culture is the language, they dont speak it they are not.
@robertolaiz

Do you realise that in your family there were most probably people who stopped speaking their mother tongue, right? Because that's the whole point I'm trying to make. And on other hand, US is weird like that. You've got plenty ofmAsian people who don't speak the language. Go tell Irish people that they are not Irish if they don't speak Irish. They are two points: 1) why aren't you equally enraged by the loss of the languages native to America? 2) Generation change, languages disappear and some culture sort of survive while others disappear. These people in the video are Latino descendants, and the same way your descendants found it was better for them to speak Spanish, they think it's better for them to focus on English.
