Of course there is one way to stop feeling awkward and connect with your heritage, learn Spanish. You don't have to be fluent, or speak perfectly grammatically correct Castiza, but you do need to make the effort, and continue to make the effort. Don't quit. You will find that most Spanish speaking people will appreciate you for the effort. Yes some will poke fun, but not the majority.

This was nuts! It also reminds me of a time when I was in South Florida. A guy got upset with me for not speaking Spanish because he assumed I was Dominican. I then explained to him that I was just black, a descendant of slaves, and from the Midwest. Then he tells me that I shouldn't be ashamed to be Dominican and I shouldn't lie about my heritage. I walked away thinking how weird that conversation was and that I somehow "look Dominican". Definite new sub!

I had a very interesting conversation with a woman on this topic. She urged me not to forget my language like so many in my generation have because with that language comes a lot of cultural awareness and understanding. When that is gone and all you have is English, you lose that connection to your people. It saddens me when 2nd and 3rd generation Latino's forget where they come from and kind of turn back on part of their life.We should all be aware and sympathetic to the plight of our people no matter where we live or where we come from.

That is not my culture :/

The other two grandparents (maternal grandpa and paternal grandma) and all my great grandparents were born in European countries and moved to Mexico later. My point is I'm not the only one in this case and people forget mexico has had significant waves of immigrants in the past and some of those later generations come here being from Mexico but having no indigenous roots. The "culture" people say is (example) Mexican culture is only one tiny portion and it's been distorted to mean Mexican American culture. It's not the culture I grew up with

I love my culture, I love the Spanish language. I just feel bad that I was speech and hearing impaired when I was smaller. And my speech therapist forced my mom to teach me English first, because they assumed I would have a difficult time speaking English. After that, I was just very stubborn not wanting to speak Spanish with my parents...and I regret it deeply. Because now, it almost feels like I don't belong anywhere with anybody. People who expect other people of latin american/hispanic descent to speak spanish fluently just based on their ethnicity are just being plain ignorant and inconsiderate of other’ life circumstances. Ethnicity doesn’t determine what language you speak. For example, my roommate is ethnically Mexican but his family has been living in the States for several generations and as a result of that he doesn’t speak spanish. Is it his fault? No, because no one taught or spoke spanish to him as a child when were more capable of learning language. I myself am a second generation Mexican american and I speak Spanish fluently, more than many of my so-called spanish speaking friends. However, because I am english dominant I feel that when I speak to my future children I will mostly do so in English and not Spanish. Because of this, my children will probably not speak Spanish to the same degree that I do and their children to the same degree that they do.

***** I agree that his analogy isn’t coherent but I think what he meant to say is that race and/or ethnicity alone do not what language(s) someone speak. Like in the way we wouldn’t expect an african-american to speak an african language we shouldn’t expect a japanese-american to speak japanese or a person of latin american origin to speak spanish.
@yoquese979 жыл бұрын
***** since when latino is an ethnicity? Only for you americans, either you are white, black or mixed race latino like myself, I'm latino, specifically from Colombia, latinos (latinoamericanos) are the people that speak a romantic language, Spanish , French, Portuguese ... As a first language. Latinos aren't an ethnicity for god sake, we are just a group of countries that have something in common, we were Spanish/portuguese colonies and because of that we speak the same language, from mexico to Chile, the only country apart is Brazil but Portuguese and Spanish are almost identical, the range of similarity is 89%. And talking about this situation we don't get mad because a "Latino" doesn't speak Spanish, we just can't understand the thing of considerating yourself from a group when you don't really have something in common...., because the skin color is not what makes a Latino, what makes a Latino is his/here mother language and his/here country of origin.....
@yoquese979 жыл бұрын
***** I didn't make myself clear, I said the race thing because for example in the american airports they ask you to put your race and normally it says black, white, other races that I don't remember in this moment, or Latino, and Latino isn't a race, we are like a group, for example like the European union..

Currently, I am learning to be better at speaking Korean cuz I love that culture and it has been at least 10 years for me. Since I was 16 in highschool, I knew I was very different. I'll be 26 yrs old this December. I met a Korean girl in highschool and still now I love East Asian girls (Korean girls) primarily over Latinas, I would still date Latinas tho. I just went thru different experiences, they are not bad. Other Mexicans frowned upon me saying "You are NOT a true Mexican!!!". I am Mexican-American but I would rather call myself American. Cheers bro and just be you!

Charles Zee Interesting, I have a different point of it, im Mexican-American but never considered myself American, Im just waiting until im 21 so I can renounce my American Citzenship. ( Meanwhile working for my Mexican Citizenship, so I can be Mexican only) I HATE it when someone calls me American, But I do love the Danish culture, I would date a Dane, and have over a latino/hispanic. I will blast, Danish music or in spanish but never in English. I speak in Danish to my family , they understand the basics due to I was speaking it since I was 9. My closest friends are Danish. I HATE speaking English, ( but i have to, I only speak it in school or when its necessary ) I never liked the American culture. I love speaking Spanish and Danish. My kids are going to learn, Spanish and Danish over English. Im a Mexican American , love my Mexican side, consider myself Mexican, not American but would prefer the Danish. Love tacos, can't stand "American" food but would go for a couple of flæskesteg or smørrebrød any day. Love my banda music, can't stand Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, but would prefer Rasmus Seebach and Bjørnskov any day 😊🤞🏽

Even though Spanish was my first language, the majority of my childhood was majorly focused on learning English in school to the point where i would just converse with my mom in English and she would respond to me in Spanish. This was never really a problem until our family and relatives saw how little of Spanish I could speak correctly. They began teasing me and making fun of the way I spoke it, and this lead to the social disconnection I have with my parents, since their English-speaking skills were just as good as my Spanish-speaking skills. Thankfully, I've made a giant effort to advance my Spanish by taking classes in the summer as well as encouraging my mom to take some classes and helping her study English. If anyone is experiencing something similar, just know that it's never too late to learn!! xx

Learning Spanish can be difficult for the reason of cultural assimilation: assimilating into White American culture in order to avoid racism. Growing up, my Spanish-speaking parents both made an effort to make sure we didn't learn Spanish. My parents had grown up poor and Mexican in the 70's, and had faced racism while trying to transition to a White working world (my mom especially bc of her accented English). So, wanting the best for us, they sent us to White schools, hoping we could learn perfect English and assimilate into White culture. This is exactly what happened. My sister and I, both light-skinned, assimilated properly, and both forgot our Mexican-American identity. It wasn't until I went to college that I found the need to reconnect with my Mexican-American background. Fortunately, my college was 75% Latino and, spending so much time with other proud Spanish-speaking Latinos made me proud of my background and made me want to learn Spanish. Which I did! However, it wasn't until I started working at a restaurant with many Spanish-speaking coworkers and customers, that I was able to fall back on my high-school Spanish and finally learn. Basically, it can be a difficult course for a non-Spanish speaking Latino to even BEGIN to learn Spanish.

That's terrible that they thought that speaking fluent English required a person to be totally ignorant of other languages. I've met lots of people that speak perfect English, as well as a second language that they use with close family members. What matters to other people is that you can communicate with them clearly. As long as you can do it in one language they are not going to care, let alone be bothered by the fact that you are so well-educated that you have access to a second language. The ugly stigma against English speakers is that they are completely incapable of learning how to speak any other language. Denying a child the opportunity to grow up with a second language because it's assumed that they have to be monolingual if they're going to speak English well supports that idea, sad to say.

I was born and raised in America but I speak a bit of Spanish only because my mother's English is horrible. So there was a need to speak it. I've got relatives who are Latino, born in America but they don't have the need to speak Spanish because either their parents speak English or don't know Spanish themselves. If that need isn't present, then you're not going to speak Spanish. I'm pretty sure the same is true of any other language. I think it's arrogant on the part of Spanish speakers to look down on a Latino who doesn't speak Spanish. And even if you know how to speak Spanish, if you don't speak it at a certain level, these Spanish speaking Latinos will look down on you. But they get quiet when it's time to speak in English and they only know 4 words. Most people are going to learn the language that they need to learn to move around in their world. Ironically enough, whether it's Spanish or English, you're still fighting over some oppressor's language.

I don't know if you know the term bilingual, but there are a lot of Latinos that are born in america and speak Spanish as a regular latino, just with some accent, and also a lot of regular Latinos that speak English like normal Americans, of course with Hispanic accent, like myself, I'm born and raised Colombian but I study in USA...
@toneriggz9 жыл бұрын
I basically described myself as being bilingual, so I'd like to think that I know what the term means. But that's not my point. You're studying in the US, so there is a need for you to learn English because English is the dominant language in this country and if you're going to study here and work here, it's in your best interest to know the dominant language. There are Latinos born in America who don't really need to know Spanish because it's not that important to their everyday lives. And if you factor in their parents not knowing or not speaking Spanish to them, there's less of a chance that they'll grow up speaking Spanish. Knowing how to speak English is enough for them. In general, knowing as many languages as possible is a plus but for a lot of people, it's not a pressing need so they don't bother with it.
@Leocomander9 жыл бұрын
1. Most Latinos are perfectly bilingual (US Latinos) 2.You failed don't go around saying that Spanish is useless cause you can't speak it. 3. If I'd have to give up a language I would give up english. 4 .english is a ridicoulously easy language I learned it from Sponge bob and speak it with a very minimal accent. 5. If I can be perfectly bilingual and teach myself English why can't you do that with Spanish there is no excuse.
@toneriggz9 жыл бұрын
Leocomander 1. No, a lot of Latinos are not bilingual. That's the purpose of this video, to highlight those who don't speak the language. 2. I said that for a lot of people, particularly in America, they really don't need to speak Spanish. Speaking another language is always a plus, mind you, but it's not always necessary, especially in America. 3. Ok. 4. Ok. 5. I know enough Spanish to communicate with my close, Spanish speaking relatives. I don't really need nor desire to master that particular language.

Olivia I’m not ashamed (and no one can shame me for it) for not learning Spanish, but I am ashamed of being Mexican. I’ve realized there are differences in cultures that make it a society that people want to immigrate to. Many rich white people go to the resort towns of Mexico to party, but gangs are even making those dangerous now. I’m glad in prison that Whites and Hispanics have somewhat of an alliance against blacks, but if there would be no blacks, I realize it would be Whites against Hispanics. That is why I moved from Texas to Tennessee. More people are racist against blacks than Hispanics.

This is actually called the Generational Gap. As more generations of immigrants are born, their ability to learn Spanish diminishes. Example: Gloria and Exodia move to US to have kids and make a new life. They are the 1st generation of that family to live in the US. They speak Spanish, and they may or may not learn some English. Their kids are born and they are known as the 2nd generation. They speak both English and Spanish. However as time passes, because they generally only speak Spanish to 2 people, their parents, and because English is so dominant on TV, school, friends, etc, English greatly becomes the kids' dominant language. Spanish takes a backseat. Then when they go and visit their Spanish speaking only cousins, you can clearly see the difference in their vocabulary. Even 6 year old Spanish speaking only kids will great outperform even bilingual adults. I would know. Then the 2nd generation kids have kids of their own. Because the 2nd generation kids are so dominant and comfortable with English more so than Spanish, they will only speak English to the 3rd gen kids. Hence they learn little Spanish. Eventually by 4th gen, Spanish is all but gone.

That must be pretty annoying, I feel like people in the USA completely ignores the fact that bloodline isn’t the same as nationality, when they know someone’s heritage, it’s like your whole personality is based on the stereotypes from the country your family comes from. Being born in a Latin American country but raced in USA is not being Latino, nor having Latino parents, and the other way around, if a North American had a kid in South America who’s raised as Latino and then goes to the north, this person would have some cultural shocks bc they could be white, blonde, blue eyed and speak some English, but this person identifies with the Latin culture so it cannot be called “American”.

It has always bothered me that people think that someone has to speak a certain language because of their ethnicity. There are several reasons why someone who is Latin or Hispanic may not speak Spanish. Their parents may not speak it, so how would they learn it themselves. I would only assume that a Latin or Hispanic person would speak Spanish if their parents speak Spanish because then the person was brought up with that language. Otherwise, why would someone learn a language that they don't need to use? Just because you're a certain ethnicity doesn't mean that a specific language is wired in or that you need to know that language. I'm of Mexican decent, and my family speaks Spanish at home, so I know Spanish, but I have friends who are also of Mexican decent, but their families don't speak Spanish. I don't tell those friends that they SHOULD know Spanish, or that they aren't "as Mexican" as I am because they don't speak Spanish.

That is precisely what it means, you're wrong, anyone from a certain ethnicity must speak that language, otherwise, how can you even call yourself part of their ethnicity if you can't even communicate with them, the answer is simple, you are not Hispanic...

The culture... lmao I celebrate almost every holiday with my cousins who are, by your standards, full on Latinos/Latinas but I only know how to speak the basic amount to allow me to understand and say a few things. It wasn't a necessity for me since they all spoke English anyways and were kind enough to do so around me (never asked them to). I still have all the same experiences they all had with OUR families and I'm still considered a Latino because of it. What else was I suppose to go by if not Latino? Cacausian? That would be lying on multiple accounts. Maybe you should re-define what being Latino is to you because you are clearly mistaken and misunderstanding it. Language is really nothing but a verbal communications boundary to me.

@tomás the culture passes through the language, if you can not read Borges, Garcia Marquez, Vargas LLosa in Spanish then it is very difficult that you can get the subtle things that a native speaker can caught. Translations are doing a great job but the original has always a different meaning. I think many people has just to make peace with themselves, reconcile with their US citizenship and be cool with that, being an american from Latino origin.
@Cloverfr4 жыл бұрын
Precisely what makes someone latino is the language, that is where the name comes from. Non less, you may be descendent from parents from let's say, Venezuela, and it's totally okay to embrace the culture from that country, no one should take away that from you. Latino is not a "culture", every country has their own culture, is a tool, being the language that allow us all to communicate and share some aspects, but let me tell you, the culture within Latin countries can be strongly different, as an example Bolivia and Argentina, and this as neighbors countries. Different food, different speach, different expressions, different values, etc. Some countries can be very protective of this. When someone says Latino culture in this kind of context, it makes me think they think we all share the same culture, but we don't.

If you live in the States, there is absolutely no shame in not knowing Spanish. No one has to know Spanish, but they do have to know English. It's a HUGE misconception to think that if a person wasn't taught to speak Spanish, then that automatically means they're trying to be White. They're not trying to be anything, they're just naturally being themselves. I didn't speak Spanish until I became an adult. I never used it at home, even though my dad is from Jalisco and my parents spoke mostly Spanish with one another. My dad spoke English with us, not Spanish, and that's a GOOD thing. His English got better, which is what's really necessary in this country. And it's a HUGE LIE to say that if someone doesn't know Spanish, they'll never find a job. Oh really?? So, every single employed person in the United States knows Spanish? Most of them don't, so that lie fails. For those who don't speak Spanish, at least this person "gets you." You're not trying to be anything, you're just being you. If you WANT to learn another language, that's great! But you don't HAVE to. You have NOTHING to prove - not to other (Spanish speaking) Hispanics who have a corncob up their asses about you not speaking Spanish (it's no skin off their asses, so they're just being ridiculous), and certainly not to anyone else. You be you and be proud of you! :)

I also speak German and low German. As your dad did an effort to improve his English, you should had done the same with your Spanish. But you live in the US, the least interested country in understanding cultures out there, no surprise why a huge amount of Americans are so ignorant.

Umm this is a very touchy subject. Sometimes first generation parents don't want to teach their kids Spanish cause they are either afraid that they will get an accent and people will "bully" them or simply just didn't care. For me I grew up in a English speaking day care ever since i was at least 4 weeks old because my mother wanted to work. So i can admit that i lost my Spanish tongue (rolling your Rs). But my parents always spoke it at home so i do understand it. Also i lived in a rural southern town, a very small Hispanic population at the time when i was young. During my teen years i wanted to teach myself so i did. I don't shame other "Spanish speaking " ppl just because they don't for whatever reason. I mean there are some Asian who don't speak their native language but its a OK for them (im guessin) And if they don't want to speak then that's them... i mean its not hurting you, you're still breathing right? OK...

I understand, Growing up was insane for me. My mom is Mexican/ Arab and my Dad is Mexican/Chinese. They can't speak Arabic nor Chinese but know their indigenous language from Mexico; Mixteco and Mazahua. I grew up hearing my parents talking in their indigenous langauge to my grandparents. I don't speak, read or write because they were never passed down to me even though i heard them on the daily basis. I didn't know Spanish until I was 7. My mom told me that I rejected the language at a young age but now I am fluent (not perfect like from Mexico, but I can read, write and speak it) When I started learning Spanish, I didn't learn Mexican Spanish, I learned Colombian Spanish because my mom closest friends are Colombian and my closest friends are Colombian and Venezuelan. So when I speak Spanish, people hardly understand me for my slang . I grew up watching Colombian novelas instead of Mexican and watching Turkish novelas with my mom. But with all this going on instead of getting a "Mexican" accent , I have a Cuban accent. People downgrade me when I tell them that I'm Mexican but sound Cuban. Sorry but it isn't my fault. Meanwhile, I was exposed to the Italian language because my mom's sister married an Italian guy (uncle). They use to live with us until I was 11. my uncle would speak in Italian all the time when talking to his parents and grandparents. It got confusing, but at the same time at age 9 I feel in love with the Danish Culture. So i self taught myself Danish. Now i'm fluent, I respond to my parents in Danish, instead of Spanish. They picked it up (some of it) while I was learning it. I'm Mexican, Arab and Chinese. I speak 3 languages Spanish, English and Danish. (understand a bit of Swedish and Norwegian) Learning Italian. But don't know Chinese or Arabic nor the Indigenous language which I heard from a daily basis. You are correct when It isn't passed down.But I love all my cultures and wouldn't trade them for anything ♥

My father never taught me and my siblings Spanish because my mother was a Black American who didn't know it and because he used English to get around. When his parents died he didn't feel the need to use Spanish and thus never taught me. Luckily, I'm heavily interested in my Cuban culture that I'm learning more about it and made it my life's goal to learn the language, but most of the time not knowing the language isn't by choice so I wouldn't shamed Latinos for not knowing it.

Some of these comments are so ignorant. The point of the video is that people assume someone speaks Spanish just because of their name, and that is NOT okay. Only people with Hispanic names have to deal with that nonsense. My last name is Gonzalez, but I was born in Indiana and raised in Georgia. My grandparents came here from Mexico, but I didn't grown up around them, so I didn't learn Spanish. It would be pretty cool to know Spanish, but I'm no different than any other American who doesn't know the language of their ancestors. One of the commenter said that it's sad that 2nd and 3rd generation Hispanics forget their language. I didn't forget... I never learned. Why would I? I was born and raised in America. English is our language, so I don't think I owe anyone an apology for only speaking English. It is so annoying to have people constantly ask if I speak Spanish. I am a teacher, and one day, the ESOL teacher literally came to my door in the middle of my class with a little girl who speaks absolutely no English and said, "She's going to be in your class now. You speak Spanish, right?" That is not okay. I love my grandparents, and I love learning about my ancestors and their culture, but it isn't my culture.

+Caitlin Gonzalez I remember one time in high school, one of my teachers was on the phone with a student's parents because they got in trouble. She called me up to her desk, handed me the phone, and was like, "here, translate this," and I had to awkwardly say, "...I don't... speak Spanish." She rolled her eyes, sighed, and shouted to the entire class, "does anyone know Spanish?" Meanwhile, I was still standing in front of the class.

You are totally right. I work at a grocery store, and people come up to me and just assume I speak Spanish. When I tell them I don't speak it they either give me a frustrated look, or ask me why I don't, or they start talking to me in English. and it's damn good English too, why didn't they just speak to me in English to begin with.

What people fail to realize is that its not the persons fault its their parents and even then many of them feel forced to assimilate into "american" culture and didn't want their children learning English so they can be more accepted. You are Latino if you consider yourself Latino and thats what matters, its amazing to be bilingual and yes its sad some don't know the language but belittling their ethnicity isn't helping anyone

@@sierrarose8727 I mean those are just stereotypes at the end of the day, about Mexicans basically being Aztecs and Argentines basically being Italians. Spanish DNA is more common in Mexico than Nahua DNA because the Aztecs were only in one region of Mexico whereas the Spanish were in most of the country alongside many native groups (that mostly hated the Aztecs). Spanish dna is also more common in Argentina than Italian because the Italians migrated en masse alongside the Spanish but the Spanish had been there for far longer, so their DNA remains more common in a typical person.

The only problem I have with certain non Spanish speaking Latinos (Those from the Spanish speaking countries, and not Brazil for example) is that they will get annoyed when not included with other latinos that speak Spanish or they will use being Latino in their favor only when it will help them. Now, the reason I say some is that I do not judge at all the ones that were adopted into non speaking house holds, or where the parents refused to speak Spanish to them (for any reason including medical). The ones that I have more of a problem are the ones that decided to not learn the language, and by saying that I mean by avoiding to speak it all together. I was a no sabo kid. In 8th or 9th grade I decided I wanted to actually learn, so I decided to start speaking it around my siblings more. Yes, they would make fun of me for not saying some things right, but I learned from that. In High School I took French for all four years, but at home I would be online looking up Spanish grammar, I watched movies in Spanish, I listened to more music in Spanish and even followed hispanic KZbinrs. I was way more confident in speaking Spanish because I understood the grammar that much better and I actually decided to pay attention rather than take a Spanish class where most of the students wouldn't care and mostly get C's. I am fluent in Spanish now. So yes, it is possible to still speak Spanish if you are a no sabo kid, all you have to do is try, and if you don't try, then you should not use the excuse of not knowing later on and come up with excuses. Just say "I don't like speaking Spanish" it's that simple. For my friends that don't speak Spanish, I talk to them in English. This is also the reason I usually only speak English to Latinos when I first meet them. If I hear them speak Spanish, then I start speaking in both, even my white friends that know some Spanish, I will also talk to them in both. I also have nieces that are no sabo kids and one that doesn't speak Spanish at all. When they get upset because they don't understand the jokes or feel excluded from the Spanish conversations we have in the family, I no longer feel for them. Their parents spoke Spanish around them constantly when kids as did I. I even tried to get them to only speak Spanish to me. I stopped when they would no longer wanted to talk to me because I only spoke Spanish back and one of them even said that they did not want to speak Spanish because it as an ugly language. So like I said, unless there is a valid reason, I usually don't feel sorry for them.

I understand Spanish now, and can read a decent amount of it, but as a kid I didn't and I hated when people would go "you're Mexican and you don't speak Spanish you must be ashamed of your race" or I would get "ooh are you trying to be a white girl?" got on my damn nerves. also at school if there was just me and some Mexican who didn't speak English, teacher would ask me to translate, and I would tell them I didn't speak Spanish they'd get upset because I wasn't being co-operative, they would call one of my parents to tell them to which my parents would tell them that I didn't speak or read Spanish, after a while I guess teacher go the memo I didn't know Spanish so don't ask me to translate, I also got asked "how come you don't speak Spanish your dad's from Mexico, your isn't but she speaks Spanish" but to those who asked me this in Spanish I couldn't explain to them that my dad wanted to learn English as quickly and well as possible, so that at work he could talk with his bosses about which machines were working what parts were needed etc. also if he had to go to a job interview he could explain his work experience, show that he was bilingual and negotiate pay instead of always having to start at minimum wage. he might not of went pass the 7th grade in Mexico but he is smart enough to know the benefit of learning English FYI: this was back in the late 80s early 90s in small town USA like less the 3,000 people. also many Mexicans on Mexico will tell you that if your born In USA your not Mexican your American

You should not judge people who can't speak Spanish because many of the people who are from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, and other Spanish speaking countries who can speak Spanish; Spanish is not their native language either even though Spanish is the official language of these countries many of these people need to realize that in reality Spanish is not their native language either if they really wanted to speak their native languages they would be speaking languages that belong to the Uto-Aztecan, Oto-Manguean, Misumalpan, Arawakan, Mayan, Quechumaran Language families; Languges such as Nahautl, Yaqui, Zapotec, Miskito, Taino, Quechua, Aymara etc. Many People other people in these countries are of African decent so their native languages would be Niger-Congo languages such as Wolof, Mende, Yoruba, Akan, Fang, BaKongo, Mossi etc. Spanish is not a native language to North or South America; Spanish is a European language belonging to the Indo-European Language family.

+Bardo cinemático, that doesn't make sense for this conversation, though. We're talking about what language is "most Latino", and English isn't ever brought up as a mandatory language you have to speak to be Latino. It doesn't make sense to call out English here because there aren't any "speak English!" people in this debate. If we were talking about what it means to be American, then not mentioning that English is also a foreign language historically WOULD be hypocritical there.
@leolopezdigital8 жыл бұрын
Sorry, the video is in english, so your point isn't valid, and as matter of fact we are writting in english. One more hipocresy. The rethoric is pretty clear: Latinos in USA must speak english, Latinos out of USA must learn english so they can please americans (the dominant culture), spanish culture is wrong becouse they killed indians (but don't worry english isn't wrong, its fine) and then some latinos say "we are indians, we shouldn't speak spanish" (almost any of them speak an indian language) so at the end they just speak english. What a surprise, this is an excuse, as simple as that. But don't worry if they want to stay with the mainstream population is their problem, meanwhile I'll keep learning several languages, because I know, that's a winner's path. Good bye.

That girl was being so mean, as if the guy's inability to speak Spanish somehow makes him "not Latino". He still comes from a Mexican family, and most likely has both Mesoamerican and Iberian ancestry. My family speaks a few different languages: Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish, and English. Actually, none of my surviving relatives speak Spanish (my grandma died a few years ago), but I learned it myself in school and with the help of TV and music, and probably speak it better than most of my family :P However, we all understand Spanish, and have been watching Spanish-language TV since before I was born. As for Italian and Portuguese, I don't speak them because my parents always spoke to me in English, and usually speak to each other in English as well, but I understand both just fine most of the time. They have been speaking these languages much more since my grandfather moved into my house a few years ago, since his English is not very good. If someone told me I'm "not Italian" or "not Brazilian" because I don't speak Italian or Portuguese, I'd laugh at them. Other people have no right to try to erase anyone's identity.
